Susie’s new heartache

Susie Marony

Friends fear for swim star Susie Maroney after learning the man she’s planning to marry has a criminal past. Jonica Bray reports .

Marathon swimming champion Susie Maroney’s happiness in announcing her engagement two weeks ago swiftly turned to embarrassment when it was revealed her fiance is a criminal.

Susie, 35, showed off her diamond engagement ring a fortnight ago after falling for furniture maker Darren May in a whirlwind eight-week courtship. But her family’s joy was short-lived after the divorced father-of-two’s dark past was revealed.

Darren, 40, was jailed in 2007 for 12 months for stalking and breaching an AVO, while in 2006, he also faced court after being charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated break and enter with intent and breaching an AVO.

It is not the first time Susie’s troubled love life has caused problems within her family, who are still coming to terms with her acrimonious divorce from Rob Daniels less than two years ago.

The banker called the police after a fight with Susie’s mother, Pauline, while moving out of the matrimonial home he and Susie briefly shared in Sydney’s south.

Nic and Katie’s baby race

Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes

Nicole Kidman hires a fertility specialist, while Katie Holmes is seen leaving a clinic after promising husband Tom Cruise a second child. Naomi Toy writes.

WITH RUMOURS mounting that Katie Holmes is feeling the pressure to have a second child with husband Tom Cruise, the 31-year-old actress seemed anything but happy last week as she left the Wilshire Medical Center in LA draped in a loose-fitting coat.

Because Tom, who turns 48 in July, is eager to have another child before he turns 50, it’s suspected that Katie will again have to put her career aside.

“Tom isn’t being selfish, he really wants to give Suri a brother or sister,” a friend of the actor reveals. “He sees how close his two oldest kids, Isabella and Connor, are to each other and he wants to make sure Suri has a sibling close to her age to grow up with.”

For her part, Katie has cleared her schedule for this year, with no movies or major work commitments coming up. But with the star receiving good reviews for her comeback role in The Romantics at the recent Sundance Film Festival, she is now having second thoughts about walking away from acting.

Every day is Valentine’s Day for Guy and Jules Sebastian!

Guy Sebastian

Married for almost two years, Guy Sebastian and wife Jules tell Warren Gibbs they’re more in love than ever.

Strolling barefoot along the white sandy beach, a toned and tanned Guy Sebastian and his wife Jules glow with happiness as they soak up the north Queensland sun in Toogoom, north of Hervey Bay.

Oblivious to the incoming King tide lapping at their feet and the swirling, salt-laden winds, the love-struck couple are in a world of their own, relaxing and unwinding at their beachside getaway they call utopia.

“It’s our paradise,” says Guy, 28, smiling. “It’s a place we both find invigorating, inspiring, peaceful and romantic.”

It’s light years from their fast-paced city lifestyle in Sydney and New York – and they’re even happier than when they started dating as teenagers 10 years ago. “Valentine’s Day is no different from any other day of the year – they’re all very special and we just try to make each one count,” explains Guy.

The Australian Idol winner, who’s two years his wife’s junior, says it’s the “little things” that keep their romance fresh and sexy – from a simple compliment on her dress to a gentle “I love you” the moment she wakes up. “Romance doesn’t have to be all about flowers and boxes of chocolates,” he says.

“There are so many other ways to make your partner feel extra special. I always tell Jules how much I love her and how sexy she looks.

“And Jules loves nothing more than a nice hot bath and a gentle, soapy back massage.

Dannii’s gift to Kylie: A baby for both of us!

Dannii Minogue

With her sister’s dreams of a family dealt a blow by her cancer battle, Dannii Minogue says she’s making sure Kylie won’t miss out on children, reports Matthew Denby.

An emotional Dannii Minogue has opened up about her plans to share her first child with sister Kylie.

While Dannii, 38, is over the moon about her forthcoming baby with partner of 18 months Kris Smith, she is keenly aware of the emotional impact her pregnancy will have on Kylie, 41.

Her older sister has long wanted a child. Kylie had two unsuccessful IVF attempts with her former partner, French actor Olivier Martinez, before she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2005. She then had to abandon her quest for motherhood to undergo life saving chemotherapy.

Kylie reportedly underwent an experimental procedure ahead of her treatment, having slivers of her ovaries surgically removed and preserved for reimplantation at a later date.

But despite finding love with Spanish model Andres Velencoso, 31, her dreams of motherhood remain just that.

So three months pregnant Dannii – who gushes “my boobs are definitely bigger, my tummy’s started to change shape, too” – says she will be sharing every minute of her pregnancy with her sister. Determined Kylie won’t miss out on what life has so far denied her, the former Young Talent Time star is going all out to spread the joy.

“I’m sharing my pregnancy with Kylie,” Dannii last week told UK magazine Glamour.

“My brother is thrilled and my sister … well, it’s a different dynamic between sisters and you feel like you’re sharing the experience, as I’d feel if Kylie had kids first.

