Is a *Friends* onscreen reunion in the works?

Getty

Will ’90s sitcom Friends follow in the footsteps of the Sex and the City movies and be the next television series to hit the big screen?

If actress Jennifer Aniston has her way an on-screen Friends reunion is very possible, Courteney Cox let slip to Fox News.

“We’ve got a good idea. There is a good way to get us all together,” Courteney Cox told Fox News on the red carpet for 2010’s Crystal + Lucy Awards.

“Jennifer [Aniston] told me, or someone told her, or she came up with the idea herself. I don’t think it will ever happen, but it would be a great way to get us all together!”

The cast of the popular ’90s show also included Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer.

There were also reports this week Jen would have a role in the next instalment of her best pal’s horror movie franchise, Scream 4.

Star magazine reported Jen was going to make a cameo in the fourth instalment of the series but the rumours were soon quashed by the film’s production company, Us magazine reported.

Don’t let your credit cards take control

Swiping your credit card is easy, dealing with the repercussions are hard. It's time to show it who's boss.
women with shoppings bags, Getty Images

THE latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data has revealed that retail sales have jumped up by 0.3 per cent seasonally adjusted in March compared to February, and it was the sixth consecutive quarter of positive trend growth in volume terms.

Clothing, footwear and other personal accessories had one of the larger increases for the quarter at 0.9 per cent, the ABS said, so it’s likely that we ladies may have had something to do with these results.

What is most surprising about this shopping trend is the fact that our mortgages have been eating away at most Australian’s disposable incomes and shopping budgets, with six rate rises in eight months by the Reserve Bank of Australia. But we haven’t stopped shopping, in fact these figures show we haven’t slowed down either!

So does this mean that we are spending away our savings or are we taking advantage of our credit cards? Either way it’s bad news for most of us with a home loan, because interest rates are not expected to drop any time soon and are more likely to keep rising.

For instance, an average $300,000 variable home loan has increased by $300 per month in repayments since September 2009 before rates began to rise. The average standard variable rate now up to just over 7 per cent and the benchmark rate (the average of the major four banks) is up to 7.38 per cent.

Credit cards move differently to variable home loan rates and always charge more interest because they are not securitised. This means if you don’t make your repayments your credit card provider won’t take your new pair of platform pumps off you like they will take your home if you default on your mortgage.

This is why it’s so important to keep track of your spending during this cycle of interest rate rises and especially with your debts so compare credit cards to make sure you’re getting a good deal. Interest rates for credit cards are also likely to rise following the latest cash rate increases, so make sure you pay off your debts before the next wave hits.

If you have more than one credit card debt, think about combining them with a low-rate balance transfer card because there are some great deals out there. For instance, HSBC is offering zero per cent for six months and St George and Bank SA are offering 0.99 percent for six months.

These can really get you out of the red without paying any interest if you use them wisely. Just make sure you check the terms and conditions because some may charge a high rate for purchases.

Review: *The Back-up Plan*

Jennifer Lopez plays Zoe

Jennifer Lopez plays Zoe

It must be the season to be romantic with Aussie leading men, with the release of The Back-up Plan featuring Jennifer Lopez and Australian actor Alex O’Loughlin.

Zoe (Lopez) is a sweet-natured, gorgeous-looking pet-shop owner who sells dogs that aren’t in-bred pure-breds. Zoe is somehow still single and wants to have a baby on her own. Not long after going through IVF treatment, she walks cross-legged into the rain to catch a cab and bumps into the hunk of her dreams: Stan (O’Loughlin). They argue, get wet, take a train and when they emerge dry and flirting under a blazing sun, you know this is for real.

The procedure takes and Zoe is soon pregnant. Very. What’s a new boyfriend supposed to do? He flees into a local park and is accused of being a pervert. Stan sells cheese for a living (he’s not the only one) and is developing a sustainable farm. And he looks great with his shirt off. Can they be more perfect? And do they still have sex with their clothes on in the 21st century?

Kate Angelo’s (Will & Grace) script delves into new territory — the single mother — but then squibs it. We find out both Zoe and her Nanna (Linda Lavin, Alice) have commitment issues stemming from the premature death of Zoe’s mother. There’s no independence statement here; this is the gals’ fault, which even the single mothers’ group accepts.

