Depressed Oprah’s two-day binge

Friends fear for Oprah Winfrey’s health after the stressed-out star embarked on a 48-hour eating binge, feasting on high-fat foods such as hot dogs, fried chicken, pizza, and chocolate cake.

The marathon session took place in Macon, Georgia, where she was taping her recent Oprah’s Favourite Things episode. Residents were stunned not only by her appetite, but also by her size. Some even estimate her weight to be pushing 100kg.

The star’s binge follows a month of controversies, which has seen her South African school embroiled in a sex scandal, and Oprah accused of being an interference in not one, but two marriages.

For the full story, and to find out just how much Oprah ate in two days, see this week’s Woman’s Day (on-sale December 10).

Reese vs Abbie – You stole my family

Reese Witherspoon has lashed out at ex-hubby Ryan Phillippe’s girlfriend, Aussie actress Abbie Cornish, warning the woman she blames for the collapse of her marriage to stay away from her children.

The fiercely protective mum issued the stern advice to Abbie via her ex, after the 25-year-old starlet was spotted shopping for Christmas decorations with Reese’s daughter Ava, 8, while Ryan waited in the car park with son Deacon, 4.

“Reese really let Ryan have it for being so insensitive,” says a friend. “Seeing pictures of Abbie Christmas shopping with her daughter like she is family was just too much to bear.

“She told Ryan what she thought in no uncertain terms. She already blames Abbie for helping to destroy her marriage, and she’ll be damned if she’s about to let that woman steal her kids as well.”

I’m a stay-at-home mum, and a pole-dancer

I started doing pole-dancing classes earlier in the year and discovered I had a secret knack for exotic dancing. I really wanted to keep up the classes, but at $220 a term, they were too expensive (I had received a term of classes for Christmas). I also wanted to get a pole installed in my house, so I asked the teacher how much they cost (thinking it might be cheaper to get a pole at home and not pay for classes anymore).

When she told me how expensive they were, I had to tell her I couldn’t afford it. When she asked if I was going to continue the classes after the first term was up, I told her I’d love to, but as an at-home mum, with just my husband’s income and a decent mortgage, there was no way I could pay for next term. She said to me, “Too bad you’re not a dancer, you’d make heaps with that style of yours.” She giggled at the thought of her student becoming a real-life dancer, and I laughed along with her.

A few days later I realised her comment was still with me. There were so many things I wanted that I had gone without in the past year since I had given up working. On the whole I was happy, I’d never trade time with my son for the things money could buy, so going back to work wasn’t going to happen. But sometimes I had to admit going without new clothes and fancy dinners, and buying cheap steaks at the supermarket really got to me. My salary had been a good one, on my husband and my combined incomes we had had a pretty great lifestyle, so I knew what I was missing.

At the next class, I took my teacher aside and asked if she really thought I could make it as a pole dancer. She laughed at first, then when she realised I was serious she said, “Sure, you’d need more advanced moves, but you could easily pick them up.” She told me to stay after class. We talked about it and she agreed to teach me the advanced stuff during the week.

With my son asleep in his portacot in the spare room at the studio, my teacher taught me the fine art of professional pole dancing. Within a couple of weeks I had enough moves to audition at a club. While I wasn’t going to be a headliner with my inexperience — make no mistake, these girls are very talented and hard working — I was given a timeslot. Now to break it to my husband.

My husband had been so pleased that I’d taken up something by myself since having the baby, he’d encouraged me to get out and enjoy my hobby. I told him the classes were going so well that the teacher would take me on for free in exchange for teaching the beginners group. I also said I was meeting the girls from my group on Friday evenings for dinner, so that gave me three nights a week free to dance.

My husband doesn’t know about my new job — I make enough for the little extras I’ve done without for so long (how many men really know the cost of anything?) and miss no time with my son as he is asleep at home whenever I’m working. Plus I love what I do, and I’m really good at it. Fingers crossed I’ll never run into my husband at my club!

David Gest: My Bizarre Life

Liza Minnelli’s ex husband shares his crazy world with us.

For a troubled time, David Gest was known as that weird-looking bloke who married Liza Minnelli. Who could forget their bizarre wedding featuring Michael Jackson and Elizabeth Taylor as Best Man and Matron of Honour? Their union ended in tears. David claimed Liza bashed him, the papers had a field day. With his hair plugs and high cheekbones, he was painted as the ultimate freak from a twisted side-show.

But now, thanks to his big-hearted performance in UK-TV’s reality series, I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here, David, 54, is enjoying a new found wave of popularity. Woman’s Day caught up with Mr Gest for a decadent, refreshingly frank, over-the-top interview that was so long we couldn’t fit it all in the magazine — so we’ve published the rest here on the website.

For more of this interview, see this week’s Woman’s Day (on-sale December 3, 2007).

Some very cruel things have been said about your looks.

I don’t know why they do that.

Hugh Jackman played Peter Allen, Liza’s first husband. Who would play you, Andrew Lloyd Webber?

(Roars with laughter) No. Nicholas Cage.

Tell me about Jason Donovan, you guys have really become great mates? He’s a great guy, he’s rejuvenated himself. He went through that bad period. But he got off the drugs. He’s got two kids, I’m their uncle. We’re like two brothers that fight constantly but love each other.

