Take a nap — wake up smarter

It might be time to consider taking your pillow to work as researchers have found that a short sleep in the middle of the day can improve your capacity for learning and retaining new facts. Although, good luck explaining that to your boss when they catch you snoozing at your desk.

Researchers in California have found that power napping not only refreshes the mind but actually makes you smarter, the UK’s Daily Mail reported.

The University of California, Berkeley, research team split 39 students into two groups and then set them a series of learning tasks that were designed to test the hippocampus region of the brain, which is used to store facts.

Quiz: What do you know about your memory?

Gallery: Five foods that help you sleep

Midway through the day, half the students took a 90-minute siesta and half didn’t. For the tests taken later that afternoon, the half who had slept were found to perform much better in the later tasks than those who had not.

“Sleep not only rights the wrong of prolonged wakefulness but, at a neuro-cognitive level, it moves you beyond where you were before you took a nap,” said Dr Matthew Walker, the psychologist who led the study.

The researchers suggested that sleep — especially the transitional period between deep sleep and dreaming sleep known as stage 2 non-REM — is needed to clear out the brain’s short-term memory allowing it to take in new facts.

“It’s as though the e-mail inbox in your hippocampus is full and, until you sleep and clear out those fact e-mails, you’re not going to receive any more mail,” Dr Walker said.

“It’s just going to bounce until you sleep and move it into another folder.”

The findings will come as no surprise to those with an interest in history (or the siesta-loving Spanish for that matter) as many great thinkers and leaders are known to have been keen nappers.

British prime ministers Winston Churchill and Margaret Thatcher were both advocates of a midday sleep as were former US presidents Bill Clinton and John F Kennedy as well as physicist Albert Einstein, the Daily Mail reported.

Looks from the Trenery A/W collection

After working her magic at Witchery and Country Road, Sophie Holt, the revamp queen, has turned her hand to design at Trenery — the new offshoot from Country Road.

The label has pieces for both women and men which are on trend with a focus on classic styling. The womenswear range includes a smart-casual range, perfect for office or the school run.

We had a chat with Sophie and picked her brain on some of the most-often asked questions from Women’s Weekly readers.

How can I use accessories to change my look? — Marie, Hobart

The Trenery accessories range has some wonderful classic pieces but there are two key looks we think define the season. The first is belts — especially worn over a long line knit. We’d suggest using a longer belt than normal so you can create a knotted effect rather than the standard buckle fastening.

The second is boots — they’ll make a big statement this winter. Trenery has some great options including the classic leather riding boot, a beautiful suede knee-high flat boot as well as a great suede ankle boot that can be worn with pants or made more modern when worn with a dress.

What items are the must-haves in my work wardrobe? — Jeanette, NSW

A great trench coat — it always looks smart and works well over pants or skirts. The perfect crisp cotton white shirt — it goes effortlessly from work to weekend.

A couple of long-line cardigans — one sleeveless in a charcoal chunky, ribbed wool and the other in a pop of colour like cyclamen in a fine gauge pure merino wool. A pair of classic wool flannel pants — they are timeless, elegant and versatile. And a stylish leather tote bag which will fit all your daily essentials.

What trends will be hot this winter? — Anne, Melbourne

Trenery is more about timeless classics than following the latest trends. We want our customers to be able to build on their wardrobe season after season without feeling dated.

Having said that, this season, we especially like layering textures such as silk and merino wool with vintage-inspired prints, and reinventing classic wardrobe essentials in beautiful fabrics with perfect details for a modern edge.

How can I stay warm without looking like a marshmallow this winter? — Nicole, Newcastle

Cool climate dressing can be quite challenging. We suggest layering fine gauge knits to avoid bulk and investing in a great wool felt pea coat to keep out the chill.

Sophie’s top five tips for working mums

  1. Keep it simple and elegant. Well-made, well-cut separates in great fabrics will take you a long way.

  2. Try to build a low-maintenance wardrobe to keep ironing and dry-cleaning to a minimum.

  3. Make sure you feel comfortable and confident in what you wear. If you’re not, it will show.

  4. Don’t try too hard. Power dressing is a thing of the past.

  5. Use accessories to change your look from day to day and day to night.

An ego epidemic?

A study from the University of San Diego suggests that narcissism is on the increase. Symptoms that define the condition include an inflated sense of one’s own importance, a sense of entitlement (eg: to fame, good looks, or a particular job), vanity, overconfidence, materialism, an inability to empathise with others, and difficulty accepting criticism.

