I set up my best friend to look like a stalker!

My best friend Lyn was always lusting over guys she couldn’t have; they were always either married, in a serious relationship, or just not interested. Not that that was a problem of course — nothing ever happened between her and her latest love interest.

But the really infuriating thing was that Lyn was always convinced that the man in question was equally as besotted with her as she was with them. And that’s when it got annoying. All she could do was talk about how in love everyone was with her — every married man on the planet, apparently, was just waiting to leave their wife for her.

It didn’t get really personal though, until the day she announced her latest fatal attraction — her new gym instructor — and couldn’t help but add how much sexier, better looking and smarter he was than my own fiancé — who happened to be in the next room at the time!

If she’d just left it at that, I might have got over it. But she often brought it up: that she was going to marry a stud, while I settled for a pleb. I was furious.

Apart from anything else, I was willing to bet that Brett was, like everyone else before him, going to be completely out of reach. But Lyn never even seemed to consider this possibility. She just ran away with her love at first sight. I finally plucked up the courage to ask her if she had thought about this, and to my utter surprise she said yes! Brett was actually getting married.

For the first time, it dawned on me that Lyn might not be so innocently developing crushes: she was actually trying to break relationships up! It was time to teach her a lesson.

A few weeks later, Lyn went out of town on a business trip. I knew she was due back around 6pm — after which she would head straight for the gym. It was time to put my plan into action.

At about 5, I wondered down to her health club armed with my gym bag that was filled, not with gym clothes, but with propaganda. Paying for a casual day class, I strolled innocently into the women’s change rooms, and papered every locker with a hastily printed poster:

LYN JACKSON LOVES BRETT O’REILLY. SHE WANTS TO BREAK UP HIS MARRIAGE AND HAVE HIS CHILDREN. I LOVE YOU BRETT XOXO

I included a photo for good measure.

With every surface of the locker room covered in these posters, I hid in a toilet cubicle and waited. Several women came and went, laughing hysterically.

It wasn’t until I heard a harsh gasp, followed by footsteps running from the room, that I knew Lyn had seen it. I waited a few minutes and then left the gym, wondering what the fallout would be. As it turned out, it was far worse than I had anticipated.

My prank got back to Brett, and he quit as Lyn’s personal trainer. Then he got Lyn banned from the gym for apparently stalking him — which, with the evidence I had planted, looked pretty likely. Lyn was distraught. She couldn’t work out who had played the joke, and how Brett — who had once been so “in love with her” could suddenly treat her so badly. It was her complete failure to realise that he had never been interested that stopped me from feeling very guilty.

Lyn didn’t talk about a new fatal attraction for a very long time. I don’t think she ever suspected me, but she was suspicious of everyone. I enjoyed being able to have real conversations with her, about things I knew were the truth, all the while knowing that I was keeping a very big lie from her… That I’d set her up to look like a stalker!

‘Five a day’ to keep mental illness at bay

Getty Images

If you knew you could do just five simple things a day to stay sane — would you?

Scientists in the UK have found that simple social and personal activities like gardening or fixing things around the house can improve mental health just as much as eating a healthy diet of fresh fruit and vegetables can improve your physical wellbeing.

The Mental Capital and Wellbeing report was compiled by Foresight, a government think-tank consisting of more than 400 scientists. The report proposes a ‘five a day’ campaign which is modelled on the nutrition initiative, to encourage behaviour that will make people feel better about themselves and ward off insanity or mental illness later in life.

Felicia Huppert, Professor of Psychology at the University of Cambridge, who was involved in the project, said, “We found there are five categories of things that can make a profound difference to people’s wellbeing. Each has evidence behind it.” Actions like trying to connect and interact with others, staying active, taking notice of your surroundings, continuing learning and eduation and giving to your neighbours and communities, are so simple that advocates of this model believe that everyone should aim to do them daily — just like we are all encouraged to do with eating five portions of fruit and vegetables.

Five steps to happiness…

  • Connect

Developing relationships with family, friends, colleagues and neighbours will enrich your life and bring you support

  • Be active

Sports, hobbies such as gardening or dancing, or just a daily stroll will make you feel good and maintain mobility and fitness

  • Be curious

Noting the beauty of everyday moments as well as the unusual and reflecting on them helps you to appreciate what matters to you

  • Learn

Fixing a bike, learning an instrument, cooking – the challenge and satisfaction brings fun and confidence

  • Give

Helping friends and strangers links your happiness to a wider community and is very rewarding

While Foresight is headed by the UK Government’s chief scientist, Professor John Beddington, critics of the study say that prescribing such simple measures for something as serious as mental health is belittling and that a more personalised attitude needs to be taken for each individual patient. Claire Fox, director of the Institute of Ideas says, “The implication is that if you don’t do these banal things, you could get seriously mentally ill, and that trivialises serious mental illness. What is happiness, anyway? It’s so subjective.”

The study also found among other issues, that a strong link exists between mental illness and debt. 50 per cent of British people who are in debt have a mental disorder, compared with just 16 per cent of the general population.

Has Paris snagged Prince Wills?

The heiress sparks rumours of a royal romance after hooking up with Prince William at a London club.

Paris Hilton has hinted at a possible romance with Prince William after they exchanged phone numbers during a night at a London nightclub.

The American celebrity and Britain’s royal heir met at the Whisky Mist at Zeta club in The Hilton on Park Lane. Wills and brother Harry were there farewelling friends before taking off on their African motorbike adventure.

William’s long-time girlfriend Kate Middleton was absent from the bash and Paris’s lad — Good Charlotte rocker Benji Madden — was also missing.

Onlookers say that while William at first appeared reluctant to meet Paris, the 26-year-old eventually warmed to the hotel heiress, after being introduced by close friend and bar promoter Guy Pelly.

“Paris spotted William at the club and she immediately asked to be introduced,” says an insider. “They then spent the night talking, and when it came time for Paris to leave, they exchanged phone numbers.”

Jennifer Aniston’s baby shock

Rumoured to be expecting, Jen resigns herself to a less-than-ideal relationship for her child’s sake.

Jennifer Aniston has recommitted herself to her problem-riddled relationship with rocker John Mayer, after reportedly discovering she is pregnant to the playboy.

While Jen, 39, has long held a desire to start a family, friends say she was unhappy at the prospect of being a single mother, and decided it was better to be in a relationship that “needs some work”, rather than raise her baby alone.

The reunion has stunned friends, as after the two first split in August, John publicly said their relationship never stood a chance, admitting, “People are different. People have different chemistry.”

But they say Jen is willing to give it another try, and forget how outraged and disgusted she felt after John held an impromptu sidewalk press conference to discuss their failed relationship.

“Jen knew that her relationship with John had not been great, but she didn’t want to be a single mum, and felt forced to go back to him,” a close friend told Woman’s Day

Idol scandal: Would you miss your child’s birth for fame?

When Australian Idol hopeful Luke Dickens missed the birth of his first child to finish taping a live verdict show this month, his choice focused attention on the pressure contestants face to succeed in reality talent quests.

Luke had hoped to finish filming in Sydney before little Jordan arrived, but his partner Brooke Rodgers went into labour two months early.

While he caught a plane home to Canberra as soon as the show finished, flight delays meant he missed his son’s birth by 20 minutes.

Luke says that to pull out of the show would have focused unnecessary public attention on the birth when they didn’t know how things were going to pan out. Now Luke is more than making up for not being there and declares Jordan is “a little gem. He’s just beautiful.”

We asked Idol judge Ian “Dicko” Dickson and radio host Kate Langbroek if they thought any singing competition could be worth missing such a once-in-a-lifetime event…
