In December 2017, Alex Nation debuted a ring on her finger after a “really, really special whirlwind romance” with her AFL teammate Maegan Luxa.
But within months, the Bachelor In Paradise star hit the brakes, telling TV WEEK she’d “jumped the gun and owed it to myself to explore my sexuality and figure out who I am”.
“It was a huge part of my life because I was in a same-sex relationship, and I’ve never been with a woman before,” she admits.
“What I thought I wanted in a partner was turned on its head when I met her,” Alex continues. “She just came into my life and I was like, ‘Wow, who is this woman and why do I feel like this?’
“When she proposed, I said yes with my whole heart. But as time went on, I thought this was going way too fast. We didn’t break up; we decided we wouldn’t be engaged, so I stopped wearing my ring.
“She was really amazing. She was so supportive and understanding of that, because she’d been with women for all her romantic life.”
Alex says she and Maegan are still friends, but it’s likely her ex will support her from afar rather than watch the show.
“She always checks in,” she says. “And she was a really special friend to Elijah [her son] as well. They had a really special connection. Elijah adored her.”
Bachelor In Paradise Australia premieres Tuesday, 7:30pm, on Network 10.
