The ring on Sara Leonardi’s finger tells the story. A large white diamond surrounded by smaller pink, yellow and blue diamonds, set in white gold. “The ring says everything about Glenn and I and the life we’re making here,” says Sara, 28, the wife of former cricketer Glenn McGrath, who lost his wife, Jane, to breast cancer in 2008.

“It’s like our lives. We’re different people, but we’re also both colourful and happy people – it’s about how we fit it all together.”

Since going public with their relationship in March, Sara has fallen in love with Australia and her new life here.

“It’s been a huge and exciting year, filled with everything that I could have hoped for and more,” says Sara. “The children, Holly and James, are doing great. All of us have come a long way, taken giant steps and grown together as a family. Some days have been hard, that’s true, but mostly it’s been wonderful.”

That almost seamless blending will help make Christmas special this year. Sara’s mother is coming from Italy to join Glenn’s family at the couple’s home in Sydney.

“Christmas is all about family and friends,” says Sara. “I’m excited for the kids, but I’m also excited because my mum will be here. She’ll be cooking for everyone.

Glenn’s family will be with us, too, and we’ll take everyone out on the boat in the afternoon. It will be a great combination.”

2010 newsmakers: Lara Bingle

Photography by Pierre Toussaint. Hair and make-up by Max May.

Model Lara Bingle may have been through one of the most turbulent years of her young life, but she is determined to treat it as an opportunity to grow.

“It has been an amazing learning year for me,” she says. “I feel independent and more self-aware than I was in the beginning. I believe it has helped me grow as a person and that is the most important thing in my eyes.”

The 23-year-old endured a flurry of tabloid headlines in March, after the unauthorised publication of a nude photograph, followed by intense media scrutiny during the subsequent collapse of her relationship with former fiancé, Australian Test cricket vice-captain Michael Clarke.

“The headlines are what they are,” says Lara. “Although many have been inaccurate, I just take them in my stride and try to have a sense of humour about it all.

“People perceive me in the way the media chooses to paint me. I am just doing what I love and I feel blessed to be able to do that and be given extraordinary opportunities along the way.”

And she’s looking forward to a family Christmas. “I love giving presents,” says Lara, “especially to my family and friends. I am very particular about the wrapping. There’s nothing better than receiving a well-wrapped present.

“In a perfect world, I would love to have a white Christmas this year. I’d love to go away overseas with my mum and brother.”

Kate Middleton “given royal assistance like no other girl”

Getty

As her romance with Prince William developed, Kate Middleton reportedly received intense royal training to help her cope with the pressures of one day becoming a part of the royal family.

Kate, who will marry her prince on April 29, 2011, at Westminster Abbey, was treated like no other prospective princess within the royal family, Us Weekly reported.

“[Kate] was given royal assistance like no other girl has ever been given before entering the family,” Katie Nicholl, author of William and Harry: Behind the palace walls told the magazine.

The “royal assistance” given to the 28-year-old included lessons on how William’s late mother, Princess Diana, conducted her busy life as well as tutorials on royal correspondence, public speaking and advice on “how to behave at banquets”.

“About three years ago, palace staff started showing Kate video of Diana,” she said.

“Video of her getting out of a car and paparazzi going berserk, so that Kate would know how to deal with it. Now she already knows how this works.”

Prince William’s hero helicopter rescue

Putting the hype of the royal engagement aside, Prince William is also getting attention for his role in the rescue of a hiker who was suffering chest pains on a mountainside in northern Wales on November 18.

In his role as a Royal Air Force Sea King helicopter pilot, Prince William was called out to assist hiker Greg Watkins, who was suffering from chest pains, the UK’s Sunday Mirror reported.

The rescue saw the 28-year-old newly engaged prince and a team of three others fly through a storm more than 900m over Snowdon mountain to reach the hiker.

“I didn’t know much about what was happening at the time,” Watkins said.

“The winchman helped me out and onto a stretcher and whispered, ‘Prince William’s just flown you here.’ It didn’t really sink in until I woke up after my operation. Now I think it’s amazing.”

Prince William was the hero of the rescue after manoeuvring the 22m-long helicopter through a break in the weather and guided it to a position that enabled the crew to reach Watkins who was then airlifted to hospital.

