Volcanic ash does wonders for hair!

Volcanic ash does wonders for hair!

While the recent volcanic eruption in Iceland has caused a stir for thousands of travellers, the volcanic ash is a beauty godsend for stars like Angelina Jolie, Uma Thurman, Nicole Kidman, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kate Hudson.

The mineral-rich volcanic ash is one of the key ingredients in Kate Hudson’s range of hairstyling products, which aims to give dull and lifeless hair a serious lift.

The golden globe winning actress has teamed up celebrity hairstylist David Babaii and the pair have created David Babaii for WildAid, an all-natural hairstyling range which embraces nature and is free from all animal testing.

Four of the products in the range, including the Amplifying Shampoo, Amplifying Conditioner, Volcanic Ash Sculpting Clay and Volcanic Ash Root Amplifier, all take advantage of the natural hair enhancing ingredient, volcanic ash.

The ash’s mixture of glass, sand and rock particles helps to pump up flat, limp or fine hair leaving it with a natural lift.

The other natural and renewable ingredients you will find in the volumising products within the range include jojoba oil and panthenol, which add thickness and lift. Natural conditioning ingredients blue algae, mango and kiwi fruit to protect the hair and provide a healthy shine are also in the products.

The David Babaii for WildAid range is available from GNC, Priceline, Price Attack, selected Terry White Chemists, Go Vita, Healthy Life as well as selected hair salons and beauty outlets.

Drug-addicted Cameron Douglas’ downfall

Cameron Douglas with his father, actor Michael Douglas

Michael Douglas’ drug troubled son Cameron has hit rock bottom after he was sentenced to five years’ jail for dealing cocaine and methamphetamine.

In front of his famous actor father and a packed courtroom in New York, Cameron admitted his drug-infused downfall had ruined his life.

“I made a lot of mistakes … I believe your honour that things will be different this time because I feel I have the full support of my family and my parents,” the New York Post reported him as saying.

Upon being sentenced the 31-year-old admitted this was the first time he had been sober since his drug problem began at 13.

“First, I’d like to apologise to my family … for my behaviour … I’d like to ask you for the opportunity to be a productive family member and a good role model,” he said.

The on-again off-again actor and DJ has a long history with drug addiction. In 2007 he was charged for possession of a controlled substance after police officers found a syringe containing liquid cocaine in a car he was in.

In July 2009, he was caught high on drugs in a hotel apartment which was being rented for him by his father.

Cameron was busted for his involvement in a deal to move and sell a half-pound of crystal meth worth US$18,000 ($19,300) from California to New York.

He was placed under house arrest at his mother’s apartment, but his strong addiction continued. At one point he pleaded with his girlfriend to smuggle him heroin, which she attempted by hiding it inside an electric toothbrush, but was caught.

He will also have to pay a fine of US$25,000 ($27,000), serve 450 hours of community service when released and undergo weekly counselling sessions with family members present.

Despite his downfall the 31-year-old continues to have the support of his family with his father, step-mum actress Catherine Zeta-Jones and his 93-year-old famed grandfather actor Kirk Douglas writing letters on Cameron’s behalf.

Gwyneth: My life as a working mum

Gwyneth Paltrow has spent the past few years juggling motherhood – she has two children Apple, 5, and Moses, 3, with her husband of six years, Coldplay singer Chris Martin – and her career. Gwyneth is steadily re-establishing herself as one of Hollywood’s top actresses.

In recent years, the 37-year-old has had a leading role in The Good Night — her brother Jack Paltrow’s movie-directing debut — and continues with a stint as a superhero’s girlfriend in Iron Man. Gwyneth has also filmed the romantic drama Two Lovers in New York, which allowed her to make it home at night to read her children their bedtime story.

The Oscar-winning star of Shakespeare In Love tells why she’s in love with acting again, and how she juggles motherhood and movies.

What kind of movies do you watch yourself? Do you go to the movies often?

Yes, I like to go to the cinema. Sometimes we go a lot, and sometimes not. I like to see smaller, more art films.

You’ve lived in London for several years. What do you like about it?

I feel really lucky, because we get to go back and forth. We live in London and we live in New York. I don’t feel like I have to give either city up. They are both such amazing cities, different in a lot of ways, but also similar in a lot of ways. Culturally there is so much going on.

Do you like making movies in England?

Yes, I do. I’ve been making movies there since I was 22. I’ve done something like 10 projects. They approach it in a very artful way. Everybody is very important. It’s always a very good feeling on set in England. The movies I have done there have been art-house movies. I have never done a big-budget movie. So I don’t know if there’s a big difference to America.

Do you want to raise your children differently from the way you were raised?

No. My parents raised me with a lot of love and support. I want to do the same.

Do you sometimes use parental authority with your children?

Yes, of course. Children need boundaries, they don’t feel safe. If the child feels it’s in control, it acts out. Because on a very deep level, it knows it depends on the parent and can’t make its own decisions, or it can’t survive if it makes its own decisions. As a parent, you can still respect the essence of your child. You respect who they are, but they need boundaries.

Are there certain things you can’t do anymore because of your children?

Nothing I can think of. I have never been a skydiver. It’s not like I had to stop. I don’t think about what I can’t do. I think about what I can do.

How was it being raised both Jewish and Christian?

