Braving The Voice stage is nerve-racking enough. But in Nathan Brake’s blind audition, he had twice the reason to have the jitters.
The 26-year-old declared his love for his partner of six years, Mitchell, with a last-minute proposal.
After thanking his boyfriend for being “a constant support” over the past six years, Nathan dropped down on one knee and asked “Will you marry me?” to excited cheers from the coaches and audience.
“It was something I’d decided the night before,” Nathan tells TV WEEK. “I was freaking – I can’t even describe it.”
The couple became engaged three years ago, and planned to tie the knot overseas. But the pair put their wedding plans on hold when the marriage-equality survey was announced last year.
“With all that went on with the survey, I really wanted to start afresh,” Nathan explains of his decision to pop the question for a second time on TV.
Nathan says the public debate over marriage equality was an emotional time. But with the bill to legalise same-sex marriage passing, Nathan and Mitchell are now busy planning their nuptials.
The wedding will take place in Australia – much to the delight of the couple’s friends and family.
Nathan admits the pair still have a lot of planning to do. But they’ve locked in their entertainment for the big day, with coach Kelly Rowland offering to perform.
“That would be a dream come true,” Nathan laughs. “Obviously, I’m not going to hold her to it, because she’s a very busy woman!”
After the episode aired, Nathan took to Instagram to thank viewers for their support.
“WOW! I don’t even know where to start! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for the amazing love and support being sent my way right now,” he captioned his post. “Thank for you for sharing that moment with me. I am so excited for this next chapter of life and cannot wait to get started on this amazing journey with the incredible Delta Goodrem.
“Mitchell and I are filled with so much joy right now, our hearts are so full! I hope you enjoyed watching as much as I enjoyed performing! LETS GO TEAM!!”