“She loves children, just adores them, so we’re sharing it together.” Kylie has embraced Dannii’s offer, telling of her plans to buy her new niece or nephew “all sorts of things in every toy store around the world”.

Kylie – who tweeted “I am so happy to be an auntie again” after hearing Dannii’s news – is overjoyed at the prospect of another Minogue, to join her brother Brendan’s two sons, Charles and James. It’s the perfect outcome for Dannii, who feared her good news might bring up feelings of sadness and regret for her childless sister.

“Dannii knows the idea of having a family is massively important to Kylie, but it’s no secret Kylie’s treatment may have lessened her chances of conceiving and this breaks her heart,” a friend told UK magazine Look.

Red Symon’s secret pain: My brave boy’s battle for life

The media star breaks his silence over the suffering of his teenage son Samuel, who lives with cancer.

Red Symons is best known as television’s Mr Nasty on long-running institution Hey Hey It’s Saturday.

But few viewers knew that while he was making thousands laugh as the caustic judge on Red Faces, the TV legend and his wife, Elly, were fighting every parent’s worst nightmare as their young son Samuel battled an aggressive brain tumour.

READ NEXT: Red Symons’ son has died from an aggressive brain tumour at just 27 years old

Watching survivor Sam walk across the stage as a Year 12 graduate from Melbourne Grammar School recently was a “dream come true” for Red, who dared to hope his son – who is still battling a second brain tumour and has thyroid cancer – would live to finish high school.

Six weeks after Samuel was born, proud new parents Red and Elly moved to a house in the suburbs to raise their family. “Our life was so normal,” Elly tells Australian Story about those years. “We had these two little bouncing healthy baby boys [once second son Raphael came along. They later had Joel]. We could never have imagined in a million years what our life was going to become.”

Their dream home had space for father and son to rough-house in the loungeroom. The family’s home videos show Red in old socks and daggy pyjama pants bouncing around in front of the bassinet and making his infant son cackle.

But in baby Samuel’s room the family could hear the hum of the neighbouring power hub and, ominously, Samuel’s cot was against the common wall between the house and the substation.

By age four, Samuel had developed obvious problems, and the family will never know if the electromagnetic waves caused his string of severe illnesses.

One afternoon his preschool teacher called Elly – Samuel had become listless and was unable to open his eyes.

The family rushed him to hospital in an ambulance, and a biopsy revealed tiny Sam had suffered a massive brain haemorrhage.

Fatty foods not bad for you?

Getty Images

Getty Images

Here’s good news for those of us who are rather partial to meat-heavy barbecues or nice rich cheeses: researchers have found that there is no clear link between saturated fat intake and heart disease.

The findings, which were reached after an analysis of 21 past studies, contradict earlier conclusions about the risks involved with raising so called “bad” cholesterol, a result of consuming saturated fats, Reuters reported.

Health & Wellbeing: Getting to know your fats

American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines suggest adults should get no more than 7 percent of their daily kilojoule intake from fat (which translates as just 16g of meat — not a hearty portion!), but the new study indicates that there is no proven link between saturated fat intake and heart disease.

However, don’t all run for the deli counter just yet. The findings, published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, have been downplayed by a former AHA president.

“No-one is saying that some saturated fat is going to harm you,” said Professor Robert H Eckel, a professor of medicine at the University of Colorado. “People should enjoy their food.”

But, he added, many studies had shown that saturated fat still resulted in a rise in cholesterol and that doctors’ advice on fat intake would not change in light of these findings.

Professor Eckel added that dietary thinking was moving away from concentrating on single nutritional elements towards more wide-ranging “dietary patterns”.

Food safety at home

Getty Images

Getty Images

We’re lucky in Australia to have a clean, safe food supply, but the issue of food safety also extends to our homes. How we cook, handle and store foods are all important things to bear in mind when keeping our food safe. So as we move back into the routine of school and work we have some tips for preparing and storing food to ensure safe eating for your family.

Preparation

  1. Wash hands thoroughly using soap and warm water before preparing food, after going to the bathroom and handling pets.

  2. Use separate cutting boards for raw and cooked ingredients. Always use a separate cutting board if preparing raw meat and wash utensils (such as knives, tongs, etc) with hot soapy water between handling raw and cooked food.

  3. If you’ve made food in advance, thaw in the refrigerator or microwave. This allows fewer bacteria to grow than if the food is left at room temperature.

  1. Cook foods thoroughly and keep hot food above 60°C.

  2. The danger zone for food is between 5°C and 60°C, as this is the temperature range where most food bacteria will grow. It is important to try and keep food temperature out of this range so take plenty of ice if you’re travelling with food that needs to be kept cool and transport it in an esky or cooler bag.

  1. Cool leftovers quickly by putting them in the refrigerator, even if they are still warm. This limits the amount of time the food spends in the temperature danger zone. Try to use refrigerated leftovers within two or three days.

