Kerryn McCann, 1967-2008: Her brave fight to the end

By Jenny Brown

Pictures: Grant Turner/mediakoo.

Kerryn stored up memories for her young family before losing the race she most wanted to win.

At the end of her toughest race, marathon champ Kerryn McCann died as she had lived, surrounded by the love of her husband and three children.

Family was the thing this quiet achiever valued most — more than any sporting glory, more than her two hard-won Commonwealth gold medals.

That’s why Kerryn was so determined to beat the aggressive breast cancer, diagnosed when she was six months pregnant with her last child, baby Cooper.

“Of course I’m going to fight, not least because of my beautiful and amazing family,” she said in October, revealing that the disease had spread into her liver. “If I don’t succeed, I want the children simply to know how very much I love them.”

Sadly, however, the Olympian lost her battle late at night on December 7. She had struggled to hang on for one last Christmas with the people she most adored — coalminer husband Greg and their family — but it was not to be.

Aged only 41, Kerryn passed away quietly at home in seaside Coledale, near Wollongong in southern NSW, where she grew up and first discovered a passion for distance running.

Her husband and children, Benton, 11, “princess” Josie, 5, and 14-month-old Cooper, were by her bedside. Heartbreakingly, little Josie later returned there snuggling up under the doona as she cried for her mummy’s return.

“Kerryn fought so hard, she was such a fighter,” grief-stricken Greg, a former Australian surf champion, told well-wishers. “She was surrounded by the love of her family.”

Exclusive: Reggie goes to guide dog school

By Monique Butterworth

Pictures: Paul Broben

The Big Brother star is trying to come to terms with her fast-fading sight.

Closely watching the joy on her daughter Mia’s face as she encounters Tilly, a five-month-old golden retriever guide-dog-in-waiting, Regina “Reggie” Sorensen laughs as Mia squeals “woo woo” — her word for dog.

But behind Reggie’s laugh is the frightening knowledge that this initial meeting with Tilly, at Guide Dogs Queensland, signals the beginning of her future without sight.

Six months ago, the popular 2003 Big Brother winner was diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa (RP) — an inherited, degenerative condition that affects the retina, the light-sensitive part of the eye. Affecting one in 3000 Australians, the progression of RP varies considerably from person to person, so Reggie doesn’t know how long it will be before she goes blind.

For Reggie, who will have to decide whether or not to apply for a guide dog, this is the first step in the daunting process of accepting that she needs assistance.

“It’s just so overwhelming,” says Reggie, as she goes through a selection of white canes with Bashir Ebrahim, Guide Dogs Queensland Manager of Rehabilitation Services. “I am finding it hard to come to terms with what’s happening.

“I have always been so independent, I don’t like relying on people or asking for help — even though I need help. The Guide Dogs people told me people are often in denial about what is happening,” she says, before adding, “I’ll learn how to use the cane in the New Year.”

Nuts every day keeps heart disease at bay!

Photos by Getty Images

Adding a handful of nuts a day to your diet for a year or more may help prevent, and even undo, a collection of risk factors for heart disease.

Spanish researchers have found that along with a Mediterranean diet rich in fruit, vegetables and fish, that adding nuts to your daily food intake is more effective in cutting heart risks than upping the amoung of olive oil consumed per day. However, adding both these healthy fats to your diet lessened heart problems far more than a typical low-fat diet.

Nuts are commonly known for being high in fat and for this reason are normally taboo in a low-fat diet. However, nuts are high in protein and are a good source of ‘healthy fats’ while also containing all the vitamins (including antioxidants) and minerals our bodies need. Despite the high fat and calorie content of nuts, people who add a handful of these delicious snacks to their diets apparently don’t gain weight.

Dr. JoAnn Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Harvard’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital said of this recent research that, “What’s most surprising is they found substantial metabolic benefits in the absence of calorie reduction or weight loss.”

The study which was published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, discovered that people who improved the most ate three whole walnuts, seven or eight whole hazelnuts and seven or eight whole almonds per day. While the subjects didn’t actually lose weight, a significant percentage of them succeeded in reducing abdominal fat and improved both their cholesterol and blood pressure.

