Beat the yeast

Thrush is a vaginal infection caused by an excess of candida albicans, a fungal yeast which normally inhabits the intestines. Symptoms include intense burning, itching, and a discharge.

Anything which disturbs the normal balance of “good” bacteria in the gut can trigger it, including stress, antibiotics, spermicides, synthetic oestrogens, such as those in the contraceptive pill, and hormonal changes. Try these drug-free solutions to get rid of this annoying condition.

Send sugar to the sin bin

A diet rich in sugar and refined carbohydrates — eg: white pasta, bread and rice — can make you more susceptible to thrush because yeast feeds on sugar in the body.

Forgo fungi

It stands to reason that if you eat fungal foods like mushrooms, pickles, wine, and blue cheese, that you will encourage the growth of candida in your body. You also need to avoid foods that have invisible fungi in them, like nuts and dried fruit. Eat yeast-free rye or wholegrain bread, oats and quinoa, and avoid fermented foods, such as soy, vinegar, and malt.

Pucker up

Herbal bitters encourage digestive secretions, which may help to restore balance to gut microflora. Take one teaspoonful in a small glass of warm water before each meal.

Pop probiotics

Reach for yoghurt with live active cultures or a probiotic supplement to help repopulate your system with healthy bacteria and boost your immune system.

One group of women with recurrent thrush reported a dramatic 300 percent decrease in infections when they ate yoghurt containing Lactobacillus acidophilus for six months. Probiotic pessaries can be helpful, as increasing the number of healthy bacteria in and around the vagina seems to keep thrush at bay.

Pick a herb

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis) contains the alkaloid berberine, which inhibits the growth of Candida. Olive leaf (Olea europaea) provides oleuropein, a bitter phytochemical which attacks fungi and prevents its replication. Pau d’arco (Tabebuia avellanedae) contains antifungal and antimicrobial compounds called napthaquinones.

Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea) helps stimulate production of white blood cells to attack the candida yeast. Grapefruit seed extract is another helpful over-the-counter remedy.

A naturopath can give you a professional-strength preparation of these herbs — visit the Australian Traditional Medicine Society at www.atms.com.au to find a practitioner.

Try homoeopathy

Borax and kreosotum are said to be effective for vaginal itching and discharge with a foul odour. However, it is important to get individualised treatment from a qualified homoeopath rather than to self-medicate; to find one near you, visit www.homeopathyoz.org.

Swim in cinnamon

This spice has strong antifungal properties. Add six broken sticks to four cups of boiling water and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat, cover and allow it to brew for one hour. Strain and use the lukewarm liquid in a sitz bath to ease irritation and soreness.

No cinnamon handy? Add up to 20 drops of antiseptic, antifungal, and antimicrobial neem or tea tree oil to four cups of water and use that instead.

Jen Aniston’s body battle with Brooklyn Decker

Jen's body battle with Brooklyn

The set of Adam Sandler’s new movie Just Go with It has turned into a battle of the bodies between Jennifer Aniston and swimwear model Brooklyn Decker.

According to the UK’s Daily Mail, Jen hasn’t taken lightly to the 23-year-old model, who is half Jen’s age, being on set. In fact the usually body-confident actress has made an effort to cover herself up on location in Hawaii while Sports Illustrated model Brooklyn basks in the sun.

Reports were also circling that Jen was feeling so self conscious about being compared to the model, who is married to tennis star Andy Roddick, that she flew her personal trainer to the Hawaii set. However, Jen’s representatives have denied the claims.

“Jennifer has a trainer she works with all year round and has not specifically flown her in to Hawaii after seeing Brooklyn Decker. That’s just plain silly,” her rep told the Daily Mail.

It has also been reported that the former Friends actress undertook the new, baby food cleanse diet, which was developed by personal trainer Tracy Anderson in preparation for the role.

Cooking for a crowd

Question: My family is coming over for a hearty casserole. There will be 12 of us; can I simply triple my famous recipe, which normally serves four?

This is one of our most commonly asked questions, and there isn’t a straight yes or no answer. Most households don’t have large pots and pans, so large quantities of casseroles and the like tends to get pushed into the pan you’d usually use for making one quantity.

The flavours should be fine to triple, just make sure the pot will accommodate all your vegetables.