The script has some sharp edges, but not many. Zoe’s best friend Mona (comedian Michaela Watkins) tells Zoe: “You don’t want to have kids and I’m going to show you my vagina to prove it.” And the vagina, vagina, vagina scene with Dr Harris (Robert Klein) could have been a classic in a better movie. There is even some self-depreciating humour about Lopez’s butt, and Anthony Anderson tries ad-libbing, but ends up making poo jokes. Get the picture?

Despite the number of Saturday Night Live comedians in the cast, there isn’t enough funny material for them, although the birthing scene, which seems like something out of The Exorcist, garnered lots of laughs from a group of older females. But even they were quiet as the movie moved through the waters-breaking-at-an-inconvenient-time routine.

Lopez struggles with her comic timing and instead goes for funny faces to create her comedy. O’Loughlin does a good job but his abs are more impressive and should land him more modelling jobs than acting ones. And disabled dog Nutsy steals the show.

The whole cast, script and direction have a real TV comedy feel about them — light, airy and not what you expect to pay good money for. It could be a nice way to wind down a rainy Sunday, or wind up a girls’ night out. But make sure you have a decent back-up plan yourself. This won’t be the highlight of your night.

Pretty-in-pink polishes

Keeping in character with her good-girl alter ego, Charlotte York, Kristin Davis has been flashing sexy but sweet nails on the red carpet — and she’s not the only one!

Eva Mendez and Natalie Portman have also been spotted showing off the look.

Nail-care company Orly’s creative director, Fiona Hay, says fleshy pinks and nudes are great for all seasons. We ask her how to get Kristin’s girly nails.

1. File and buff nails into desired shape. Square tips with rounded corners creates a natural appearance and are so hot right now, Hay says.

2. Apply your favourite base coat. It’ll allow your polish to last longer while protecting your nails against staining, she says.

3. Apply two thin coats of Orly French Manicure Collection in Sweet Blush ($18.95), Hay recommends. Thin layers equals even and neat coverage. Drying time is cut in half. Finish with a top coat.

Charlie Sheen sent to jail for 30 days

Charlie Sheen to spend 30 days in jail

Charlie Sheen will spend 30 days in jail if he pleads no contest next week to the misdemeanour assault of wife Brooke Mueller on Christmas Day in Aspen last year.

The Two and a Half Men star has decided to plead guilty to a lesser charge than the more serious charges he initially faced, in order to receive the reduced sentence, the UK’s Daily Mail reported.

Thirty-three-year-old Brooke, who has since split from the actor, claimed Charlie held a knife to her throat and threatened to kill her.

She later tried to withdraw the charges but Colorado prosecutors pushed ahead with the case.

The 44-year-old star is set to appear in court on June 7 for the hearing and is expected to commence his month-long stint in jail immediately, which could be cut short depending on Charlie’s behaviour.

“Charlie intends to go to court on June 7 [to] plead to a misdemeanour and immediately begin serving his 30 days in jail,” an unnamed source told People magazine.

“With good behaviour, he could end up doing 15 or so days.”

Mushrooms: the delicious fungi

Getty Images

Getty Images

Did you know mushrooms are actually edible fungus? But don’t let that put you off — this delicious food has some distinct nutritional benefits and is a fantastic all-round addition to your vegetable crisper.

Variety

In Australia and New Zealand, we have an abundant supply of button mushrooms, which are the small white mushrooms with a short stem. Varieties, such as oyster mushrooms, shitake and large field mushrooms are sometimes available in supermarkets and most Asian supermarkets will also stock them. And don’t forget canned mushrooms — they are also very tasty!

Nutrition

Regardless of the variety of mushroom, they are all usually good sources of B vitamins, especially niacin. However they are not a source of vitamin B12, which is a common misconception. And they also contribute some fibre.

Selection

When selecting, choose firm, clean mushrooms that are smooth and not wrinkled. They should also be dry and not slimy. Damp or wet mushrooms are starting to deteriorate. Store them in a brown paper bag in the fridge to prevent them from sweating and try to use them within a few days.

Preparation

Mushrooms are one of the easiest foods to prepare and cook. You don’t even have to wash them! Just wipe with a dry cloth to remove any dirt, or you can purchase a special mushroom-cleaning brush. Mushrooms taste great in risottos, soups and omelettes. Toss them into any dish.

Next time you are in the supermarket, why not try a different variety of mushrooms to the ones you usually get? But don’t get too adventurous. If you find mushrooms in the wild, please don’t eat them as they could be poisonous.

