Web surfing makes you smarter

Using the Internet stimulates your brain and may even help to counteract any age-related physiological changes that cause brain fog and poor memory, says a study from the University of California, Los Angeles.

The study, which was reported in the American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry, found that online searching significantly enhanced brain circuitry and helped to prevent brain-cell shrinkage and loss.

Interestingly, the results were stronger for Internet use than for other better-known techniques for stimulating the brain, such as reading and doing crossword puzzles. Study author Dr Gary Small says this may be because Internet use requires decision-making and complex reasoning, such as making comparisons and using lateral thinking.

Your say: What do you think of these findings? How regularly do you use the Internet? Share with us below…

Ange is no fan of fidelity

Angelina Jolie

When it comes to being faithful to her partner, Angelina Jolie doesn’t seem to be too much of a fan.

The 34-year-old actress opened up to German magazine Das Neue, revealing that she doesn’t believe in fidelity being important in relationships.

“I doubt that fidelity is absolutely essential for a relationship. It’s worse to leave your partner and talk badly about him afterwards,” the mother of six said.

“Neither Brad nor I have ever claimed that living together means to be chained together. We make sure that we never restrict each other.”

The star also added that her relationship with Brad Pitt was rocky at times.

“The sparks fly at home if the nice Brad fails to see that he’s wrong and reacts in a defiant way. Then I can get so angry that I tear his shirt.”

The pair sparked a relationship while on the set of Mr & Mrs Smith in 2004 at the same time Brad was married to Jennifer Aniston.

However, Angelina has strongly denied in previous interviews that she had an affair with a married man.

“To be intimate with a married man, when my own father cheated on my mother, is not something I could forgive. I could not look at myself in the morning, if I did that,” she said.

We’ve had HIV for 22 years and our child never knew

We've had HIV for 22 years and our child never knew

Tenika Walker was a baby when her parents learnt they had AIDS. They tell why they kept the news from her.

They kept it a secret from their daughter all her life. But after more than 20 years, Stephen and Wendy Walker decided it was time to reveal their chilling news: “We have AIDS.”

And while it was difficult to make the momentous confession, the Perth couple say they are just glad they had the opportunity to do so. After all, when they were first diagnosed with HIV in 1987, the doctor’s predictions were grim.

“We believed we wouldn’t be alive by the time our baby daughter, Tenika, was 10 years old,” Wendy, now 52, recalls.

“We were told that being HIV positive was a death sentence.” It was then that the couple made the extraordinary decision to conceal their HIV status from their daughter, to protect her from worrying about their health.

“If Tenika saw us taking medication, which we’ve both had to do daily for 22 years, we’d tell her they were vitamins, or something like that,” Wendy admits. “We hardly told a soul about our condition. We told our parents and siblings, but one member of our family behaved so strangely towards me after finding out, I didn’t feel comfortable telling others.

“Stephen and I will never know which one of us got the virus first and passed it on to the other, and that doesn’t matter to us,” she adds. “As we’re not drug takers, one of us obviously got it through sex. We both had other sexual partners before we got together in 1983.”

But the pair – both still in miraculously good health thanks to advances in medication – decided they no longer wanted to live a lie, and nervously broke the news to Tenika, now 22.

Shocked at first, their daughter, a psychology student, says she quickly came to terms with her parents’ disease.

“Mum took me to dinner and just suddenly came out with it,” Tenika recalls. “She cried as she told me, ‘There’s something I have to tell you. Your dad and I are HIV positive.’

“I think I took it all pretty well. I can see why my parents felt the need to lie to me; they just didn’t want me to worry. They didn’t know how I’d react. But really, I don’t blame them for lying. I was more concerned they were going to be OK. “In a way, it’s brought us all even closer,” she adds. “I know I can discuss anything with Mum and Dad. There are no secrets now.”

Tenika says she also now understands why her dad would cry every time she had a birthday.

Chantelle Newbery’s Triumph

Chantelle Newbery’s Triumph

After two suicide attempts, the Olympic diving gold medallist tells Glen Williams she’s putting her life back together.

Her smile is uncertain at first. It creeps up tentatively, almost as if it needs permission, before lighting up her face.

For the past eight months, Chantelle Newbery has been trying to dig herself out of a very dark hole. Immobilised by depression, she spent her days wallowing indoors with the blinds pulled down, lacking the will even to get out of bed.

The last time Woman’s Day met Chantelle her marriage was in tatters, she was feeling “scared” and “lost”, and calling herself a hopeless mum to her two young sons. She was tear-stained and racked with guilt following two failed suicide attempts.

Thankfully, it’s a very different Chantelle, freshly returned from a self-imposed stint in a Sydney rehabilitation hospital, who greets us this time.