Greg Norman’s ex-wives: He betrayed both of us

Greg Norman's ex-wives: He betrayed both of us

Greg Norman may be in love – again – but his ex-wives are fuming that he’s flaunting his relationship with a woman who’s been much more than a long-term friend. Dylan Howard has the exclusive inside story.

It was the telephone call that exposed Greg Norman’s secret double life.

The year was 1995 – 14 years into the Aussie golf great’s marriage to first wife Laura Andrassy – and Greg was sitting in his multi-million dollar waterfront Florida mansion, chatting to his mistress.

It was supposed to be a clandestine conversation with the woman he’d first met at a golf tournament two years earlier – an event at which Laura was also present. But his wife, a former flight attendant, intercepted the phone call to their palatial home.

The mistress’s name? Kirsten Kutner – the same woman who was recently revealed as the Great White Shark’s latest love interest.

With the ink barely dry on his divorce from his second wife, tennis star Chris Evert, 55-year-old Greg defended his relationship with 41-year-old Kirsten, saying, “In life, we all go through a learning curve, and my life is no exception. I am now in a very good place with Kirsten.”

But for Laura, hearing Kirsten’s name again sent shivers down her spine.

And while Laura’s silence has been allegedly secured as part of a strict confidentially agreement in her $120 million settlement, she admits news of Greg’s relationship has reopened “painful” wounds.

“It’s difficult for my children …” Laura tells Woman’s Day. “They’ve been through enough, and I really want to keep them from dealing with anything to do with their father.

“There is a lot to the story,” she adds. “It does have something to do with me, but it doesn’t have anything to do with me anymore – and I’ve moved on.”

According to friends, Greg and Laura’s marriage woes began when she overheard him organising an illicit rendezvous with Kirsten in 1995.

By that stage, an insider says, Greg and Kirsten, then in her twenties, had been seeing each other for at least two years.

“His cover was blown when Laura picked up the phone and overhead them having a conversation about meeting up,” a source close to the former couple says.

“Laura confronted Greg about it and he agreed to break off his relationship with Kirsten to save his marriage because, as a parent, he believed it was the right thing to do.”

For years, the couple worked to repair the damage Greg’s affair had done. But in May 2006, they announced they would divorce.

Miracle pram baby turns one!

Miracle pram baby turns one!

Millions viewed the chilling moment when Saurish Verma’s pram rolled under a train. Six months on, Jill Fraser helps celebrate his first birthday.

Birthday boy Saurish Verma wobbles around the room excitedly, taking tentative steps towards his pile of new toys and looking up at the brightly coloured balloons in amazement.

For his mum Shweta and dad Ankush, this first birthday holds special significance. It’s a milestone Saurish might never have reached.

Last October, Saurish’s pram rolled down the platform of Melbourne’s Ashburton railway station and under a moving train.

Caught on video, millions of YouTube and TV viewers watched Shweta run after the pram, screaming as she thought her baby had been killed.

Wedged in the undercarriage of the train, Saurish’s pram was pulled along the tracks for 30 metres before 18-year-old schoolboy Aaron Dryden risked his own life by jumping on to the tracks to assist Saurish.

Miraculously, six-month-old Saurish was unscathed, strapped tightly into his pram and suffering just a few bruises.

Watch the news reports from October last year, as people set out to find unsung hero Aaron Dryden.

But Saurish’s birthday isn’t about “what ifs”. It’s about the family celebrating their boy.

“It is his first party, with just close friends and family,” says Shweta, who also invited Woman’s Day along for the special event. “There is much love and everyone is giving great thanks to God for his life.”

Saurish certainly enjoys the occasion too.

“He slept soundly before his guests arrived and his tummy is full, so he is a contented little boy,” Shweta smiles fondly. “He has played with his new toys and really lapped up all the attention.”

Aaron, who has kept in touch with the family since he rescued Saurish, was guest of honour at the party. Known as “Uncle Aaron”, the Year 12 student believes he will always be part of Saurish’s life.

Our bridesmaid was a kangaroo!

Our bridesmaid was a kangaroo!

When Gilly Richardson and John Hughes took the big leap into marriage, it was but a simple hop for the couple’s bridesmaid – their pet kangaroo, Zoe.

Gilly and John, who tied the knot on their farm in Victoria’s rural Deans Marsh earlier this year, adopted Zoe a year ago after finding her on a track near her dead mum.

