Don Lane tribute – Farewell our lanky yank

As the nation says goodbye to Don Lane, we remember the entertainer we took into our hearts.

Don Lane came to Australia for a six-week stint as a TV host and stayed a lifetime. His contract was immediately extended to 40 weeks, when Nine Network executives recognised his talent as an all-round entertainer who could sing, dance and tell jokes.

Australia fell in love with Don Lane, and he fell in love with us. His popularity was monumental, and for many years he was our highest paid entertainer.

Along with performing, Don was a fervent supporter of the South Sydney Football Club. Once, when asked to address the team before a vital first grade game, Don became so excited he used his arms like windmills to make a point – and his expensive watch came off his wrist and crashed to the dressing room floor.

As Don remembered it years later, “I knew in a flash that I could either stop talking and lose the momentum with the team I had been building up, or I could do something else.

“I stamped on the watch, breaking it with my shoe. It was wrecked, but I kept the team’s attention.”

Don, born Morton Donald Isaacson in New York on November 13, 1933, changed his name to Don Lane when he went into show business.

He was working at the Copacabana in Hawaii when he was recruited by a man who would become his closest friend, producer John Collins. John had been searching for someone to take over the Tonight show in Sydney and asked Las Vegas performer Wayne Newton for advice.

“Only one man for the job,” Wayne said. “A man called Don Lane, who is working in Honolulu.”

Tom drags Katie back to Scientology

As Katie increasingly asserts her independence, Tom tries to bring her back into the fold.

Tom Cruise is pulling out all the stops to lure Katie Holmes back into the world of Scientology, last week dragging her to a bizarre rally in the UK for the religion’s followers.

The actor – who has reluctantly agreed to his wife’s request that their three-year-old daughter, Suri, attend a Catholic preschool – jetted into Britain with Katie for the October 16 event.

It is believed to be the first time the actress has attended a Scientology event in more than five months, and follows reports that she is considering a return to her family’s Catholic faith.

The gathering, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the International Association of Scientologists, also comes amid increasing criticism in Europe of the religion, which has been described as a cult.

But Tom remains a staunch believer – taking to the stage at Saint Hill Manor in Sussex to whip the 4000 faithful attendees into a frenzy.

“Because we never took our eyes off the ultimate prize, we stand where we are today,” he preached. “We are in this together.”

When a choir took to the stage, Tom was carried away in the moment – but Katie appeared much less enthusiastic.

Tracey Wickham: My daughter’s death still haunts me

Two years after her teenage daughter succumbed to cancer, the former swim star tells Julie Hayne why she is still tormented by unanswered questions.

The tragic death of her teenage daughter from cancer still haunts swimming legend Tracey Wickham. It has turned her into a recluse, barely able to leave her house.

The free spirit who brought Australia gold medal glory in the pool from 1978 to 1982 was so devastated by the loss of Hannah two years ago that she put her whole life on hold.

Only now is she able to face the world again, and rebuild a relationship with her daughter’s widower, Tom O’Driscoll.

“I spent the first 12 months just shutting myself off from the world,” Tracey reveals. “I’d take the phone off the hook and close the curtains.

“Going grocery shopping to put some food in the fridge was an effort, because I just wanted to sit at home in my PJs, shut the house up, and make the world go away. I couldn’t deal with anything and, as anyone who has lost a child would know, you can go to some very dark places.”

Before her death from synovial sarcoma, a rare form of cancer that attacks muscles, fat and fibrous tissue, 19-year-old Hannah married Tom in an emotional bedside ceremony. Three hours later, she died.

Tracey, known for her courage and discipline as a swimmer, says she simply had no way of controlling the heartbreak she has felt since Hannah’s death.

“People often say to me, ‘It’s been almost two years now. It’s time to move on,” she says, shaking her head sadly. “Or they say things like, ‘I lost my great aunt last year, so I know how you’re feeling.’

