There’s no doubt MasterChef Australia’s Derek Lau is an eligible guy. His muscled arms have been attracting more attention on social media than his delicious dumplings. But don’t expect to see him making the leap from MasterChef kitchen to The Bachelor Australia mansion.
“I don’t think it’s really for me,” he tells TV WEEK with a laugh. “Too much drama!”
The Perth financial analyst, 26, admits he never expected to be seen as a “heart-throb” when he signed on for the cooking show.
“I didn’t think I met the height requirement!” Derek, who’s 167cm tall, jokes. “The cameras make me look taller somehow. It’s quite funny.”
Although he does go to the gym five or six times a week, he insists there’s a reason.
“It’s my way of justifying the amount of food I eat!” he says.
Derek says he’s had “quite a few girls – and guys” message him since he’s been on air.
“It’s really sweet to have people think of you like that,” he says. “It’s quite cool.”
Currently single, Derek hasn’t had a serious girlfriend since his university days. He says he’s attracted to girls who are “kind, caring and independent”, but says he doesn’t “really go out there looking”.
Derek may be impressing the MasterChef judges, but he declares he didn’t go on the show to win.
“I signed up to push myself,” he explains.
MasterChef Australia airs Monday to Thursday, and Sunday, 7.30pm, on Network 10.