The study looked at over 35,000 people and found that six percent of them had experienced a clinically diagnosed narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Interestingly, the condition was three times more likely to occur in younger, university-aged women.

The researchers attribute this to a wide variety of cultural influences, such as growing up with the “girl power” trend started by the Spice Girls in the mid-’90s; the increase in consumerism and available credit; the “dumbing down” of the education system where children are constantly given the message that they are special when they are, in fact, average; celebrity worship; the boom in plastic surgery; the proliferation of networking sites like Facebook; and the rise of reality TV, where ordinary people can achieve extraordinary fame for doing very little.

Sandra Bullock’s tragedy: I can’t be a mum

Sandra Bullock

Forced to give up on IVF, the star has been robbed of her last chance to become a biological mum. Clare Rigden reports.

Sandra Bullock always thought she was “too selfish” to be a mother. Then, at 39, she fell in love with her now husband, Jesse James, and her biological clock started ticking.

“I had shut that off, then I met Jesse and I turned on again,” she has said. Becoming stepmother to the Monster Garage host’s three children from two previous marriages — Chandler, 15, Jesse Jnr, 12, and Sunny, 6 — only intensified her desire to fall pregnant.

“I have children, amazing children. My love and my want for their future and their happiness, for their homework to be done and for them to know how smart and beautiful they are, is no less than if I’d had a child of my own,” says Sandra.

Struggling to fall pregnant naturally, 45-year-old Sandra turned to fertility drug Clomid and IVF treatments. She kept her battle secret but couldn’t conceal her frustration last year, when a reporter asked if she was going to have a baby with Jesse. “What if I couldn’t have kids? Do you know what that would make me feel like?”

Now, a custody dispute with Jesse’s second wife, porn star Janine Lindemulder, over their daughter Sunny, has forced Sandra to go public with her fertility problems.

Sandra told presiding judges that she has ceased her IVF treatments due to family “instability”, saying that “bringing another child into the world at this time would not be in Sunny’s best interests”.

Kirstie Alley’s fat farm freak out

Kirsty Alley

The star’s bizarre antics at a health spa have some worried that she’s lost her grip on reality. Jackie Brygel reports.

With her eating out of control again, Kirstie Alley checked into a ritzy California fat farm. But according to fellow guests, the 90kg-plus actress made a mockery of the facility’s strict rules on dieting and exercise.

With her new reality TV show Kirstie Alley’s Big Life underway, the 59-year-old actress is desperate to make good on her promise to lose weight. But sources at the exclusive Cal-a-Vie health spa say she refused to work up a sweat, ordered desserts in her room and even flirted with kitchen staff in a seemingly desperate bid to satisfy her hunger.

The former Cheers star, who famously shed 34kg on the Jenny Craig plan, only to put it all back on — and more — didn’t get off to the best start at the $9000-a-week spa. When she discovered she couldn’t squeeze into the spa’s workout gear, she was in no mood to exercise.

“Kirstie was the heaviest of the 21 women there,” a spa insider told the US magazine National Enquirer.

“The facility provides their guests with grey sweatpants, grey shorts, grey T-shirts and other workout gear, but poor Kirstie was too big for the complimentary clothes and stuck out like a sore thumb as she lumbered around in black sweats and oversized shirts.”

While guests are expected to adhere to a daily diet of 5000kJ, it seems Kirstie had other ideas. She did everything from trying to order desserts from the privacy of her room, to flirting with the kitchen staff in an attempt to obtain larger meal portions.

“When fish tacos were served for lunch one day, Kirstie complained she didn’t like the way the food was cooked. But she ate it and then went back to ask for more,” says the source.

“Another time, she flirted with the chef because she wanted two servings of lasagne. He just laughed and said no.

“Kirstie was caught whispering to the chef about the desserts she had ordered to her room, while other guests looked on in horror.”

New dad Steven Bradbury: I’m the world’s luckiest man… again

Steven Bradbury

Luck continues for the first Aussie to win Winter Olympic gold — when every other finalist fell over — as he fathers twins. Rose Fydler reports.

Spiky-haired speed skater Steven Bradbury is famous for being in the right place at exactly the right time. But when his wife Amanda went into early labour with twins while the Winter Olympic hero was in Canada, he wondered if his luck had finally deserted him.

“It was pretty upsetting, listening to Amanda on the phone back in Brisbane, in pain and with contractions less than two minutes apart. I was so worried about her, about the babies being too premature at eight weeks early, and of course missing out on the births,” says Steve, recalling his frantic dash home from Vancouver, where he had been mentoring the Australian speed skating team in the lead up to the Games.

