The 13 strangest Royal Family superstitions you’ve probably never heard of

Beware the bread.

When it comes to royal tradition, the British monarchy is steeped in centuries of customs, rules – and yes, superstitions.

From cursed jewels to phantom footsteps and even the safest way to make sandwiches, certain beliefs have been strongly held and passed on from generation to generation. But is there any truth behind them?

We turned to an expert on the matter – Caterina Ligato from The Australian Ghost Whisperer podcast – to find out.

She says that although some of these superstitions “may appear nonsense to us”, they’re definitely real to the royals.

Royal jewels are said to possess “mystical powers”. (Image: Getty)

When talking about the royal jewels, for instance, Caterina says, “I hear they do have mystical powers because they’ve been passed through generations and generations.

“So they’ve accumulated all this energy from all the family members that have owned them, and they’ve been used in ceremonies.

“We know crystals, diamonds… they contain energy. So absolutely, they would hold mystical energies. I think that’s why they’re so protected and why they’re kept enclosed and only worn on special occasions.”

Basically, she says, all this superstition boils down to ceremony. “They keep their superstitions sacred because it’s a part of who they are that makes them different to everybody else,” Caterina explains.

“Everything about them is ceremony. Ceremony is all about particular events because there’s a special time and meaning for every ceremony they do.”

Without further ado, here are 13 of the strangest superstitions of one of the world’s most famous families.

13 ROYAL FAMILY SUPERSTITIONS

Eating square sandwiches risks having the King overthrown

In Secrets of the Royal Kitchen, former royal chef Graham Newbould claimed that the royals never have square-shaped sandwiches.

“Tradition has it that anyone presenting them with pointed-edged food is trying to overthrow the throne of England,” he said.

For this reason, he went on to say that he never served the late Queen Elizabeth a square sandwich. Instead, she enjoyed small “jam penny” sandwiches as part of her afternoon tea.

The Tower of London ravens

One of the most famous superstitions connected to the Royal family is the belief that if the ravens ever leave the Tower of London, both the Crown and the kingdom will fall.

To avoid this dreadful fate, at least six ravens are kept at the Tower at all times. Their wings are even clipped to ensure they don’t fly away.

03

The ghosts of Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle, the favoured royal residence of Queen Elizabeth II, is said to be haunted by several past monarchs.

The spirits of King Henry VIII, Queen Elizabeth I and King George III are all rumoured to wander the halls.

Some members of the royal family have reportedly felt their presence or seen ghostly figures, supporting the castle’s long-standing (and super eerie) lore.

04

The Kohinoor diamond curse

Part of the British Crown Jewels, the famous Kohinoor diamond is believed to carry a curse, making it one of the most prized – and feared – jewels in their collection.

The superstition goes that any man who wears the diamond will face misfortune, so it has only ever been worn by women in the royal family.

Royal bees must be alerted of a monarch’s death

In a tradition that dates back centuries, royal beekeepers must inform the bees of a monarch’s death. If the bees aren’t told, it’s believed they will leave the hive or die themselves.

When the Queen died, Palace beekeeper, John Chapple, told Mail Online that he travelled to Clarence House and Buckingham Palace to tell the seven bee hives.

As for how the long-held practice is carried out, he said: “You knock on each hive and say, ‘The mistress is dead, but don’t you go. Your master will be a good master to you.”

06

The royal touch

For centuries, it was believed that monarchs could heal the sick with their magic touch.

The practice, known as the “royal touch”, was a ceremony that, reportedly, saw the monarch restore health to the sick simply by touching them.

07

Coronation day mishaps curse

Coronation days mishaps are steeped in superstition, with many believing that any accident or mistake during the coronation ceremony is a bad omen, potentially signalling a troubled or ill-fated reign.

Discussing the Queen’s coronation at age 27, Anthony Geffen, who had interviewed the queen for a documentary about her coronation, told The Times 2Arts how fortunate Elizabeth was that hers went well, given her young age and inexperience.

“She was just 27 when she was crowned and there is a strong tradition in the history of the English coronation that anything goes wrong it is seen as an ill omen,” he explained.

08

White heather for good luck

White heather has long been considered a good luck charm, which has made it a ‘must’ for the royal family during public events or significant occasions.

It’s seen as a protector against bad fortune, with many royals spotted clutching a sprig for good measure.