It’s funny because my parents married in 1969. And it was very contentious. Because my mother was from this very waspy family in Philadelphia, and my father [movie director Bruce Paltrow, who died in 2002] was from New York. And he came from this dynasty of rabbis in Poland. Their wedding was very uncomfortable to both sides. The Jews didn’t want him to marry a Christian, and the Christians didn’t want her to marry a Jew. We grew up with both. It was a really nice way to grow up. It was really funny. You would go to Easter to my grandmother’s house and everybody is sitting at the table, going, “What do you think of what the president said?” Then you go over to Passover, and everybody is like, “What are you saying?” And everybody is yelling and eating food from each other’s plates, and very alive. It was such a nice way to grow up. We had more holidays. And there are two different lifestyles and cultures.

What effect does being half-Jewish have on how you’re raising your children? Do they get a religious upbringing?

I don’t believe in religion. I believe in spirituality. Religion is the cause of all the problems in the world. I don’t believe in organised religion at all. It’s what separates people. One religion just represents fragments, it causes war. More people have died because of religious conflict than any other reason.

What would be your solution for this?

Everybody needs to change their consciousness and realise we are all one and let go of the ego that’s involved. That’s the only way to solve it.

Be styled with Carson Kressley

Looks from the Trenery A/W collection

The Westfield Be Styled Tour with Carson Kressley will work with real Australian shoppers – providing inspiration for women to dress up, experiment with fresh new looks and embrace the latest autumn winter styles.

Kicking off his tour in Sydney on Thursday April 22 at Westfield Parramatta and Miranda Carson Kressley will travel to QLD, WA, SA, VIC and the ACT until Sunday May 2, inviting the Australian public to delve into his dress up box of the latest autumn and winter fashions from Australia’s leading fashion destination.

How can I go from day to night (almost) effortlessly?

The best way to do this is with accessories. Changing out bag, belts or shoes on a simple black or navy dress can take it from the office to dinner or cocktails very easily. For example, a pencil skirt in black and a white ruffled blouse with simple jewellery and a low heel would be fine for the office. But take the same look and add a sequined cardigan, a statement necklace and perhaps a shoe in a deep rich jewel tone and you are ready for a night on the town. For guys it can be as simple as taking off the suit pants and replacing them with dark wash jeans.

Then top it off with the same dress shirt and jacket minus the tie and you are ready to go out and will still look cool.

See more style in the AWW Glamour Roll What are some wardrobe staples that are timeless?

It really depends on the person and their lifestyle. But for most women the list would include: classic jewellery, cardigans, great jeans, closed toe pumps, a great white blouse, the pencil skirt, the little black dress, the boyfriend blazer, a great watch, aviator style sunglasses for the ladies. For guys, a great pair of jeans, oxford shirts, wingtips, a jack Purcell style sneaker, driving mocs, the blue blazer, and a great suit round out the list.

What do you think is the worst fashion choice a woman can make?

I think when things are well tailored and work with a woman’s body type almost any clothes will look great, even if they are not up to the moment styles. Wearing something that is ill fitting, the wrong shape for one’s body or the wrong colour for your skin tone won’t look good no matter how expensive, chic or well designed the actual piece of clothing is.

How can women use fashion/dressing to stay looking modern?

I think it’s about updating the wardrobe seasonally. Taking stock of new, trendy items and deciding which trends will work for you. Embracing the ones that are flattering to you and make sense for your lifestyle and then mixing those trend pieces in with what you already have.

The shoe booty for fall is a perfect example. While it is fresh and new, it can easily be added to jeans and a blouse that you already have for a very fun, new look!

Stay on trend this Autumn/Winter at Westfield

How do you suggest a woman dress to feel more confident?

We all have those pieces in our closets that when we put them on we feel amazing and confident. It could be the way the fabric feels against the skin, it could be the silhouette of a powerful suit, or a colour that makes us feel vibrant. Take a cue from those items and incorporate them into more of your looks and always be on the hunt for those types of things when you hit the stores. By doing so, you will build a wardrobe, and develop a personal style, that will have you feeling great every time you get dressed.

What do you think will be the biggest trends of A/W?

  • Leather and suede,

  • The booty (the shoe, not the butt!)

  • Colour! Rich jewel tones especially.

  • Statement jewellery (bold necklaces in particular)

  • Cardigans of every shape and size

  • Feminine details mixed with tougher elements like studs

  • Denim in every wash imaginable

**Who is your style icon? Why?

** Oh this one changes for me all the time. I guess for me personally, Cary Grant. I happen to love old film and clothes of that era so he is the perfect embodiment of that. He just always looks impeccably pulled together and tailored. As far as a contemporary style icon I would have to say the Italian heir, Lako Elkmann. He wears the most beautiful things and can mix elements so effortlessly. He is truly dashing and ultimately cool.

Go (quietly) to the gym

A work-out shouldn’t mean that you have to compromise your hearing.

Popping in your iPod earphones when you hit the treadmill may be automatic but a study published in the International Journal of Audiology shows that we are much more likely to turn the volume up to unsafe levels while we are at the gym, compared with taking a walk or a run outside in the fresh air, presumably to block out background noise.

Work out: music to get you going in the gym

Top tips: Women’s Weekly editor Helen McCabe gives her top health tips

“Get better quality earphones, those that ‘seal’ the ear canal like an earplug, and so reduce background noise,” lead researcher Dr Bill Hodgetts suggeted.