  2. If you still have food left over after your dinner party or celebrations, cover it before refrigeration to ensure there is no cross-contamination through spillage from other dishes.

A passion for pineapple

Getty Images

Pineapple’s background:

Prickly on the outside but sweet and juicy on the inside, the pineapple is a member of the Bromeliaceae family and is known as the “king of fruit” — no doubt a name inspired by the pineapple’s crown shaped top. The pineapple is native to South America but most of the pineapple we enjoy in Australia and New Zealand is grown closer to home.

How can I best choose a pineapple?

When choosing fresh pineapple, look for fruit that is plump, vibrant and yellow in colour and has a tropical aroma. Once ripe, pineapples should be eaten within two or three days. Nutritionally, pineapples are a good source of vitamin C and they also contribute some fibre.

Other ideas for pineapple use:

Pineapple can also be a great ingredient — and not only in fruit salads. Why not try it crushed with a sprig of mint for a cool summer drink or on skewers in a vegetable kebab?

Preparing to eat:

To prepare fresh pineapple you will need a sharp knife and a strong cutting board.

1. Place the pineapple on its side and cut off the top and base.

2. Stand the pineapple up and cut all the skin off from the sides in strips, starting at the top.

3. Using a melon baller or potato peeler, remove any remaining divots.

4. Place the pineapple back on its side and cut into slices.

Apologies go down better from the right

Getty Images

Getty Images

If you have something to say sorry about today, here’s a top tip: approach from the right-hand side and your notes of contrition have a better chance of hitting their mark.

Researchers in Spain have found that when someone is angry their right ear does a better job of listening than their left, the UK’s Daily Telegraph reported.

Are your relationships sabotaging your weight-loss efforts?

Alternative therapy: Can ear acupuncture cure all your ails?

The University of Valencia researchers conducted a series of hearing tests on 30 young men whom they had provoked into a fury.

The men were given a collection of hostile statements to read which were designed to anger them while the scientists took measurements of the participants’ heart rates, blood pressure and testosterone levels.

The team found that once provoked, the participants’ right ears were more susceptible to sound whereas their left ears showed no change.

The scientists observed from these findings that any attempts to calm the men would be more likely to succeed were they to come from the right-hand side.

The research, published in the journal Hormones and Behaviour, concluded that the success of the right-ear approach could be down to the fact that this ear accesses the left brain, which is used to rationalise behaviour and process judgements.

So, if you need to talk someone around today, try talking to them from the right-hand side.

Apps to help women with money

A frightening number of us ladies have no idea what's going on when it comes to managing important things like shares and retirement savings. Here's how the founders of "Flirting with Finances" are helping us, yet again.
Asian woman with iphone Getty Images

ACCORDING to the federal government’s Women Understanding Money report, 95 per cent of women know nothing about any company that they invest in and 25 per cent of women have no savings for retirement.

In response to this lack of basic financial literacy, a friend and I wrote a book, Flirting with Finance (FWF) to teach women the basics of finance using shopping and dating analogies. I’ve also made vlogs, blogs, newsletters and articles in order to help women understand their finances more.

The original FWF provided many website references to help women understand where to find (often free) resources they could use to understand their finances more.

Now I am going one step further, noting useful iPhone apps for finance and noting the websites that are also attached for those who don’t have iPhones.

The first site is called www.toodledo.com and the matching iPhone app is also called Toodledo. In FWF we wrote about setting goals and the necessity of having an action plan with a timeline. With Toodledo you can set goals and put action items on a timeline to a plan. You can synchronise your tasks across a variety of other programs, such as Microsoft Outlook. There are free and paid versions available, with slightly different features depending on your requirements. The free one has a lot of great options.

In FWF we mention a great free budgeting website is www.fido.gov.au. But there is also an iPhone app available called iXpensIt, which can be used to record photographs of your receipts. It helps you to see where your expenses fit into your budget and synchronises with your computer. There is also another app called FYI Mileage, which you can use as a logbook method of claiming trips and it exports directly to iXpenseIt.

For taxation information you can visit the ATO website a d review the tax tables and calculators available at www.ato.gov.au. There is also a useful iPhone app called My Tax where you can work out PAYG tax and superannuation contributions. Once you have your vehicle costs from the FYI Mileage app (above) you can check which methods are best for calculating your car expenses. The My Tax app was designed by a tax accountant.

For information about shares, the book mentions many sites, including www.bigcharts.com for graphing, Yahoo! Finance and other finance sites. There is a fabulous iPhone app called Portfolio Live and it provides amazing graphs you can design yourself, as well as news headlines, portfolio tracking (including cash held in different currencies) all in one place.

I cannot vouch for the long-term accuracy or cost of any of these apps, but all the tests I have run have worked and the prices of the apps were low when I purchased them.

If so, click here to buy our book or visit the iTunes App Store to download the iPhone apps.