When they took the tiny joey home to care for her, they had no idea she would become such an integral member of the family. Or that she’d serve as a bridesmaid at their wedding along with their daughters Brooke, 5, and Holly, 4.

“She really is our third child, so it didn’t even occur to us that it might seem bizarre to have her as a bridesmaid,” says Gilly.

“We had the wedding at home, so she was free to join in as much or as little as she liked. But she must have enjoyed herself as she even posed for pictures with us. Everyone thought it was hilarious.

“Luckily I didn’t mind being upstaged by my three gorgeous bridesmaids – even if one of them was a kangaroo!”

Bridesmaid duties aside, Zoe is like a sister to Brooke and Holly.

“Our eldest used to feed her a lot and they bonded like any siblings would,” Gilly says.

“If Brooke and Holly played in the sandpit, Zoe would join them, sit by their side and eat grass.”

My MasterChef wedding

My MasterChef wedding

MasterChef’s Jonathan Daddia is prepared for anything in the kitchen. And when it comes to romance, the aspiring chef is equally well organised.

In between shooting scenes for the TV cooking competition, Jonathan crammed in a walk down the aisle that had been thrown into doubt by his success in the kitchen … and a honeymoon!

“At the end of the first week of top 50 we had a weekend off, so I snuck away and got married,” says Jonathan, 33, of his wedding to Mandy, 28. “But I was rushed off for filming the next day.

“Then when I made it through to the top 24, it looked like we’d lose our honeymoon. Luckily, we had another quick break and – following a lot of pleading with travel agents and resort owners – I managed to shift our honeymoon to the Maldives into that tiny gap!”

Jonathan originally won Mandy’s heart with a six-course dinner including champagne and oysters, tuna sashimi, beef fillet with herb crust, and créme brûlée with twisted almond biscuits.

Prince William’s Kate the next Diana

Prince William's Kate the next Diana

As Prince William and Kate Middleton move closer to announcing their engagement, she is being groomed to inherit Diana’s title as the people’s princess. John Bell reports.

Has Prince William finally popped the question? It seemed that way on April 29, when royal watchers were buzzing that William’s girlfriend of more than six years, Kate Middleton, had been spotted wearing a huge engagement ring at a hair salon in London.

Although the ring was nowhere in sight when she stepped out two days later, the belief among Palace insiders is that an engagement is imminent, perhaps as early as June, to coincide with William’s 28th birthday. And as the date quickly approaches, Buckingham Palace is working hard behind the scenes to mould Kate into the people’s princess – just like William’s late mother, Diana.

“Kate has studied Diana’s life and she is a great admirer of all the tireless work she did for charity,” says Nicholas Davies, the author of more than 10 books on the royals.

So, in order to carry on Diana’s legacy – which involved working with more than 100 charities, including ones benefiting AIDS sufferers, land-mine victims and sick children – Kate is turning her focus on helping the less fortunate too.

Already a big supporter of Starlight Children’s Foundation, dedicated to lifting the spirits of ill children, “Kate has made it very clear to Palace officials that she’s willing to take on more charity work”, says one insider.

Kate, 28, won accolades this past Christmas when she persuaded Wills’ stepmum, the Duchess of Cornwall, to invite Starlight wish children to help decorate the tree in their home, Clarence House.

Fears for skinny Catherine

Fears for skinny Catherine

It should have been Catherine Zeta-Jones’ moment of glory. But at a New York press luncheon last week to celebrate her Tony Awards nomination for her role in hit musical A Little Night Music, the actress was the centre of attention for all the wrong reasons.

The voluptuous star of old was nowhere to be seen, and Catherine’s uncharacteristically gaunt face and scarily skinny frame had colleagues worried that her relentless work schedule and the emotional trauma of recent months are threatening to overwhelm her.

Catherine is being heavily criticised for her new figure.

The New York Daily News last week slammed the 40-year-old star for her “knobby knees and thin, shapeless calves”.

“Her legs were so thin, everyone was staring,” said one observer. “She didn’t look much like the Catherine we all remember.”

As well as the emotional stress of seeing her husband Michael Douglas’s son Cameron jailed for drug offences, Catherine is nearing the end of an exhausting six-month stint singing and dancing on Broadway eight times a week.

The star’s figure has long been the subject of controversy. Her weight plunged noticeably in 2007, forcing her to deny suggestions she may be anorexic.
