George Clooney was renowned for his reluctance to ever marry or have children, but his dad has known for years that he was destined for fatherhood.
“I’ve been telling George since he was 30 that I thought he would be a great parent,” Nick Clooney told People.
Although George would often insist children just weren’t in his future, Nicks says: “I would listen to him patiently and then finally step in and say, ‘George, some astounding woman is going to knock your socks off, end of story.’ And it’s exactly what happened.”
Not to say that having children – two at once, for that matter – is any small feat.
“This change is more profound than any change in his life,” says Nick, “and he is excited.”
By all accounts, the pair have taken to parenting like ducks to water.
“Oh my God, they were so beautiful, so happy, so contented,” says Amal’s mother Baria Alamuddin, who was at Ella and Alexander’s birth on June 6th.
“You just look at them and you feel like they’ve been a mother and father for their whole lives,” she adds.
Nick agreed, saying: “George will be an absolutely wonderful father.
“He will be hands-on entirely and he will do it with humor and with joy.”
“Amal will be – and already is – a magnificent mother. I’m constantly amazed by her. She is an incredible woman.”
But in terms of whom the twins resemble more, Nick was at a loss.
“I’m supposed to be a reporter, therefore observant, but I really don’t know how to describe one beautiful baby from another beautiful baby,” Nick explained. “These are two beautiful babies.
“They are perfect.”
“[My wife] Nina swears they have George’s nose,” he added. “I don’t know what that means.”
Nick also recently revealed George and Amal’s “fates were sealed” after their first meeting – which George’s parents were there for.
Although the original canon involves George meeting Amal at a dinner party through mutual friends, the fact his parents chaperoned is a new twist.
“Nina and I were actually the ones who answered the door when Amal came in,” Nick told People. “She introduced herself to us and we talked. She was obviously very charming, gorgeous and so clearly accomplished, but by the time we had supper that night, it was clear there was a kindness to her and an inclusiveness.”
“I started looking over at Nina and saying, ‘Look ouuuut, this could be trouble for this young man!'”
Ahh yes, the young man of a mere 52-years-old.
“I really think by the time that first [meeting] was over, his and her fates were sealed, both of them,” Nick said. “She was so remarkable and he was so remarkable around her.”
Obviously Nick was right, with the pair married just a year later.
