Hunky Hugh gets physical…and spiritual

Hunky Hugh gets physical...and spiritual

Hugh Jackman’s body and soul are in harmony as he plays Wolverine again.

He may be in his forties, but Hugh Jackman’s up-and-at-’em approach to life suggests there’s no midlife crisis on the radar. In fact, the actor, who turns 42 on October 12, claims he’s in peak physical and spiritual condition and can just about move mountains!

It comes as Hugh morphs once again into brawny, bulked-up Wolverine for the next instalment of the X-Men movies – X-Men Origins: Wolverine 2 – due to begin production in early 2011.

He is back at the gym, training hard and sweating it out on jogs that display his bulging muscles. But as these pictures taken last week in Manhattan show, he’s also playing pretty hard – turning his 10-year-old son Oscar into a human dumbbell by effortlessly throwing him over his shoulder in a fireman’s lift.

The Aussie hunk is determined his next outing as Wolverine will see him bigger, stronger and fitter than ever. So how does he get into such jaw-dropping shape? It’s simple, really – exercise and eating.

“For Wolverine I have to eat a lot more, train with a lot heavier weights and get my naturally leaner body a little bigger,” Hugh says. His trainer is Michael Ryan, a bodybuilder who believes in training hard and eating six meals a day. He’s also one of Hugh’s oldest friends.

Dannii’s explosive tell-all

Dannii's explosive tell-all

She’s gone from Young Talent Time to international star, now she’s ready to tell it like it is about sister Kylie, plastic surgery, and the women who’ve made her life hell.

Dannii Minogue has lifted the lid on her personal life, penning a no-holds-barred autobiography. In the book, which hit UK stores last week, she spills the beans on her rivalry with big sister Kylie and her bitter relationship with former mother-in-law the late Lady Sonia McMahon. Dannii’s candid confessions have catapulted the new mum back into the headlines and reignited old feuds, especially with Sharon Osbourne.

Rivalry with Kylie

“I can tell you it’s not easy to be publicly pitted against someone you love and admire,” Dannii writes, revealing that her rivalry with Kylie hit fever pitch while she was struggling with both her career and her 1995 divorce to Nip/Tuck star Julian McMahon.

“I was struggling with the stark realisation that nobody wanted me – not my record company, not my husband, and definitely not the public. “The truth of the matter is I never felt like I was competing with my sister. Although I got tired of the constant comparisons and doing interview after interview in which I’d be asked more questions about her than myself, it wasn’t because I hate her and felt jealousy towards her. It was the opposite. The truth is, I am and always have been so very proud of Kylie, and she is of me.”

Plastic surgery

Despite constant rumours of endless surgery, Dannii, 38, claims that she has only ever gone under the knife for a breast enhancement. She says she surprised her record producer and manager by showing them off shortly before presenting Top Of The Pops in 1997.

“He [Terry Ronald] asked me, ‘Where exactly did they come from?’ He was pointing directly at my breasts. “‘Oh, these!’ I laughed, ‘They are brand new, darling, and they feel really natural. Do you wanna meet the girls and have a feel?’ “Terry nodded, slowly, with a hint of fear in his eyes, and I pulled open my shirt. Then he put his hands gingerly on my bare breasts and smiled. “‘They’re absolutely lovely,’ he said, grinning.

Affair diary 2: I’m considering a romance with a work colleague

Office attraction

Image source: Getty - posed by models

When we got back home I didn’t actually see Ben or Kelly for nearly four weeks and I was so busy with the kids, Rob and work that I almost managed to put them out of my mind.

A few times I lay in bed thinking about my reaction to Ben but I convinced myself that I’d imagined it – the holiday atmosphere or too much to drink had unnerved me and now everything was back to normal.

Rob was in terrific form after the holiday and we were getting on even better than usual, which included quite a few nights curled on the couch and early nights with a bottle of wine after we’d packed the kids off to bed.

Then my boss, Maria, called me in for a meeting to tell me that our firm was working with another company – usually one of our competitors – on a big advertising account. When she told me the name of the company we would be working for I was stunned with excitement at being involved with such a major player and even more thrilled when she said I would be leading our team.

The first meeting with our collaborators was that afternoon and I was bursting to tell Rob, so snatched a quick phone call to break the news. “This is such a break for you!” he said and I loved him for sounding as excited as I was “I’ll finish early and get the kids so you just take as much time as you need. See you tonight.”