“That whole trip almost backfired — but just when I was preparing for the worst, the contractions suddenly came to a halt. It was the best kind of miracle!” beams the proud new dad as he introduces son Flyn Steven and daughter Eryn Leigh, precious little bundles who determinedly held on for their official due date of December 17, 2009.

“Born 6lb 4oz [2.8kg], Flyn was so much bigger than his sister, who was 4lb 13oz [2.2kg] — but I think Eryn could already be the boss,” says Amanda, who has already lost the 11.5kg she gained in pregnancy. “Flyn is the most laid-back and easygoing little guy — a mini Steve.”

The twins were born via caesarean, then spent 72 hours in the special needs nursery with low blood sugar and feeding problems, but nothing could shake the couple’s elation.

“If I could have carried the babies for Amanda, I would have,” says Steve, 36, who presented his wife with diamond encrusted E and F pendants in the moments after the birth.

“Carrying two babies for a whole nine months is a hard slog — as the man you feel useless, so we were both very happy to see them. I’m doing my bit now that they’re on the outside!”

Adriana Xenides: My dog saved my life

Adriana Xenides

Pictures: Yianni Aspradakis.

Alone and in terrible pain, the former game show host has suffered five heart attacks. Adriana tells Glen Williams how her faithful companion came to the rescue.

For years, as the undisputed queen of quiz show Wheel Of Fortune, Adriana Xenides turned as many heads as she did letters. But now, she says, her life is a daily battle of pain and heartache.

Indeed, the former TV beauty reveals she is lucky to be alive after suffering five heart attacks in the past two years.

And her only consolation is her ever-present best friend, Red, a sprightly whippet she credits with rescuing her after a collapse.

“Red saved my life,” she tells Woman’s Day. “I collapsed at home recently. The pain associated with my condition was so excruciating I passed out.

“When I woke up, it was dark, so some time had elapsed. I could see two gold eyes watching me and in my mouth was a wet dish cloth. I traced the marks across the floor and I couldn’t believe what Red had done. She’d grabbed the dish cloth, dunked it in her water bowl, then come and put it in my mouth so I wouldn’t be dehydrated. It’s just amazing. I’m only here because of her.”

Adriana says her health woes began with a mysterious gastro-intestinal disorder that saw her abdomen repeatedly swell to the size of that of a heavily pregnant woman. And she says she is now in constant pain following an operation to totally remove her large intestine — surgery which left her on life support and not expected to make it.

Meet Bindi Irwin’s boyfriend

Bindi Irwin

The Aussie sweetheart shares a special bond with a young man from the other side of the world, discovers Lucy Chesterton.

At just 11, Bindi Irwin is fast becoming a little lady, and she has a new number one fan to prove it ? her boyfriend!

Australia’s most famous child star has developed a close bond with her friend and fellow member of Hollywood royalty, Jacob Wertheimer ? the grandson of boxing legend Muhammad Ali.

As a long-time family friend happily tells Woman’s Day, Bindi is taking her first steps into the world of boys and dating.

“During the last year Bindi has started calling Jacob her boyfriend,” the friend reveals. “They’ve known each other for years. They’ve been writing to each other since they were young.

“I’ve seen them on the red carpet and even [Bindi’s mum] Terri calls Jacob Bindi’s boyfriend.”

But the friend says there’s no risk the relationship between Steve Irwin’s little girl ? who is currently pursuing a movie career and starring in the fourth instalment of US film series Free Willy ? and Jacob will develop too quickly: the two live in separate countries, only reuniting for events in Australia or the US.

It’s understood the two, who are officially “just friends” according to an Australia Zoo spokesperson, first cemented their friendship at G’Day USA week in America in 2008. They were seen together on the red carpet around the same time as Bindi ditched her khaki Zoo uniform in favour of flattering sandals and pastel dresses.

I Took My Cheating Husband’s Hair

My husband Richard and I had been married for seven years and I thought we were reasonably happy. I won’t say we hadn’t experienced our fair share of rocky patches but then who doesn’t?

I was first attracted to Richard because of his dark good looks, his charisma and his silver tongue. He had slick black hair and fierce blue eyes, a perfect jaw line and broad shoulders.

His real talent though was that he made me feel beautiful and downright sexy; in a room full of stunning women he could make me feel as though I was the most desirable woman on earth. I was painfully aware from day one that these were qualities not completely lost on other women.

