William popped the question to Kate while on holidays in Kenya a month ago. The ring, an oval sapphire cushioned in diamonds was also Diana’s engagement ring. “It’s my mother’s engagement ring, so of course it’s very special to me,” the prince said. “This was my way of making sure that my mother didn’t miss out on today.”

When asked about her thoughts on one day becoming queen, Middleton spoke earnestly. “It’s quite a daunting prospect but hopefully I’ll take it my stride,” she said. “But William’s a great teacher so hopefully he’ll be able to help me along the way.”

Rumours of an engagement went into overdrive a fortnight ago with British tabloids correctly predicting a wedding would be held in the summer of 2011. So safe was the prospect that many British betting agencies stopped taking bets on a 2011 wedding.

The internet went into a frenzy when the news was posted on the royal family’s Twitter pages.

“The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are absolutely delighted at the news of Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s engagement,” the Queen’s @BritishMonarchy page announced.

And Prince Charles’ @ClarenceHouse page said, “The Prince of Wales is delighted to announce the engagement of Prince William to Miss Catherine Middleton.”

David Arquette’s mistress tells all

Getty

David Arquette wasted no time telling his mistress Jasmine Waltz that he had separated from his wife Courteney Cox when they first met.

The model and waitress told Life & Style magazine that within just 20 minutes of meeting him at Premiere nightclub, where she worked, the 39-year-old revealed all about his split from Cox.

“I was surprised to hear that,” she said. “But his friends all seemed to know about it. He was beaten down. He mentioned that he hadn’t slept with anyone since separating from Courteney.”

The 28-year-old said David seemed agitated and depressed about the separation when they first met. Two nights later David returned to Premiere and waited for Jasmine to finish her shift before taking her to a house party.

Jasmine said the pair, who had both been drinking, left the party together at 2.30am and David took her to the house where he grew up and was intent on having sex.

“It wasn’t bad sex, but it wasn’t emotional. It was quick and painless. Nothing exciting,” she said.

“When we were done, he just looked at me and said, ‘This is the first time I’ve felt like a man in a very long time’.”

Jasmine said that before she slept with the Scream star she was keen to ensure he was telling the truth about the split.

“I definitely got the impression that Courteney had made the decision to separate,” Jasmine said.

“David did not seem like the one in control of the situation. Not at all.”

The prince, 28, proposed to Kate on a holiday to Kenya last month, giving his 28-year-old fiancée his late mother’s ring. The ring, which the late Princess Diana first wore in 1981, is an oval blue sapphire surrounded by diamonds.

“It’s my mother’s engagement ring, so of course it’s very special to me,” Prince William said while posing for photos at St James’s Palace.

“This was my way of making sure that my mother didn’t miss out on today.”

Kate said the engagement was a very personal time for the couple who have faced “will they, won’t they” speculation for most of their relationship.

“[The proposal] was out there in a very quiet lodge and it was very romantic and it was a very personal time for both of us,” she said.

Prince William, did however, admit he waited a long time to ask for Kate’s hand in marriage.

“I don’t remember how many years it’s been, forgetful memory,” he joked. “The timing is right now, we’re both very, very happy and I’m very glad that I have done it.”

Shortly after the announcement from Clarence House the Queen shared news of the couple’s engagement via the monarchy’s Twitter page.

The short message read: “The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh are absolutely delighted at the news of Prince William and Catherine Middleton’s engagement.”

Little boy’s rare illness: An ice cream could kill me

Little boy's rare illness: An ice cream could kill me

A deadly allergy means this little boy will miss out on the simple pleasures most kids enjoy.

A paddle in shallow water or digging in the sand are part of happy summer holidays. But for three-year-old James Simpson, splashing around in the surf or playing beach cricket are things he can only dream of.

Due to a rare and baffling medical condition, if James gets too hot or too cold he could suffer a fatal anaphylactic shock – which means simple pleasures such as eating ice cream are out of the question.

