It’s the fairytale ending fans of The Bachelor Australia were hoping for. Within the stunning plains of South Africa, Bachelor Matt Agnew declared his love for Chelsie McLeod.
“I went in to this experience very optimistic and this is exactly where I wanted to end up. I wanted a love that is out of this world and I’m over the moon that I’ve found it,” Matt confessed, after telling runner-up Abbie Chatfield that his heart belonged to someone else. “I can not wait to tell [Chelsie].”
In the lead-up to the magical moment, the 28-year-old chemical engineer was freaking out, concerned she hadn’t spent enough time showing Matt how she “really” felt about him.
After impressing Matt’s friends Kate and Jason during their meeting, Chelsie was determined to finally let her guard down and tell Matt how she felt.
“You are more than I could ever have dreamed of in a human being,” Chelsie told Matt. “I want a life with you, I want to go through the ups and downs. You make me so happy and I want to make you so happy as well. I can see a future with you and I don’t want to picture one without you. I’m in love with you.
Despite having declared she loved him on their final date, Chelsie was scared she was about to be dumped.
And in a shock twist, Network 10 made it seem as though Chelsie may have lost, showing footage of her arriving at the scene first. But, all was not as it seemed.
“This is such a big moment for me I can’t believe I’m here now,” she told host Osher Günsberg upon arriving at the final ceremony to meet Matt. “The negative outcome scares me a lot. I think I’m worried I showed Matt who I was too late in the process.”
However, all that fear faded when the astrophysicist started his speech.
“I’ve never believed in such thing as the perfect woman until I met you,” Matt said. “You encapsulate everything I’m looking for. My biggest fear is opening up to that special someone and having my heart broken into a thousand pieces.
“My heart is fluttering and even though it could get broken in to a thousand pieces it’s time to take the plunge and tell you how I feel. Chelsie, I love you.”
Visibly shocked, the blonde beauty gasped and asked, “What?”
“Oh my God. I thought you were dumping me,” she whispered.
“Actually quite the opposite,” he replied, laughing.
“I love how you giggle when you’re nervous,” Matt continued to tell a teary Chelsie.
“I love that you go full nerd as soon as there’s some maths involved, and above all I love how to make me feel. You make me want to believe in fairytales because when I’m with you I feel like I’m in one.”
Chelsie told Matt she had been “crying all day” because she was certain she was about to lose him.
“I thought you were going to break my heart,” she said. “And then you didn’t break it. You made it whole again.”
The happy couple reveal to TV WEEK that they are “excited” to move forward from the show together, and take their relationship out it into the world. Even if that just means stopping by the local supermarket in Melbourne.
“I think doing normal things is great and something we’re both looking forward to,” Matt tells TV WEEK. “But what we’re most excited about is adventures.
“It’s something we’ve talked about a lot and that can be something extravagant like going travelling to an exotic location that we haven’t been before and exploring or it could be going for a hike on a Saturday morning…”
“Even a trip to Coles I’d call an adventure, so it could even be that,” Chelsie adds. “Let’s be real.”
Matt jokes: “Yeah I think depending on what we decide to go to Coles to buy, how you cook could be an adventure for me if I have to eat it.”
Though they’ve had to keep their relationship under the radar, many of their friends and family have already met to give the final tick of approval.
“My family and friends have nothing but positive things to say about Matt,” Chelsie reveals. “Mum’s in love with him already as it is. My family and my friends have literally never said anything bad, it’s all been completely positive so he has nothing to worry about!”
“Good, I’m pleased to hear that!” Matt says. “I think my folks and my family and my friends will be thrilled. They’ve tried to be obviously with the process, as diplomatic as possible about their feelings towards the people in the show, but it was very obvious they were hoping that Chelsie was the one at the end and I’m sure they’ll be very happy to get to meet and see us happy together.”
Unlike some Bachelors before him, Matt didn’t pop the question. However, he did give Chelsie a beautiful ring by Larsen Jewellery, describing it as an item to stand as a “memory” experience.
Marriage isn’t on the cards for the madly-in-love duo yet, but it’s certainly something they see in the future.
In fact, the pair have even discussed having kids one day.
“Matt says he wants three kids and I want two,” Chelsie previously told TV WEEK. “It’s definitely something I want to do in the near future, but I want to achieve a few more things in my career first.
Of course, Chelsie thinks her astrophysicist boyfriend would be a “really good dad”.
“He says he wants to be a very hands-on dad and even had the idea of being a stay-at-home dad,” she adds.
Congratulations to the happy couple!