Opening the door to her Brisbane home, there is a healthy sparkle in her eyes, an energy to her once lethargic movements, and a certainty when she speaks. And the smile, when it does come, radiates a new found peace.

“I’m feeling a lot better, I’ve come a long way since we last met,” Chantelle, 32, says. “That dark time is a bit of a blur to me now. One day kept rolling into another, and nothing ever got better. But now, things keep getting better.

“The bad feeling does come back every now and then, I don’t think I will ever get over it totally, but I’ve learnt to work on strategies to try to keep me on top of things, so that I won’t spiral out of control.”

The bottom line for Chantelle Newbery, who captured our hearts with her gold-winning dive from the 10m tower at the 2004 Athens Olympics – our first diving gold medal in 80 years – is that she’s learning how to be happy again.

The young woman who found herself “crying tears for no reason” is determined her two boys, Jet, 7, and Ryder, 3, will not remember her as a tragically sad mum. “I hope they can see me as a happier mum,” she says. “They’re perceptive. They picked up on my sadness, so hopefully they can pick up on my increasingly happier mood.

Julia’s druken rampage

Julia Roberts

With her career and marriage under new pressure, the mother of three makes a spectacle of herself on a rare night out.

Actress Julia Roberts caused chaos at a star-studded fundraiser in New York last week. Hogging the microphone, she drunkenly ranted and embarrassed her peers and her husband, Danny Moder.

The uncomfortable scenes come in the wake of her sliding box office fortunes and the star’s confession that being a stay-at-home mum isn’t the bed of roses she once claimed.

Attending the Celebrity Charades event at New York’s LAByrinth Theater, Julia appeared keen not to waste any time – starting the evening early as she downed a string of beverages before hitting the stage.

“She was drinking vodka and tonic beforehand and was pretty tipsy by the time things started,” one guest told the New York Post. “None of her team-mates could decipher any of her clues.”

Clearly the worse for wear, Julia stunned the star-studded audience as she launched into a tirade, saying she rarely gets out. “I usually go to sleep at 8.15,” she ranted. “Let’s have some fun – I’m wearing tight pants and my kids are asleep!”

Throwing her former image as America’s sweetheart to the wind, a tipsy Julia then turned the air blue with her foul language.

“She screamed to the audience, ‘I can’t f** lose on this!’” reports another guest. “At one point, [actor] Sam Rockwell tried to carry her off stage, as he asked for ‘three bottles of water for Ms Roberts’.”

Danny looked on with raised eyebrows as the star offered to kiss anyone in the crowd who would bid for charity, but as the night wore on, her behaviour became more lewd.

“She tried to get her team to guess In The Heat Of The Night by rolling on the stage floor and pretending to make out with herself,” reveals a witness.

The 42-year-old star, who has made only a handful of films since the birth of her now five-year-old twins, Phinnaeus and Hazel, once claimed she was never bored devoting herself to her kids, even waxing lyrical about the joys of removing splinters.

“My life at home gives me absolute joy,” she boasted. “It’s super fun.” But earlier this year, with two-year-old son Henry added to the mix, she confessed that not everything was as rosy at home as she had claimed.

Bittersweet reunion for the Kidmans

Kidmans

The Kidman clan have come together this Christmas for a joyous celebration before a heartbreaking farewell.

This festive season will be unforgettable for the Kidman clan. With Nicole bringing daughter Sunday Rose home to Australia for a rare visit and sister Antonia getting ready to walk down the aisle with fiancé Craig Marran, a host of special family memories are in the making.

But for parents Antony and Janelle, these moments will be ones to savour and cling to in the coming months, when both their daughters and their grandchildren head off to their new lives overseas.

Dr Kidman and his wife are used to farewelling movie star Nicole – who has lived the globetrotting lifestyle for many years – and have accepted that her home is now in Tennessee with rocker husband Keith Urban and little Sunday.

Yet this summer, they will also have to say goodbye to Antonia as she prepares to start a new life overseas with Craig.

Antonia has made the heartwrenching decision to relocate with her four children, Lucia, 10, Hamish, 8, James, 6, and Sybella, 2, to Singapore, where Craig is based.

Although overjoyed at Antonia’s newfound happiness, after seeing her through her devastating divorce to Angus Hawley, Janelle is said to be particularly distressed about the move, as she will miss out on seeing her grandchildren grow up before her eyes.

While the grandparents will no doubt be clocking up the frequent flyer points to visit both their daughters, those effortless catch-ups, sleepovers and afternoons after school with Antonia’s kids will be a thing of the past.

The close-knit clan will have to work hard to stay close – although so far, they don’t seem to have allowed distance to come between them.

