Finally a bit of good news for Bert Newton and his family. The TV legend and his wife Patti are to become grandparents for the fifth time, with the couple’s 38-year-old daughter Lauren expecting her fifth child at the end of the year.
Patti took to Instagram on Sunday to announce the happy family news, which was also first reported in the Herald Sun.
“Lauren and Matt are expecting their 5th child in December. We are all just so excited especially the kids. How lucky are we, can’t wait,” Patti wrote.
Lauren Newton, is Bert and Patti’s youngest child. She and her partner Matt Welsh, a former world champion swimmer are parents to four children, two boys and two girls.
Lauren also took to Instagram to share her joy,”Can’t believe this gorgeous 4 will become 5 at the end of the year! It will be busy but wonderful. I am lucky to have some great little helpers!!” she wrote alongside a sweet photograph of her children.
The happy family news comes after Bert, a stalwart of Australian television, faced intense criticism after his appearance at the 60th annual TV WEEK Logie Awards.
On stage while presenting the Graham Kennedy Award for most popular new talent, Bert used a gay slur to refer to himself and then commented that his late friend Graham, who kept his sexuality a closely guarded secret, enjoyed “mentoring” young talent behind closed doors. The comments were not well received and immediately sparked backlash on social media.

An insider told Woman’s Day that Bert was ‘broken’ after his Logies appearance.
“Bert didn’t mean to give offence and he’s heartbroken that after being considered a living legend, this year’s misstep has cost him everything,” the insider says.
“He was broken by the end of the night.”
Bert’s on-stage gaffe at the 2018 Logies award sparked criticism online.
Bert has since appologised for casing any offense during his Logies speech.
“If I did offend somebody, or anybody, or a lot of people, I apologise — it was never intended at any stage of the game to offend,” the TV legend told the Sunday Herald Sun.
