Meet the bunnings bride!

Meet the bunnings bride!

Natasja and Dave felt like a couple of tools as they tied the knot, reports Warren Gibbs.

When lovebirds Natasja and Dave Johnson planned their wedding day, they imagined a setting of golden sand and tropical palms. Instead, they exchanged vows among stacks of wood and tins of paint at their local Bunnings store.

After flash flooding and gale- force winds forced the couple to cancel their September 25 wedding on Mackay’s beachfront, the pair were beside themselves. “I was so upset, I couldn’t stop crying,” says Natasja. “I’d been dreaming about our wedding all year but the rain had destroyed it.”

On the eve of their big day, the couple still had no venue, and were beginning to wonder if they’d be able to get married at all. That is, until one of their guests suggested exchanging the beachfront for Bunnings.

“I was shocked into silence,” admits Natasja, when her maid-of-honour’s mum, Shelly, suggested holding it at the local Bunnings where Shelly worked.

“She explained my predicament to the store manager and he gave it the green light – as long as it was alcohol free.”

Peter Russell-Clarke brushes up on the art of love

Peter Russell-Clarke brushes up on the art of love

The veteran TV chef and artist tells Jackie Brygel the secret to his 50 years of marital bliss … humour helps!

Visitors to the sprawling rural property that Peter Russell-Clarke now calls home could be forgiven for immediately asking, “Where’s the cheese?” After all, for many years the iconic chef and artist had the entire nation repeating this catch-phrase, thanks to his incredibly popular TV campaigns for the Australian Dairy Corporation.

“People do still ask me that all the time,” Peter, 75, says with a chuckle. “Of course, there’s always some in my fridge. “Cheese really is one of the great products God has given us. The main thing about it is that it actually tastes good.”

Having recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of his marriage to former flight-attendant Jan, with whom he has a son and daughter, Peter is showing no signs of slowing down.

Busier than ever with a food segment on Victorian radio station Bay FM, and with his paintings in great demand, Peter has lost none of his passion for food or art.

“When you’re cooking, you’re dealing with colour, form, shape and texture, and it’s exactly the same with painting,” he says.

Portia de Rossi reveals: How Ellen saved me

Portia De Rossi reveals: How Ellen saved me

In her new autobiography, Portia de Rossi explains how it was Ellen DeGeneres’s love that helped her overcome anorexia.

She was living the Hollywood dream – a major role in a top US telly show, a pay packet to match and the fame she’d long craved. But behind the perfect veneer, Aussie-born actress Portia de Rossi battled anorexia so severe it almost killed her.

In her new memoir, Unbearable Lightness, the 37-year-old actress describes in terrifying detail just how bad her illness had become – and how the love of her now-wife, chat show host Ellen DeGeneres, 52, helped heal her.

“Learning to be more honest is probably the biggest influence that Ellen has had on me. We’ve talked a lot about this, which is a big thing for me,” Portia recently told a reporter. “Ellen has never really worried about her weight and is more on the side of feeling angry that for women to be perceived as beautiful, they need to be skinny.”

With Ellen’s support, Portia began writing the book, which chronicles her battle with anorexia from her days as a teenage model in Australia to the peak of her fame. While playing Nell Porter in the hit show Ally McBeal, Portia says she subsisted on 630 kilojoules a day, and took 20 laxatives.

She also exercised obsessively, sprinting on a treadmill at home and in her trailer on set. Instead of walking from room to room in her house she did lunges, and would even pull her car over on the way to work to do “wind sprints”.

Ange’s Aussie adventure (well it looks like her!)

Ange's Aussie adventure (well it looks like her!)

Imagine being Angelina Jolie, the most famous woman in the world, with an army of photographers following your every move. Lina, an amazing look-alike, knows exactly how it feels.

“Is that her? I think it is … she has the tatts. Wow, it is Angelina Jolie. Let’s see if we can get a photo. Angelina, Angelina. Over here. Can we get a photo with you? I love you. Please, just one shot.” That was the reaction from one fan, who spotted Angelina, her bodyguard and a small entourage arriving at swank Sydney eatery Cafe Sydney for a candlelit dinner last week.

From there it just got more bizarre. Heads turned, well-heeled diners whispered and pointed, and a small army of waiters circled our table attentively, making sure Angelina’s every desire was fulfilled as she held court on the harbour view terrace.

Waiters wearing headpieces kept a respectful eye on their VIP guest, only breaking with protocol to request she sign the guest book as she swept out with her burly bodyguard.

If only they knew it wasn’t Angelina but her incredible look-alike, Spanish actress Lina Sands, who kept popping up around the city in what seemed like a secret Angelina visit Down Under.

“That’s Angelina Jolie!” screamed a young woman when Lina arrived at Cafe Sydney in a limousine. OK, we did pull up at the rear entrance to avoid any attention – just like any big star would do – but still it was an-over-the- top reaction, made even more surprising because a pit stop at nearby Opera Bar provoked a much more subdued response.

Cameron Daddo and Ed O’Neill: We’re best mates!

Cameron Daddo and Ed O’Neill: We're best mates!

Just 12 months ago, Cameron Daddo was jobless and broke … then he met the Modern Family star.

Aussie actor Cameron Daddo can thank his 10-year-old son River for helping get his Hollywood career back on track, after he faced losing his home when the work dried up.

It was through River’s friendship with actor Ed O’Neill’s daughter Sophia, 11, that Cam met the Modern Family star at the lowest point of his professional life – and generous Ed stepped in with solid advice and the hand of friendship.

“Our kids just really hit it off,” explains Cam, 45, in an exclusive interview with Woman’s Day at Ed’s Santa Monica home. Sophia and River have attended the same Los Angeles school for the past five years, but it wasn’t until they both enrolled in circus classes last year that their dads got together.

“You can never really dictate who your kids choose as friends. You can only hope they’ll pick kids whose parents you’ll also enjoy spending time with, because you’ll be seeing a lot of those people!” laughs Ed.

“While our children learned the trapeze, did acrobatics and walked on stilts, Ed and I shared stories about our lives and work,” Cam says. “I found Ed to be such a kind, loyal and supportive bloke. It’s been a challenge finding work here, and Ed, bless him, took my headshot into Modern Family and sang my praises. Maybe, in some way, Ed’s faith in me has changed my luck.”

Catriona Rowntree: I’m pregnant!

Catriona Rowntree: We make cute babies!

It’s a case of “Why stop at one?” for Catriona Rowntree and hubby James Pettit. The TV presenter chats to Lucy Chesterton about baby No. 2.

As she curls up on a couch to chat about her second pregnancy, Catriona Rowntree subconsciously rubs her tummy. Looking down suddenly, the exuberant TV presenter breaks into a grin before laughing heartily at herself and admitting that, even after 22 weeks of pregnancy, she’s still getting used to her compact bump.

“So far, what’s happening to my body has been the opposite of all the old wives’ tales about a second pregnancy!” she says, stretching and readjusting her position in the warm sun streaming through the window.

“I was told ‘You will show earlier’, ‘You will be bigger’, and ‘Your appetite will skyrocket the second time around’. “But it hasn’t been that way for me at all. I’m still worried people look at my tummy and just think it’s too much spaghetti bolognaise!”

For Catriona, the decision to have a second child with devoted husband and “country boy” James Pettit, 39, was a conscious one. Their son, Andrew John Rowntree Pettit, was born in August last year but Catriona, also 39, knew she didn’t want to risk delaying another baby.

“I’m in my late thirties so I didn’t want to muck around,” Catriona says firmly. “I don’t want to be pregnant for the next seven years, and while that baby changing table is out, we may as well put it to good use!”