Wherever we would go I would see the looks. Ladies not only looking Richard up and down but sizing me up as well. I could almost hear them thinking ‘What is SHE doing with HIM?’

I’m not classically attractive but I have some good attributes I believe. I’m not tall but I’m curvy in the right places. I’m not a blonde but I have a natural curl to my auburn hair. I don’t have blue eyes but Richard has always told me that my brown eyes are very soulful.

I don’t hate myself but like most other women – in fact most other people – there are days when I really would love the power to make my derriere smaller or add a foot or two to my height.

I’m keenly aware that there are some gorgeous women out there and that some of those gorgeous women have occasionally caught my husband’s eye. Call me naive but I honestly thought that this was as far as it ever went.

I was just on my way out when I heard the familiar ring tone – the 1812 overture, what does that tell you? I found the mobile still on the coffee table, it was Richard calling from the office. He asked if I could drop the phone off to him on my way to work. It wasn’t a problem.

I hung up and that’s when that little voice spoke to me. The one that says, “Go on…you know you want to”. I hesitated only momentarily. I told myself that I trusted Richard but I had to see.

I opened his message inbox and scrolled down. I was almost at the end and starting feel very tacky when my eyes locked onto the second last message. It was titled ‘Tonight…can’t wait!’ The sender was ‘Annie’.

My head spun and my vision blurred for a moment. I opened the message. The words almost didn’t make sense, I had to re-read them several times before I could actually comprehend what was going on. Something about meeting that night for drinks and then “well…we’ll see”.

I felt nauseated. It was so brazen. I checked the top of the message, it was dated two weeks earlier. My mind raced; two weeks, two weeks! Yes, there was a dinner, a work dinner. Richard had said – oh God – Richard had said that partners weren’t allowed. I thought it was strange but I thought we trusted each other.

Richard is an engineer so long hours are par for the course. We even used to joke about him ‘working late’, as though the idea of him cheating was so very ludicrous that we could make cliched jokes about it.

I wanted to smash his stupid phone against the wall but suddenly an eerie calm washed over me. I can’t explain it.

I drove to his building and delivered his phone as promised. I was just about to turn and head for the elevator when he called out, “I’ll be uh..you know…’working late’ tonight again honey” and then he laughed a very dry laugh.

I didn’t acknowledge him. I veritably shook with rage as I headed for my car. I numbly made it through my day and I literally crashed into the lounge as soon as I got home.

Later, I opened a bottle of red and chewed my way through three quarters whilst barely watching some TV show about vampires when it struck me. Richard used to boast about his ‘glorious head of hair’. He would proudly tell me that all of his family were gifted with the ‘hair of the Gods’ and that he felt really sad for all the ‘baldies’ out there.

I thought it was all tongue in cheek but now that I know what I know I actually think he was serious. He used to slick his black locks back most days with Bryl Cream. He would make it this big part of his morning routine and he would barely grunt dare I talk to him during this daily coiffing ritual.

I headed for his vanity drawer and pulled out his beloved hair product. It all came to me in a flash of inspiration – oh how glorious. I scooped out the hair cream into the toilet and flushed it away forever. I then pulled out some of my hair removal cream from my drawer and replaced every ounce of it.

I slept barely a wink that night and when Richard crept in after one a.m. I actually smiled. At six fifty (after three goes at the snooze button), I tried not to look as my cheating husband smoothed hair removal cream into the ‘hair of the Gods’.

We sat down to eat breakfast and I asked a few coy questions about how his night had been. He looked me straight in the eyes and told me how hard he’d been working!

That’s when it happened. He started scratching at first. ‘What’s wrong sweetheart?’ I enquired sweetly. ‘I’m not sure’ he said distractedly as he scratched more anxiously now. ‘My scalp is itchy…burning’ he spat before running to the bathroom. I followed.

‘Quick wash your head’ I cried and Richard threw his head under the shower and blasted himself with hot water by accident, screaming all the while. I stifled a snigger. He then ran his fingers all through his painful locks (I have to say that the hair removal cream I use is not the polite formula that eases hair off, it’s the industrial strength stuff).

As he inspected his hair and scalp, great wads of hair came out in his fingers. I’ll never forget the look on that man’s face as his pride and joy fell to pieces in the bathroom mirror.

We have naturally divorced since I’m sure ‘Annie’ was none too amused now that Richard had joined the ‘baldies’ that he’d once pitied.

Whenever I have a bad day I think about the hair cream incident and I smile a wicked little smile. Cheating is a horrid bitter thing but revenge is so sweet.