Royal gems possess “mystical powers”

“Royal jewellery has shone with gemstones that possess ‘mystical powers’ since the Middle Ages,” jeweller Steven Baker told the Express.

His company supplied Princess Diana’s sapphire engagement ring, which was passed down to Prince Harry who then gave it to Prince William and now belongs to Princess Catherine.

“Mainly sapphires are renowned for strengthening fidelity and commitment as well as bringing stability and prosperity to the financial situation,” Steven explained, adding that was why Queen Victoria, a very superstitious royal, wore a giant sapphire on the day of her wedding.

10

The “Balmoral Test”

While not exactly a supernatural superstition, the “Balmoral Test” is a long-held belief among royals.

Basically, if a newcomer doesn’t enjoy their time at Balmoral Castle, they’re considered unsuitable to join the family.

Probably unrelated but it’s said that while Prince Harry grew up going to Balmoral, it’s believed that Meghan Markle has never visited the royal family’s Scottish castle.

11

The ghost of Queen Victoria at Balmoral

Speaking of Balmoral, it’s said to be haunted by the spirit of Queen Victoria.

Some royals believe that her ghost still watches over the estate, keeping an eye on her descendants.

12

The opal superstition

In the late 19th century, Queen Alexandra was particularly superstitious about opals. She believed that wearing the gemstone brought bad luck and illness, leading to the royal family avoiding opals for many years.

13

Phantom footsteps at St. James’s Palace

An unsettling superstition claims that hearing phantom footsteps at St. James’s Palace is a sign of death in the royal family.

The palace’s haunted reputation has only grown over the centuries, leaving many to wonder if the footsteps are actually superstition – or something more.

The hilarious way Ed Kavalee convinced his now wife Tiffiny Hall to go on their first date

Now, this is a great meet-cute story!
Loading the player...

Australian TV sweethearts Ed Kavalee and Tiffiny Hall are the parents of two lovely children, Arnold and Vada. But it is hard to believe the parents of two met in the most delightful, yet unlikely set of circumstances.

Prior to her work as a professional trainer on The Biggest Loser, Tiff created her own fitness program, TIFFXO and was one of the performers on Channel Seven’s Gladiators.

(Credit: Instagram)

Despite never having met in person, Ed was so enamored by Tiff that he orchestrated a way for them to meet.

“They were filming Gladiators at the showgrounds and I was working at Nova,” Ed told news.com.au in 2018. “I said, ‘Can I go and interview the Angel Gladiator because she’s so hot?’ So we actually met when I interviewed her when she was a Gladiator, but she didn’t remember meeting me.”

Ed continued to find more opportunities, even asking her to come in for an interview “like three times in a row” while doing fill-in radio.

(Credit: Instagram)

“The third time the publicist at Channel Seven goes to me, ‘It’s getting a bit ridiculous that you keep asking Tiffiny in.’ And Tiff turned to me and said, ‘Yeah, it is ridiculous. When are you just going to ask me out?’ And that’s how we got together,” Ed confessed.

However, the interaction was a little less memorable for Tiff who told 9Honey in 2019 it wasn’t until later when she found Ed “charming and very funny.”

A time came where Ed intended to propose during a romantic dinner but became too nervous after fans kept approaching the couple. But this obstacle worked in their favour, as they returned home, put on their pyjamas when the comedian dropped down to one know.

“Both of us were in tears,” Tiff said.

Afterwards the couple became engrossed by their growing careers when the talks of expanding the family began. Soon, they received the happy news that Tiff was pregnant with their first born, Arnold Martin Kavalee born in September 2017.

Unfortunately, it wasn’t an easy pregnancy for Tiff who was bedridden for nine months, suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum.

“I was sick the whole time right up until my last contraction and all I wanted was sausage rolls,” she told news.com.au. “My pregnancy didn’t go to plan, but it delivered me a healthy baby. I just embraced it and was proud of what my body achieved.”

A few years later the smitten duo welcomed their second baby together in May 2022, sharing the news to Instagram with a first glimpse at the precious baby.

“Arnold’s little sister has arrived. Welcome Vada Kavalee,” Tiffany wrote.

Royal watchers are conflicted over Prince William’s beard

Who knew facial hair could be so divisive?

While the Wales family were on their annual summer break at their Norfolk holiday home, Prince William and Princess Catherine released a video message where William was sporting some rarely-seen facial hair.