Happy cooking!

New blood test speeds up cancer detection

New blood test speeds up cancer detection

A simple blood test could be the answer to detecting cancer in the very early stages, new UK research has found.

The University of Nottingham and cancer detection technology company Oncimmune have developed a blood test that can assist in the detection of cancer up to four years earlier than current testing methods, such as mammography and CT scans.

The discovery, which is based on the work of University of Nottingham breast cancer specialist Professor John Robertson, also means that doctors will receive test results quicker.

The blood test research was carried out on a group of women in the UK with high-risk breast cancer and confirmed the success of the new technology.

The research found the condition in more than half of these high-risk cancer patients could have been detected in blood samples taken up to four years earlier, well before being later diagnosed by other methods.

The new blood test will not only allow the early detection of cancer but may change the diagnosis and treatment of solid cancers like lung, breast, ovarian, colon and prostate cancer.

A test for lung cancer using the technology will be launched in the US this month followed by a launch in the UK early next year.

UPDATE: Following testing of the technology, Executive Chairman of Oncimmune Geoffrey Hamilton-Fairley says there are plans to implement it world-wide in 2011.

“We plan to start rolling the test out on a worldwide basis in 2011,” he told Woman’s Day.

“We are asking parties interested in being our distributor or partner in each territory to contact us now.”

Top six winter hair tricks!

Top six winter hair tricks!

Don’t know what to do with your locks this winter? Toni & Guy’s hair expert Sam Overton shares his top five hot looks for your locks and explains how to use dry shampoo and which products work well in winter.

1. Dry shampoo

In between shampoos use dry shampoo (no water) to give your hair a dry, gritty rock-star feel. Flip your head over and work in the dry shampoo and blast it like crazy with your hair dryer. This will create natural body and texture.

2. Wear it out with curls

Wear your hair out with soft, sexy waves. Randomly pick bits of your hair out and twist them round your iron to create some loose curls. Do this all over then brush the curls out to create, soft, sexy waves.

3. Braids

Get a few more days out of your hair with braids which are big this season. Loosely braid your hair to the side (either side looks hot), tie it off then ruffle the braid so it looks as it’s been in for ages. There you go — yesterday’s hair today.

4. Hairspray, hairspray, hairspray

Don’t be scared of hairspray, it’s your friend. Once you’ve styled your hair (short or long) grab your hairspray and start shaking your head like a madman, all the while spraying the hairspray and blasting your hair with a hair dryer.

5. Get your hair moving!

This is so the hairspray doesn’t just end up in two places. The reason for this is to create separation, texture and body and also to look like you haven’t used any product in your hair — au natural.

6. Use good shampoos and treatments

Spoiling your hair is good for you. Try and repair all the summer beach damage you’ve caused to your hair. Hair is forgiving but make sure not to leave it too late.

My dead husband lives on – as a cardboard cut out

My dead husband live on - as a cardboard cut out

Even after succumbing to two brain tumours, Paul Challis lives on in his family’s hearts and in cardboard, reports Lianne Ryan.

Dad of two Paul Challis died from cancer at just 38, only weeks after being diagnosed with two brain tumours.

His death devastated wife Maria, 36, and their two children Jack, 7, and Molly, 9, but his widow was determined he would never be forgotten.

Now a 185cm cardboard cut-out of Paul stands in the family home he once shared with them, looking over their shoulders every day.

The 2D-dad was a guest at his own funeral and even attended a friend’s wedding weeks after his death.

“Paul was always the life and soul of the party and it seemed only fitting for him to be there for the final party his final farewell,” Maria explains.

“I think he’d have loved it,” she smiles. “He would have said, ‘Why didn’t I think of that?’

He is pictured at one of his happiest moments, holding a bottle of champagne and laughing while onboard a cruise with Maria.

“When you lose someone you love, you worry you’ll forget them and this is our way of remembering Paul and keeping our precious memories of him alive.”

Rather than being freaked out by their cardboard dad, Maria’s Jack and Molly have got into the spirit too, finding fun ways to keep his memory alive.

“The children have dressed him up in a Santa outfit at Christmas and as Dracula on Halloween,” Maria says.

“He was due to go to a friend’s wedding some weeks after he died. He didn’t make it, but his cut-out did and it was nice to think he was there.”