Jana and Chris reunited: I couldn’t live without him!

Jana Rawlinson

The sporting couple put the pain of their recent split behind them and become a family again.

Jana Rawlinson’s big heart is beating fast, as if she has just crossed the finish line in the race of her life.

“I feel elated, on top of the world,” laughs the star hurdler as she wraps her arms around husband Chris and their son, Cornelis. “That’s what it means for the three of us to be together, a family again after so much time apart.”

Yes, it’s true, the Rawlinsons – Australian sport’s roller-coaster couple – are back on track and giving their marriage another chance, relying on the power of love to erase the pain of their “worst year ever”.

They are so sure of their feelings, Jana and Chris are preparing to marry again, even though the divorce Jana set in motion last year will only become final in early 2010. “We don’t care – we want to get married again, just us this time on a deserted beach somewhere,” Jana says, smiling into Chris’s eyes.

“It’s been a hard road, but we now know without any question that we are meant to be together. That’s something we will be celebrating for the rest of our lives.”

Jana, 27, admits their seven-month separation, which made headlines, almost robbed her of the love of her life and destroyed their family. “We’ve both been to hell and back,” she says.

“But Chris is a real fighter and so am I, and no matter what happened, deep down we never gave up on each other. “I was miserable without him, and our heartache hit me harder than losing at the Olympics or anything sport-related. It’s just the best feeling to be back to us.”

Elle at 46: I feel better than ever!

Elle Macpherson

Elle Macpherson and her trainer reveal how the supermodel stays naturally fabulous.

She’s been our most recognisable body for more than two decades but, at 46, Elle Macpherson believes she is only just coming into her prime.

And while she admits her body is not quite as trim and taut as it used to be, the Aussie says having a “healthy attitude” to life and working out for an hour each day have kept her in top condition – even after two kids.

“I feel better than I’ve ever felt,” Elle tells Woman’s Day. “My body’s not the same as it was 20 years ago – I’ve had two children and no surgery. But I try to put aside an hour a day, five days a week, to do some sort of physical exercise, whether it’s pilates or running in the park.”

It’s not just about looking good – it’s about feeling good too. And Elle says staying fit helps her unwind at the end of a stressful day and, more importantly, keep up with her boisterous young sons, Flynn, 11, and Cy, 6.

“Sometimes I need to run, other times to meditate. Sometimes I need to dance with my kids, and sometimes I just need a good meal,” she says.

And while she also credits “good genes” for her sleek physique, celebrity trainer James Duigan, who has worked with Elle for 12 years, says there is actually a simple science to achieving your best beach body – at any age.

“Elle is not your average body, it’s true – she is ‘The Body’, after all,” James admits. “But Elle has a really holistic approach to her health. It sounds boring, but it’s all about getting back to basics as well as understanding a little nutritional science.”

According to James, there are five keys to Elle’s “clean, green, lean” look.

Olivia Newton John’s daughter strip club scandal

Chloe Lattanzi

Olivia Newton-John’s daughter collapses, reigniting fears about her health.

Olivia Newton-John’s troubled daughter Chloe Lattanzi collapsed in front of a Los Angeles strip club last week after she and a girlfriend were turned away from the sleazy venue for being too drunk.

A dishevelled Chloe, 23, fell to the ground and needed assistance to stand up after she and her friend were refused entry to the gaudy strip club in West Hollywood.

The shock collapse again raises fears about the health of the aspiring pop star, who appeared to have finally won her long battle with eating disorder anorexia nervosa.

This setback will no doubt cause heartache for her mother Olivia, 61, who appears to have found happiness with her second husband, John Easterling, after many personal tragedies.

But Chloe has suffered under her famous mum’s huge shadow, saying she had a lonely childhood while Olivia travelled the world after splitting with Chloe’s dad, US actor Matt Lattanzi.

Friends and family had hoped Chloe was ready to rebuild both her life and a pop career that’s been on hold for the past three years, but it seems Chloe remains dogged by her demons.

A bouncer on the door at the Star Strip Theatre – which had a neon sign promoting “live nude girls girls girls” – recognised Chloe, but he wasn’t about to let the pair in.

“You guys can’t get in here. You’re too drunk,” he told Chloe and her girlfriend, who pleaded to be allowed into the strip club for 10 minutes before reeling off and collapsing nearby.

Wearing ripped black jeans and a revealing top, Chloe had trouble talking and walking before she fell to the ground near the strip club.

“Please let us in,” begged a clearly inebriated Chloe before she was politely asked to move away from the club’s entrance.

She and her friend were later seen entering a bar a short distance up the road where they stayed until the early hours. “She was clearly in high spirits if a little wobbly on her feet,” says one patron.