I spent my lunch hour reading up both on the company we would be working with and the account we had won and then ensured my hair, makeup and total look was as elegant and flawless as possible.

Spraying on perfume I gave a final twirl, collected the other three members of my team and breezed into the conference room, only to find myself putting my hand out in greeting to an equally surprised Ben, who was leading the other team.

Everyone else introduced themselves and we settled down to a very busy and productive afternoon, finally finishing up as the office was closing. Everyone else dispersed very quickly, but Ben loitered as I said goodnight to Maria.

“I really enjoyed working with you,” he said as we got into the lift and again I tried to put my attraction for him out of my mind “You’ve got some great ideas there and I think we’re going to work well as a team.” I nodded. “Yes, we all seem to be on the same wavelength but this is going to be a busy few months. How are Kelly and the kids and have you all settled in?” I replied.

He laughed. “ It’s been mad, but let’s all get together soon. Um…do you fancy a quick coffee to tie up the loose ends?”

I hesitated at first but we discussed all the finer details of the campaign before coffee became wine and the chat became more personal and I could feel that unsettling confusion stealing over me.

Sure, we were on the same wavelength when it came to work and had the potential to get on extremely well as friends, but that was no reason to make an idiot of myself, especially when I was so happily married.

I looked at my watch as Rob crossed my mind and realised it was time to go before one wine became two and I would be unable to drive, so Ben walked me to my car.

“It was lovely to see you again and I’m looking forward to working with you,” I said calmly, proud of hiding my feelings as we shook hands.

“I’m not the only one who feels like this, am I?” he said suddenly, sliding his hands round my waist.

All my good intentions disappeared and I kissed him back as fiercely as he was kissing me, ramming my body unashamedly against his thigh as he held me tightly against him. Any thoughts of Rob disappeared and I was desperate for Ben to keep stroking me, as his hands slid up my thin blouse. “Not here!” I gasped eventually. “Where then?” he said urgently and I realised that it was no longer if, but when I would sleep with this man…

What do you do when you see a snake in your yard? If you’re Zsa Zsa Gabor’s husband, Frederic Prinz von Anhalt, the answer is call emergency services.

Los Angeles Fire Department officials confirmed that a unit was dispatched to the socialite’s home to try and bring in the slithering creature.

Unfortunately, the snake could not be found after it was seen sliding into the bushes.

Von Anhalt was reportedly scared senseless. “I cannot sleep tonight if this beast is around,” he told TMZ.com.

The fire department informed von Anhalt the Department of Animal Care & Control should be his point of contact for any future snake-related issues.

*A Darker Music*

A Darker Music, BY MARIS MORTON, SCRIBE, $32.95

To budding authors out there, it’s heartening to see that teacher and artist Maris Morton was 72 when she snatched the inaugural CAL Scribe Fiction Prize 2010 (awarded to an unpublished manuscript by an Australian writer over the age of 35).

Her novel is a “derring dip” into a male-dominated, old-style way of life on a rural WA merino sheep stud in fictional Downe. Set against a backdrop of the changing seasons in native bush and the contrasting gossamer-thread orchard around the homestead, Morton weaves the landscape into a gentle – and at times pedestrian – tale of generations of family intrigue.

A cast of characters, including no-nonsense agency housekeeper Mary Lanyon and dying lady of the house Clio Hazlitt, has their secrets laid bare during sheep-shearing season, as competent Mary feeds vital meals to the hungry shearers – pork “sangers” and cheese scones for morning smoko – while fighting advances from a beery shepherd. Morton’s UN peacekeeping soldier widow Mary manages to satisfyingly marshal the neglected property into orderly submission, all the while confronting archaic attitudes and unearthing diaries of lost dreams and bittersweet memories.

*Fall Of Giants*

Fall Of Giants, BY KEN FOLLETT, PAN MACMILLAN, $49.99.

Ken Follett is perhaps best known for his two historical novels, Pillars Of The Earth and World Without End. And his reputation as a master storyteller is again confirmed. It is the first in the Century Trilogy and introduces the reader to the five families whose lives Follett will follow.

The book opens just before the outbreak of World War I and closes in 1925. At nearly 1000 pages, it’s not for the faint-hearted, but the author’s skill as a writer means you don’t even notice the size. The main characters’ lives unfold with compelling drama and complexity, and once again, Follett’s research is impeccable.
