Tonight marks the second 2018 World Cup game for the Socceroos. The Australia Vs Denmark match, kicking off at 10 pm (AEST) on SBS, is crucial for the Aussie’s who despite a thrilling performance against France, failed to take home the points in a 2-1 loss.
Historically, Australia and Denmark don’t have a particularly interesting relationship. There is however, one hugely famous person who links the two countries, Australian-born, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark. Yes, her husband is the future king of Denmark, but surely the woman who grew up in Tasmania and spent 28 years of her life here, still calls Australia home!
Australia Vs Denmark: Who will Princess Mary be cheering for?
Mary met Prince Fred met 20 years ago during another great sporting event, the 2000 Sydney Olympics. Then she was Mary Donaldson. In 2001, Mary moved to Denmark and three years later, she solidified her position in Danish history when she married Prince Fred at Copenhagen Cathedral.
“From today, Mary is mine and I am hers,” Fred said at the altar. “I love her and I will protect her with all my love.”
Mary is indeed a crowned Princess of Denmark, and with that title comes an allegiance to the Scandinavian country, but surely her heart still bleeds green and gold!
The mum-of-four is yet to announce who she’ll be cheering for during the Australia Vs Denmark World Cup match, but she has previously spoken about which sporting team her loyalties lies with during global meets.
In 2016, during the Rio Olympics, Princess Mary declared that she’ll support the Aussie athletes on one condition.
“I’ll absolutely support Australians,” Princess Mary declared to The Today Show. “So long as they’re not competing against a Dane,” she added.
Reading between the lines, it seems our Mary will be wearing her red and whites tonight.
