Katie and Alex’s House Rules dream came to crashing halt on Sunday night when the judges blasted the pair for their entry, hallway and lounge room at Tim’s family home renovation in Melbourne.
With two of their rooms being small (entry, hallway) the pair didn’t have much to work with, and their design was criticised by the judges.
Wendy Moore branded the couple “lazy”, while Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen scored them a dismal three out of 10. The outspoken judge went on to question their place in the competition.
Katie, 29, is still reeling from the forthright feedback.
“Wendy’s words probably hurt the most,” she tells TV WEEK. “It couldn’t be further from the truth. We work so hard and we know we did all we could.”
The full-time mum thinks Laurence’s score wasn’t fair, either, especially given their success so far on the show.
“It’s really hard to understand how Laurence thinks we don’t deserve a place in the competition, because we’ve been doing so well,” she says. “He obviously had his reasons, but it really knocked us for six.”
Katie says she lost all confidence because of the harsh comments.
“It really affected the next renovation for us,” she admits.
The harsh critiques left them with the lowest score, with just 14 out of 30.
Taking to Instagram, the pair revealed they were heartbroken to watch the judgement back on TV.
“Your support is helping more than you know,” they wrote. “What a moment… We are just heaaaartbroken by Wendy and Lawrence’s comments this week. “Lazy” and “undeserving of a place in this competition” are the words still ringing in our ears.
“We know now that we definitely could have done better, but we will never be able to agree that we didn’t work as HARD and considerately as we possibly could. We will use this experience the best way we can to better ourselves next week, but for now, we can only hope that Tim and Mat love their home that every team has poured their souls into.”
House Rules airs Monday to Wednesday, 7.30pm, and Sunday, 7pm, Channel Seven.