Royal watchers chalked it up to the couple being relaxed while on holiday, but it seems the beard is here to stay as the Prince of Wales has since rocked his new look to multiple official events.

Fans have quickly flocked to social media to make their opinions on William’s beard known – and not everyone is happy about it.

Who knew that something as simple as facial hair could spark such a fierce debate?

Some royal watchers have claimed the prince looks “dashing” and “handsome”, while others have made their dislike known.

Some interesting conspiracy theories have even been stirred up, with some fans claiming William is rocking the beard in an attempt to look more like his brother Harry.

An even more far-fetched theory is that the 42-year-old is channelling his inner David Beckham, whom his father, King Charles, notoriously shares a close relationship with!

While attending the Sovereign’s Parade at the Royal Air Force College in Cranwell on 12 September, Prince William was once again sporting his new facial hair.

The heir to the British throne was at the event to watch the RAF cadets graduate, but many royal watchers were more focused on his beard.

“Here for the beard comments!! 😝 🔥,” someone wrote, while another commented, “With all due respect Your Highness the prince of Wales you are just taking our breath away with this beard 😍😍😍 pls keep it🥰🥰🥰.”

Many other fans echoed these sentiments with people writing, “He looks even more handsome with a beard! ✨,” and, “William needs to keep the beard! Very dashing!”

The majority of comments saw people expressing their love of the beard, but not everyone was happy to see the Prince of Wales sporting facial hair at a royal engagement.

“Please shave,” someone begged, while another added, “Get a shave. You’re a King in waiting.”

Some people even tried to hit home, commenting, “Your brother grows a better beard ✨🎤,” and, “William shave it off. Makes you look old!”

We’ll have to wait and see whether the Prince decides to keep the facial hair or retire it from public life!

While the first two seasons of the drama about the Royal Flying Doctor Service were shot in Broken Hill, that’s not possible this time around due to a major airport upgrade in the town.

Season three of RFDS is being filmed in South Australia, in locations such as Port Augusta, Quorn, and Adelaide.

Co-creator, writer and executive producer Ian Meadows said of the third season: “This series strives to showcase the beauty of regional Australia and the incredible work that the RFDS does to reach and support our most remote communities.

“We are pleased to have found a new home in South Australia for Season 3, utilising the Port Augusta RFDS Base and beautiful regional surrounds including Quorn, as well as locations across Adelaide.

“There’s lots of beautiful landscapes there, and different stories and different places and actors.”

In case you haven’t noticed, Deadloch has fast become a zeitgeisty title in the world of streaming, with fans and critics alike singing its praises.

To prove it, Prime Video’s critically acclaimed series has officially reached the Certified Fresh status on Rotten Tomatoes, with a 100 per cent score from critic reviews and an 89 per cent audience score.

A uniquely Australian show – in culture, humour and slang – it’s no wonder that the crime-comedy has found a growing audience of passionate fans globally (and locally, of course). And, the series has officially been renewed for another season.

At the 2024 AACTA Awards on The Gold Coast last year, we spoke with the creators Kate McCartney and Kate McLennan to find out about season two.

“I mean, it’s pretty obvious from the way season one ended that we’re gonna head up north,” McClennan told TV WEEK when discussing possible storylines for another season.

“We’re just really happy to be basking in the success of season one,” added McCartney.

So, if you’d like to see what all the hype is about then read on for everything you need to know about Deadloch, including where to watch it in Australia.

What is Deadloch about?

The series takes place in a Tasmanian town called Deadloch; a once sleepy seaside hamlet that is left reeling when a local man turns up dead on the beach.

Two female detectives are thrown together to solve the case: Fastidious local senior sergeant Dulcie Collins (Kate Box) and a rough-as-guts blow-in from Darwin, senior investigator Eddie Redcliffe (Madeleine Sami) along with their overeager junior constable Abby (Nina Oyama).

As the town prepares to launch the annual arts, food, and culture event – Winter Feastival – the trio have to put their differences aside and work together to find the killer.

“Chock full of witty sarcasm, zany characters, and a cast that looks like they’re having a blast Down Under!” one rave reviewer described the show.

“Could not love this series more!! Phenomenal from start to finish. Makes my entire Prime subscription worth it!” added another.

Will there be a second season of Deadloch?

Season two was officially confirmed in July 2024 by Prime Video, with production on the six-part second season currently taking place in the Northern Territory.