James’s mum, Laura, says it’s hard when James sees other kids eating ice cream and she has to tell him he can’t have any.

“It’s heartbreaking,” she says. “It’s hard to deny him these things when he hasn’t been naughty. It feels like he’s being punished.”

“The first time it happened, James had been splashing around in a new wading pool we’d bought him,” says Laura, 28, from Sydney’s northern beaches. “Within five minutes of being in the water his body blew up with these long, rectangular and thick welts. It looked like he’d been whipped all over his body.

Then his eyelids started to swell over. We panicked and took him straight to hospital. One of the nurses said, ‘He’s eaten something and had an allergic reaction to food.’ But I knew he hadn’t.”

Romance on The Block: Cheryl and Brenton get engaged!

The whole cast and crew were in on Brenton’s secret, writes Clare Rigden, when he planned a proposal, with all the bells and whistles, to his longtime love Cheryl.

She’d been hinting for years that she wanted a ring, and now it turns out The Block star Brenton was just biding his time, waiting for the perfect moment to pop the question to gorgeous girlfriend Cheryl. And what better place to do it than on the hit show – in front of millions of viewers!

“It just seemed like the perfect opportunity,” says Brenton, 27, who proposed to his girlfriend of six years while the cameras were rolling for this week’s episode. “I woke up one morning and got chatting to [fellow The Block renovator] Duncan, and was telling him how I’d been planning to ask Chez to marry me next year. He just said, ‘Well, you’ll never get a better time than right now!’

“I figured he was right, that I’m never going to get an opportunity like this again. And if I did do it, it would be on camera for our future kids to see, and it would be nice for our family.”

Cue a visit to the neighbours! Brenton knew he wanted the day to be extra special for Chez, 28, so he consulted downstairs Block residents John and Neisha and Mark and Duncan to make sure everything ran smoothly.

“Everyone loved being in on the secret,” he says. “They were right into it – especially Duncan. He really helped me out, going off to Freedom to buy candles to put around the apartment to surprise Chez.”

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie’s gang fly high!

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's gang fly high!

A playful romp in the park was just the tonic for an overworked Ange and her family.

Taking time out from the film set in Hungary where she’s directing a harrowing love story set during the Bosnian war, Angelina Jolie was thrilled to spend time with her hunky partner Brad Pitt and children Pax, Zahara and Shiloh.

Doting Brad flew to Hungary from Boston, where he’s been working on the movie Moneyball, and revelled in a fun-filled reunion with Ange and the kids.

But despite voicing superhero Metro Man in the new animated movie Megamind, Brad says he’s not a hero to his kids.

“Spider-Man is big in our family,” says Brad. “The kids think he’s the coolest. If there was one superhero they would want me to play, that would be the one. I’d score big with them.”

While Ange, 35, has been busy making her directorial feature debut, the children have been attending a French-American school in Budapest.

Sara Leonardi: I don't want to replace Jane

The Italian beauty shrugs off criticism of her romance with Glenn McGrath, saying their life together is a whole new chapter.

Sara Leonardi knows she will never replace Glenn McGrath’s late wife Jane, but even she was caught out when her fiancé’s own charity started questioning her role in the cricketer’s life.

Read about Glenn and Sara’s secret wedding here!

The 28-year-old felt the need to hit back at claims it was too soon for the couple to share their love in public, after it was last week revealed The McGrath Foundation had questioned 1200 people about her engagement to Glenn – and whether it would be disrespectful of her to accompany the 40-year-old to the Ashes.

“I’ve been listening to the news and there’s a lot of people who have been in the same kind of role that Glenn has been, and gone through the same thing, and I think, unless you are in the situation, can you actually know what it feels?” a frustrated Sara told the media last week.

“The survey’s neither here nor there, I think Australians are genuinely happy for us.”

While the foundation – set up in honour of Jane, who died in 2008 after a long and valiant battle against breast cancer – has since admitted the poll was a mistake, Sara says she is doing her best to shrug off the controversy.
