Credit card ‘hidden’ rates soar during Christmas

Looks as though that little piece of plastic can get you into even more trouble at Christmas, with credit card providers giving you a gift of their own in the form of higher rates.

WELL that’s not so festive, is it? Around the season that’s meant to be jolly, shoppers are being warned to watch their credit card rates and think about switching to a better deal.

The warning follows research by RateCity, which found that many credit card providers have increased their interest rates for purchases on their balance transfer credit cards when the introductory period ends (also known as the revert rate) by 385 basis points on average since December 2007.

It can be dangerous for Australians to use their balance transfer credit cards to make purchases, because often the interest rates are a lot higher than what’s on the market.

When you switch to a balance transfer credit card you will be given an introductory rate, for instance 0 per cent for six months. This is the rate that the debt you transferred will receive. You will also have another interest rate for purchases you may make after you receive your new card, such as 12 per cent per annum.

What many people may not realise is that after the introductory period of six months for this example, not only does the interest rate for your transferred debt increase but also the purchase interest rate may rise as well.

While many savvy Australians will start their Christmas shopping now to get it all out of the way before the festive season, it’s not worth paying down the added debt if you are using the wrong credit card. For instance, a $2000 bicycle purchased in October using a credit card rate of 19 per cent, could end up costing you an extra $62 by Christmas.

If you do plan to get your Christmas shopping out of the way before December, there is a way to help tackle your debt. You should first pay off your debt before attacking the Christmas shelves and set yourself a budget to avoid clocking up a bill you can’t afford to pay back.

Balance transfer credit cards are a great way to avoid paying interest after racking up a debt, but only if they’re used properly. In this case, after completing your Christmas shopping, compare your card’s interest charges to balance transfer cards from other providers. As long as you plan to pay off the debt before the introductory period ends and don’t use the card for expenses, you will be able to enjoy Christmas without the headache of paying interest.

Denise Richards fears for her daughters

An insider has told how Denise Richards’ two daughters “are still very much in the dark” about their father Charlie Sheen’s latest run-in with the law.

Last week Sheen was found in the company of an adult film star in a trashed hotel suite, naked and intoxicated.

“Denise knows the girls are going to go through hell when they get old enough to understand all the ugliness,” the unnamed source told Us Weekly, and she has not opened up to the girls about their father’s indiscretions and unlawful incidents.

Richards has also chosen not to tell her daughters about Sheen’s Christmas Day brain explosion where he allegedly threatened estranged wife Brooke Mueller with a knife and told her, “If you ever tell anybody, I’ll kill you.”

Six-year-old Sam and five-year-old Lola are reportedly “a little afraid” of Charlie and stuck close to their mother’s side at a family outing to a performance of Mary Poppins.

The girls followed their mother to the bathroom, the magazine was told.

Processed meat, chips and soft drinks linked to ADHD

Around one in 20 children experience ADHD. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, generally known as ADHD, is the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorder in children. Children with ADHD can show symptoms such as inattention, impulsive behaviour and hyperactivity.

Although the condition is often detected in children, ADHD often persists through to adolescence and into adulthood. Many scientific studies have shown a link between ADHD and food additives or nutrients, but until now, there hasn’t been through research on whole dietary patterns and ADHD.

In pictures: food the kids will love

In a recent Australian study, researchers looked at the diets of almost 1800 adolescents to see whether there were any links between ADHD in children who ate a “healthy” diet compared to those who ate a typical “Western” diet.

The “healthy” diet was high in omega-3, fibre and folate and low in saturated fat and sugar. People consuming this pattern had high intakes of fruit, vegetables, legumes and whole grains.

The Western dietary pattern was high in fat, saturated fat, refined sugar and salt. This pattern included foods such as processed meats, confectionary, takeaway foods, chips and soft drinks.

When comparing the two styles of eating, it was found that the Western diet was linked with ADHD. Teenagers consuming the high-energy, highly processed foods were more than twice as likely to have ADHD compared to people eating wholesome foods.

There are a number of reasons the Western diet was shown to be linked with ADHD. A higher intake of food additives, lower levels of omega-3 fats, or lower intakes of vitamins and minerals important for brain functioning are just a few. Although more studies on this subject are needed, this still gives another reason to aim for an eating style rich in nutritious whole foods including plenty of fruits, vegetables, wholegrains, legumes, nuts and seeds.

Kylie Minogue on strict water diet?

Getty

In a bid to finally crack the US market Kylie Minogue has subjected herself to a harsh diet regime, the UK’s Daily Mail has reported.

The paper says a source close to the star has revealed that her new super-slim figure is down to her “water diet”, which has helped the already trim star drop a dress size in preparation for her TV appearances in the US.

The diet involves drinking just water flavoured with freshly squeezed lemon or lime and only eating one small low-kilojoule meal a day.

“When she wants a treat she freezes the citrus water into ice cubes so it feels like she’s eating a healthy ice lolly,” the unnamed source said.

The source also said that “she wasn’t overweight” to begin with but says Kylie will take drastic measures “whenever she’s due to give a high-profile performance or has a photo shoot”.

Kylie has since taken to Twitter denying the report and that she is on any such diet. “OMG……. media reports that I am on a water diet are not only untrue but irresponsible. No, no, NO!!!!!!” she tweeted.

Her US appearances included Dancing with the Stars and the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Following that she flew to Paris to debut her new single and next week will appear on the UK’s X Factor alongside sister Dannii.

Jamiroquai labels Dannii Minogue and Cheryl Cole “useless”

Snapper

It seems the Osbourne’s aren’t the only ones who have a problem with Dannii Minogue.

Jamiroquai’ frontman Jay Kay also has a problem with the 39-year-old singer and Cheryl Cole after he called the pair “useless” before he performed on X Factor in the UK on the weekend.

Before appearing on the show, the 40-year-old singer did an interview with the UK’s Sun newspaper where he made foulmouthed insults against the X Factor judges.

“What the f—? When have you ever done anything? You’re useless. The pair of you,” he said.

“I just don’t like the w— stuff I have to do. F—ing X Factor and that.”

The 40-year-old probably should have thought his comments through well before performing his new single, ‘White Knuckle Ride’, on the X Factor stage in front of the pair.

Dannii and Cheryl, who clearly weren’t impressed, spoke to each other during his set and refused to applaud the performance afterwards.

Following his set, Jay was interviewed by X Factor host Dermot O’Leary. “Everybody’s been charming,” he said. “It’s been wonderful.”

When asked if he had met any of the judges before he replied, “Well, I’ve met two of them.”

At which point Dannii and Cheryl exchanged icy glances before mouthing words to each other.