“I feel like screaming when people say things like that, because no-one understands how it feels unless they, too, have lost a child,” explains Tracey, who admitted herself to hospital seeking treatment for depression six months after Hannah’s death.

Memories of wonderful times dance through Tracey’s head along with sad reminders.

“Mother’s Day, birthdays – hers and mine – Christmas, the thought of being cheated out of watching my daughter’s children grow up … how are you supposed to just ‘move on’ when it still hurts so much?”

Star’s dad tells: Why I’ll never see Heath’s last film

Heath Ledger fans will be queuing this week to catch a last glimpse of the Aussie actor in his final film, The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus – but his family want nothing to do with it.

Amid controversy over the way the movie was completed without its main star – who passed away during a break in filming on January 22 last year – Heath’s dad, Kim, says he can’t bear to see his son’s swansong.

“We haven’t been able to watch any films, let alone Heath movies,” Kim revealed in an exclusive chat with Woman’s Day’s The Lowdown. “And it’s for this reason we find ourselves uninterested in The Imaginarium Of Dr Parnassus.”

The $45 million movie, directed by Terry Gilliam, was thrown into disarray when the Perth-born actor died after overdosing on a mixture of prescription drugs.

“We’ve been sitting on the fence for so long, wondering how interested we’re going to be in this film,” admits Kim, who publicly got behind Heath’s last completed movie, The Dark Knight – attending the premiere in New York and accepting his son’s Best Supporting Actor Oscar for the role. “[But] we’re just not that interested.

“There are too many shots of Heath unmasked, and with this year being so hard for us all, none of us really wants to see it.”

Jackie Brygel meets some of the women who want to win his heart.

Dared by her sister and a close friend to write to Toby, Emily Bruce, from Newcastle, says she found our interview with the singer to be “quite comforting”.

“Like Toby, I’m a 30-year-old school teacher who’s been accused of being ‘too picky’,” she says. “I dream of having a family of my own and sharing this with my soul mate.”

Convinced Toby is a genuine guy, Emily wants the singer to know there’s “nothing wrong with waiting for the right one”.

A single mother of two, Brisbane hotel manager Tammy Falso believes she and Toby have much in common.

“Like Toby, I want to make sure the person I meet is right,” Tammy, 29, says. “But if I had a dollar for every time someone said, ‘Why are you still single?’, I’d be a millionaire by now!”

And Tammy laughingly reveals her daughters have also given Toby their blessing. “We watch him every week on Idol and I’ve always said ‘I’m going to marry him, girls!'”

Based in South Australia, where she works as a medical receptionist, Teresa has been won over by what she calls Toby’s “generosity”.

“When he sings, it’s from the heart – and that’s exactly what he’s about,” she says.

Jihanne Azemothe, 23, who works in real estate in Victoria, was instantly drawn to Toby.

“He has that shyness about him,” she says. “Because I’m very outgoing, I feel it’s good to have that balance.”

Single for six months, after coming out of a relationship, Jihanne says she’s ready to give love “another go”.

Vanessa Amorosi: I’m over the moon

As Vanessa Amorosi celebrates her new chart-topping single, she talks to Lucie Morris-Marr about her dark struggle for self-esteem.

They are strong statements, but Vanessa Amorosi says it’s time to speak the truth. In a candid show of openness, the singer has revealed the personal misery which came as the direct result of being catapulted to fame as a teenager.

She may have wowed the world at the opening ceremony of the 2000 Sydney Olympics with her incredible vocal ability, and sold 1.6 million albums, but she says growing up in the public eye left her constantly doubting herself and her looks.

Speaking of the raw lyrics in her current hit song, which make clear how she spent years “hating” herself, Vanessa tells Woman’s Day it’s only now, aged 28, she has the confidence to talk about her darker moments.

“When you are a kid, people want you to grow up so soon. I had to grow up real quick, but unfortunately my brain was still a child – and that is what created most of my strife I think.”

But Vanessa says writing her current number one song, defiantly titled This Is Who I Am, helped her express the sadness she kept hidden for so many years. Lines in the powerful Pink-style song include, “I spent years hating me, longing to be friends”, and “I don’t care if I’m fat”.