Dr Manson stressed that simply adding nuts to a Western diet — laden with calories and fat — was not the best approach as this could lead to more weight gain and increased heart risks. People wanting to take advantage of this new research should try to replace unhealthy snacks, like packets of chips or fast food, with a handful of nuts instead, Manson suggests.

With around 25-30 per cent of Australians displaying at least one symptom of metabolic syndrome — a combination of health risks, such as high blood pressure and abdominal obesity — finding a way to reduce or reverse this condition would mean huge health improvements for many of us.

Aussie teen: The fight to save my arms

At just 18, Tiffany Upton’s life took a horror turn in a work accident that almost robbed her of both arms, but the brave Queenslander has handled her ordeal with amazing strength and optimism…

All Tiffany Upton wants for Christmas is to put her arms around her family ? a simple wish she will have to wait two years to fulfil.

In a shocking industrial accident two months ago, the petite blonde teenager’s arms were almost ripped off and were left savagely damaged. Doctors compared her injuries to those of a shark attack.

But Tiffany, 18, from the small town of Killarney, about two hours’ drive south-west of Brisbane, has amazed doctors with her positive outlook and the progress she has made since her ghastly experience.

However, they have warned her that normal physical activity ? even giving her mum a proper, loving hug ? may not be possible for two years. Even after that, her arm movements could be severely restricted.

“Right now, I can just about manage to give Mum a half hug,” she says, with not a hint of self-pity. “Just a one-armed hug with my less damaged left arm. But at least I’ve come out of this nightmare alive, and one day when I’m better I’ll definitely give Mum a really big hug the way I used to do. I’ve promised her that.”

Reese tells: Family, feuds and love again

**By Gill Pringle

The sweetheart of the silver screen talks about the juggling act that is her life…**

Reese Witherspoon can certainly relate to Kate, the young woman she plays in her new film, Four Holidays. Together with her boyfriend Brad (Vince Vaughn), Kate has to endure four festive season celebrations with their respective divorced parents and extended families.

Reese herself was divorced in June this year, ending her nine-year marriage to Ryan Phillippe, whom she met at her 21st birthday party in 1997. The couple share custody of their two children, Ava, 9, and Deacon, 5. For more than a year now, the Avon Global Ambassador has been dating her Rendition co-star Jake Gyllenhaal, 27.

While Kate has a bumpy Christmas ride, 32-year-old Reese hopes for a peaceful, romantic holiday season surrounded by her loved ones.

Four Holidays, which opens in Australia on December 4, also features several other A-list actors such as Mary Steenburgen and Sissy Spacek. Did you enjoy working with them?

It was so fun. It was great to just — and Jon Voight and Robert Duvall. I have the biggest crush on Robert Duvall. He’s such a great Southern guy, — he was so great in The Apostle and Tender Mercies. Big crush. And Sissy was so great too. We talked about playing country singers and stuff like that. There were a lot of Oscars on the set.

Did everybody bring theirs in?

Bring your Oscar to work day?! No, but we should have. It would have been really funny.

Is Christmas and the holidays a happy or stressful time for you?

There’s many stages — first there’s panic. I walked into Starbucks last week and they were already playing Christmas music and I had an absolute panic attack. I was like, “Turn if off! I’m not ready!” I think I have to get through Thanksgiving first, then it starts with the parties then the family. That’s when the family starts trickling, and then you finally get rid of the family and then you get to sleep for a few days, and then it’s New Years. Then it’s all over! You know?!

Do you miss it when it’s all over?

No, I’m not that kinda person. I’m a go-forward gal!

Do you remember, as a child, when you found out there is no Santa?

That for me was in the second grade when Mary-Beth decided to get up and for show and tell told everyone there was no Santa Claus. The whole class burst into tears and she got into a lot of trouble and got sent home.

Did you believe her?

Well, no, because she had to come back the next day and say it wasn’t really true. She was just really lying to hurt people’s feelings. Poor thing. It was a psychological mess.

Do your own kids believe in Santa Claus, and how would you feel if an uncle came to them and told them Santa didn’t exist?