Do you secretly wish that Jason and Kylie got back together?

No. That was yesterday. He’s got a lovely girl, Ange, and two great children. I haven’t met Kylie… Oh yes I have. I forgot. That’s what’s happened to my memory thanks to Miss Minnelli.

It must be great to be free of that Mr Minnelli tag?

Oh it’s the best thing in the world.

Those crosses around your neck, what do they mean?

They mean I’m a good Christian. I believe in Christianity. I converted when I met Liza to be a Methodist. I believe Jesus Christ is the Son Of God. I’m being totally serious. God changed my life in that jungle. I learned to be who I want to be. I believe in God strongly.

You’ve got a lot of young friends.

They’re all young. That whole life that I used to have has changed. When I was younger my best friends were Gene Kelly, Robert Mitchum, Joel McCrae. My second mother who really raised me is Jane Russell who is a legend. She knows me and I’m a little f***in’ rascal. But now I’m having fun in Camden in London. Go to the bars. And I’m doing Panto this year.

So England is home?

Yes, I’ll die there. I bought a home in Cambridge.

You’re very approachable, you stop and say hello to everyone.

Anyone who comes up to me of course I say hello. They made me.

You showed your determination to be normal on the show even cleaning out the toilets.

I did all the pooper scooper stuff. You couldn’t be a star there. I had to put myself in a different place. I decided, yes, I’m going to do this and I’m going to work with everyone here and make it a party. Which I did. I made it a team effort, I didn’t care about winning.

You didn’t flinch at the challenges the show threw your way. Nothing scared you. Does that come from hanging out with Michael Jackson where you were surrounded by snakes and bizarre creatures?

Yes.

Did you battle with anorexia.

No, again, that’s another piece of crap cooked up by a PR person.

You believe you made Liza a beautiful woman again.

The world can judge that. She was 249 pounds when I met her. Five months later, she’s a 109 and hot as can be. And anybody that would look at her would want to get her in bed she was so gorgeous. But it’s not so much the weight loss. I’ve learned now its not the way you look on the outside, it’s how you look on the inside that is so important. I think it takes a while to learn that. I could marry someone now who is heavy-set and not think twice about it if they have a good heart. They’ve just got a bit more to love and what’s wrong with that?

Do you miss her?

I don’t miss her, but I used to go to sleep on her left breast each night and it was a very comfortable pillow.

You saw what the tabloids did to Michael Jackson, but they went on to crucify you too?

Yes, Whitney said to me just after I married Liza, “Welcome to the club.” I’ll never forget that. I was sitting with Whitney Houston in my bedroom — me, Whitney, Bobby Brown and Liza. Little did I know how scary that club could be.

Larry tells: Dannielynn was worth the fight

Since Anna Nicole Smith’s death, Larry Birkhead has done nothing but fight — fight to be recognised as her baby’s birth father, to gain custody of his daughter and to clear his name from slanderous allegations of sex scandals and money-grubbing. All the while, he has been mourning the loss of his close friend Anna. In a candid and revealing interview in Woman’s Day, Larry opens up about his inner turmoil and how he’s doing his best to put the past behind him and raise his daughter.

What was it like the first time you took Dannielynn home to live with you?

She loved the nursery that I set up for her. I had been working on it for months before I was even named the father — that is how certain I was that Dannielynn was my daughter. I was a bit nervous at times and overly cautious as a parent, because I wanted to make sure that I was doing things just right.

What is it like being a single dad?

It is very hard not to have Anna to share the joy of parenthood with. One of the hardest things for me to cope with is that of all the pictures that I have taken in my career as a photographer, I will never have the one picture that I wanted — a family portrait. I will never have that opportunity to see Anna, myself and Dannielynn together as a happy family. Anna will never get to see her child grow up and Dannielynn will never know her mother and brother. It is a lot to digest.

How often do you see Howard? Does Dannielynn see him?

Very rarely. Contrary to reports, Howard and I are not best friends or anything else. I speak to him as it relates to Anna’s estate. He asks about Dannielynn and that is it.

Are you involved in the claim against J. Howard Marshall’s estate? What stage is it at? Is the figure US$227 million?

I do not know any of the figures. My daughter has a claim to her mother’s estate and that is the only reason that I have any involvement with that case. I think the press says it is from $80 million to $475 million, so who knows?

What do you miss about Anna Nicole?

I miss everything about her. I dream of her almost every night. I can almost hear her voice during the day when I am making decisions for Dannielynn. I listen and sometimes, as crazy as it sounds, I can hear her voice telling me the right thing to do. People will think I am crazy for saying that, but it is true. I really still feel like she is going to walk in the door any day. It is extremely hard for me to deal with, because I miss her so much.

Do you have concerns about your daughter’s future?

I think Dannielynn is going to have a great future and will be a beautiful girl like her mother. It saddens me to see all the press put a price tag on her head: “The $475 million-dollar baby” etc., in relation to the money she might be due from her mother’s late husband’s estate. Who knows if that will ever happen? I definitely am not going to die fighting for money like others in this whole case.