Vanessa was set on the path to stardom by former managers Mark Holden and Jack Strom, signing a recording contract at just 16, and she says those lyrics describe the “difficult times” she had coping with life in the sometimes harsh spotlight…

Jodi’s wild ways are over

Following a scandalous fall from grace in June, Home And Away‘s Jodi Gordon is on the road to recovery, writes Lucie Morris-Marr.

The road to redemption may be long and arduous, but a newly fit Jodi Gordon is taking it all in her stride. Having recently passed a major milestone on her journey of recovery, the actress has finally got her life back on track, telling friends she has “completely changed” her wild ways.

Gone are the late-night parties and boozy benders of the past, instead replaced with quiet trips to the cinema with friends, as she concentrates on a vigorous detox regimen that combines healthy eating with regular exercise.

Indeed, the athletic young soap star is frequently spotted pounding the pavement on Sydney’s North Shore as she focuses on getting her life back in shape. But while Jodi, 24, looks more energetic and happy, she knows she still has a long way to go to atone for her alleged drug-fuelled night with bikie Mark Judge earlier this year.

Jodi made headlines across the country when she was found cowering in the bedroom of Mark’s Bellevue Hill home in June after a reported cocaine binge – after her then boyfriend, Seven Network heir Ryan Stokes, notified police that she was missing.

She was found when police responded to a report claiming five gun-toting men were trying to break in to Mark’s apartment. Jodie later conceded that she and Mark had been hallucinating when they called for help. The scandal ended her romance with Ryan and threatened to derail her acting career – and came as a stark warning that she desperately needed to confront her demons.

Heeding the message, Jodi sought solace with her mother, Bronwyn, preferring to stay with her on the North Shore rather than face the solitude of her own pad after moving out of Ryan’s $4.5 million Walsh Bay apartment…

Lisa Curry: I want Grant back

Four months after storming out on her marriage, the swimming legend is going all out to win back her husband, Grant Kenny.

Standing face to face on the crisp, white sand of a Queensland beach, Lisa Curry and Grant Kenny soaked up the sun and delighted in each other’s company, oblivious to other people on the beach.

It was Lisa – dressed to thrill in beach wear with her super-fit, tanned body on show – who seemed to be having the most fun. Smiling happily, the former swimming champ made a game out of stealing her estranged husband’s sunnies, then playfully foiling his efforts to get them back.

“She was madly flirting with Grant – giggling like a schoolgirl, stroking his arm and making plenty of eye contact. He was trying to concentrate on what was happening in the ocean, but she kept teasing him and grabbing his attention – it was so cute,” says one observer.

“For a wife who supposedly wants a divorce, Lisa seemed very aware of him. Even when she greeted their other ironman mates with a kiss and hug, she kept looking over to make sure Grant was watching, as if she was trying to spark a little jealousy.”

On the very stretch of Gold Coast sand where they first met as teenagers nearly three decades ago, the Curry-Kennys were reunited as proud parents of their youngest child Jett, 14, who was competing for Mooloolaba Surf Club in the Coolangatta Gold junior event.

“It was like old times seeing them hanging out together, chatting in the sun. They are the two biggest celebrities in surf lifesaving circles, so Lisa and Grant being on again of course became the talk of the beach,” says a former ironman and friend of the couple.

“We were all stunned to hear they’d split, so it would be a very popular move if they gave their marriage another go. They do suit each other, and when you have that special kind of connection, it doesn’t just vanish overnight.

“Everyone who knows them has their fingers and toes crossed they’ll make it – we’re all hoping it’s not too late.”

Lisa stormed out of their luxury marital home on the Sunshine Coast in June – leaving Grant after 23 years of marriage and taking refuge in a beachfront penthouse before launching into a torrid fling with a much younger man, “love rat” Adrian Hunter.

Despite the split being Lisa’s decision, it is understood she’s recently had a change of heart…