My kids believe in all sorts of things. We have all sorts of fairies for different holidays. Like, we have a Halloween fairy and on top of the tooth fairy and the Easter Bunny. I think, “How did this happen that I also have to get more things?” But, yeah, they still do and I don’t know. Kids find out that kind of stuff on their own.

But what if another grown-up told them?

What?! Are you suggesting there’s not a Santa Claus?! Is that what you’re saying? I don’t know what you’re talking about. I don’t want to hear that any more.

Growing up, how did you spend Christmas?

We always had to go to church and nativity plays and all that kind of stuff so growing up. I did a lot of that.

What do you personally enjoy doing at Christmas?

I go to church on Christmas Eve and I like to hear the music and all that kind of stuff, and be quiet and thoughtful about what the holiday really means for me. Then it’s just about family and togetherness. It’s about a lot of cooking and playing games and kids. It’s all about them enjoying their day and doing what they love to do. That’s why it makes it so much better when you have children around you, you can see the joy that they have. Yeah, I think a lot of it is about traditions. We tried to explore each one of those traditions in the film. We had family photos and playing games and all kinds of stuff that people mark as traditions in their family.

What would you like for Christmas this year?

Oh gosh. I have a big garden so I could really use some help because that’s a lot of work. Sometimes I get tired of doing all that stuff but I like it, it’s kind of nice.

So you want a gardener?

Oh yeah, that’d be nice! I have a farm so I like chickens, I’d like an Araucana chicken. That’d be nice — it would lay blue eggs. And I know I’m going to get hounded this year for a horse. I have a feeling I know I’m going to have two little people pulling on my leg going, “Can we have a horse? Can we have a horse?” But, gosh, can’t we just get through Thanksgiving? So much pressure!

There’s a scene in the film where the family has a $10 budget. How would your own family respond to that?

Oh, wouldn’t that be great? Wouldn’t it be great to record the look on their faces? No, my family always had a thing where everybody always got one thing, whether it was like chocolates or flowers — it would be the nicest little chocolates you could get or the one really nice toy that was beautifully made. It was always about the quality of things and not the quantity of things.

What does family mean to you?

Family is so important. You have to accept them as they are because, honestly, they’re not going to change.

Any other insight into relationships?

The truth is, people tend to evaluate their own relationships in comparison to that of their parents, and that can be a daunting prospect in many ways.

Four Holidays is screening nationally now.

K-Fed breaks his silence

Kevin Federline has spoken out for the first time about his marriage to Britney Spears…

Britney Spears’ ex-husband Kevin Federline has opened up about his tumultuous relationship with the pop princess, revealing the emotional hell that ended their union and disputing her claims that he dumped her.

Kevin’s decision to speak out in the explosive interview with US People magazine, comes after Britney, 27, blamed the father of her two boys, Sean Preston, 3, and Jayden James, 2, for their marriage breakdown in her recent documentary, Britney: For the Record.

“He started to do things for himself, and I just never saw him any more,” Britney said, before admitting she married for the wrong reason.

“Instead of following my heart and doing something that made me really happy, I just did it for the idea of everything,” she said.

Kevin claims the comments struck a devastating blow: “I don’t understand it. I can’t really tell you how it was for her, but I know for me, I fell in love,” he told the magazine. “And I loved the idea that I was in love and I got married and had two beautiful children.”

Days after announcing her split from husband number four, Ivana cosies up to his double…

Ivana Trump has already found a new love interest, just days after announcing the end of her seven-month marriage to Italian actor Rossano Rubicondi.

Showing no signs of a broken heart, Ivana, 59, was spotted cosying up to French model John-David Dery, 22, at an event in Paris. The odd pair happily kissed and cuddled, with J-D saying, “I like this woman passionately”.

Last week, Ivana confirmed the split with Rossano, 35, following reports he’d cheated on her with an Argentinian model while filming Italian Celebrity Survivor.

However, she insists they split several months earlier and divorce papers show they legally separated in August. “I didn’t want to spoil his chances of winning the TV show,” Ivana says of her previous silence.

“Rossano wants to live in Miami and work in Milan. But I am a New Yorker and my family, my friends and business are all here. As the beautiful song says, ‘Que sera, sera’,” a nonchalant Ivana said.