Fans can expect to see the return of Kate Box and Madeleine Sami as Dulcie and Eddie, as the detective duo head up to Darwin to investigate the death of Eddie’s former policing partner, Bushy.

But when the bodies of two Top End icons are discovered in a remote town, they are flung into a new sweatier, stickier investigation.

Paige addresses the ‘false’ narrative shortly after exiting The Block 2024

"I really did try my hardest to be ok."
Loading the player...

For five weeks, viewers watched the controversial couple from WA, Paige and Jesse struggle on The Block.

Their turbulent journey was the focus in the few weeks before the couple’s decision to exit the renovation series – a move that came as no surprise to Blockheads.

Paige has gone to TikTok to share her experience. (Credit: TikTok) (Credit: TikTok)

Shortly after their departure, Paige Beechley took to TikTok to “lift the veil” on her experience, claiming their relationship was ‘incorrectly’ portrayed on TV.

“I think a lot of people have seen through this narrative that just doesn’t make sense. Week Four rolls around, Jesse and I have quite a big argument on the Friday night. I was pretty much done, I did not want to be there, I wasn’t feeling like myself,” she said.

“The time wasn’t even correct on the TV and we never fought at night time we fought during the day… they had a narrative because they start editing whilst we’re filming. So, they had a narrative ready to go and my mental health didn’t fit in that box.

“So, whilst you see this one narrative on TV, we were living this complete other narrative.”

Paige and Jesse exited the series in Week Five. (Credit: Nine)

In her three-part TikTok video, Paige admitted to “dealing with very real mental health issues” at the time.

“I really tried to push my mental health to the side, but anything was setting me off. I was nervous, anxious, paranoid… but I really did try my hardest to be ok,” she said after revealing it was a triggering experience to wake up to “crew coming into our rooms in the morning to film” with “no warning.”

“By the time the morning visits stopped it was just sadly a little too late for me. I was off the deep end,” she said.

Two weeks after this, Jesse and Paige decided to leave. She stood up for herself and allegedly questioned why no one had talked to her about her mental health. To which the producers reportedly sent an email.

Paige said she’ll still watch The Block in support of her friends. (Credit: TikTok)

Following their departure, The Block host Scotty Cam commented on the situation, explaining it “was a duty of care moment.”

“We didn’t force them out,” he said in a video published on 9Now. “We’ve always said we’re not doing anything important here, we’re just renovating. Health, well-being, happiness, always comes first on The Block. We always make sure contestants’ wellbeing is number one.”

“We got professional help and had extensive chats… we followed it up with professional care in their home state for as long as they needed it.,” he concluded.

Despite her experience, Paige remains close to the contestants as she revealed she will “watch [The Block] to support our wonderful castmates, especially Maddy and Charlotte who we are really close to.”

Don’t let your period stop you from making the most of summer with period-proof swimwear

Hit the waves with confidence.

Summer is in full swing and we are just itching to get down to the beach or spread out by the pool and lap up the warm weather and rays (slathered in sunscreen of course).

As it usually goes, with the transition to warmer weather and days spent in swimmers comes the anxiety of what to do when our period comes.

Swimming in pads is near impossible and of course, tampons are an option. However, the fear of leaking, not to mention the serious environmental effects of disposable period products is enough for anyone to look elsewhere for solutions.

In Australia, 20 billion sanitary products end up in our landfills and oceans every year. Enter the period panty and following that – period swimwear!

Period swimwear is the latest development in sustainable menstrual products and offers an eco-friendly alternative to the classics and we are so excited to see more brands taking on the challenge of embracing the trend.

The best period swimwear to buy in Australia

If you are looking to relieve yourself of the anxiety of leaking while you enjoy your summer, then look no further as we have rounded up some of the best brands out there at the moment that have taken the dive into period swimwear so you can focus on the waves.

Do period swimsuits really work?

Period swimwear is much like your usual favourite bikini or one-piece.

While every brand is different and uses its own techniques and tech to nail leak-proof swimwear, the basic gist is that there is an extra absorbent lining to catch blood and prevent leaks along with extra quick-drying material.

Period swimwear can be worn alone for light to moderate periods or can help add an extra layer of protection while using menstrual cups or tampons. They’re also a great option for anyone who wants extra protection from light incontinence.

Just make sure to pick the right size and follow the brand’s instructions for changing and cleaning, and you’re good to go. They’re a game-changer for many folks who menstruate during water activities!