We’re stuck in the fifties!

Little boy's rare illness: An ice cream could kill me

The calendar may say 2010, but for this couple the clock stopped 60 years ago.

Take one glance at Susan Cadzow and her fiance Marc Rondeau’s house and you’d think you had stepped back in time. And it’s not just their cool furniture that looks like it belongs in the 1950s. Susan and Marc could have just stepped out of I Love Lucy.

The couple have happily locked themselves into a never-ending time warp where every day sees them living a total 1950s lifestyle. It’s the decade of their choice. “We’re not some couple who are into dress-ups and pretending,” Marc says. “For us, this is our complete way of life.”

He’s not joking. As Woman’s Day approaches the soon-to-be-married couple’s “groovy pad” in Sydney’s inner west, we spot Susan and Marc through the venetians, jiving. The record is spinning on the radiogram and Bill Haley is rocking.

“You name anything you live your life with in the modern world, and you can bet we will have a 1950s version of it,” says a breathless Susan, 46, glammed up in an original 50s dress.

She has fully embraced the happy homemaker attitude of the 1950s. Her whiz-bang Sunbeam Mixmaster has her cooking up cupcakes faster than you can say Betty Crocker, and her nifty little Victor mower sees her lawns perfectly manicured in minutes.

Ladies man Connor Cruise

Ladies man Connor Cruise

Tom Cruise has a new mission impossible – controlling his son’s love life.

He’s a handsome budding actor who has women falling at his feet. Nothing unusual in that – except the young man in question is 15 years old and his dad is Tom Cruise.

Sources close to the star tell us Connor Cruise is driving his famously controlling father crazy with his amorous antics. While he used to be a shy, reserved kid, in the past year he’s reportedly hit a hormonal stage and has turned into a “teen terror”.

“All he can think about is girls, girls, girls,” our insider says. “He’s always flirting on the internet, where he’s amassed hundreds of female fans. His male friends refer to him as ‘Cool Connor’ because he’s become so good at sweet-talking the ladies.”

Tom, 48, was clueless about Connor’s conversion from wallflower to playboy until he saw his son in action at the New York premiere of wife Katie Holmes’ film, The Romantics, on September 7.

While Tom was working the room at the after-party, Connor was getting numbers from much older women. A witness reports, “Tom flipped out when he saw Connor standing by the bar in a sea of scantily clad women, with his arm around one who appeared to be in her late thirties.”

Eva Longoria’s marriage split

Eva Longoria's marriage split

Desperate Housewives darling Eva Longoria Parker could be headed for the divorce courts following reports her husband of three years has been unfaithful..

On screen, her colourful love-life is often complicated – and always eventful. But in real life, it looked as though Eva Longoria Parker had it sussed. Married for three years to hunky French basketball pro Tony, the 35-year-old actress seemed to be one of the lucky ones, with a stable marriage, successful career and scandal-free life.

But last week it all changed. The same week reports surfaced in a US magazine that Tony had been unfaithful, the diminutive star was forced to issue a statement denying her husband of three years had filed divorce papers in a Texas court.

The extraordinary announcement came on Tuesday last week, the day after gossip website TMZ claimed her marriage was on the rocks and that Tony, 28, was in the process of applying for a termination of their union.

The same week, Us Weekly magazine also reported that things weren’t looking good, claiming Eva was left devastated earlier this month after discovering Tony had been exchanging personal texts with a mutual female friend for almost a year.

According to People magazine, Eva was “blindsided” when the reports made their way to the press – and totally heartbroken. “She’s inconsolable,” their source says. “Eva truly thought she was going to grow old with Tony and have children with him.”

Royal reporter Judy Wade: William’s wedding will be the best yet!

Royal reporter Judy Wade says William and Kate's wedding will be the best yet!

Royal reporter Judy Wade has covered decades of royal marriages.

Every royal wedding is a fairytale but Kate and William’s ceremony promises to be even more magical than most because it will lift our spirits during this economic downturn.

The day Catherine Elizabeth Middleton becomes a princess will have to be a dazzling event if it is to match up to that of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer.

As a royal correspondent, I was lucky enough to have a ticket and sat closer to the bride than the end of her 24ft train. We all sighed when we spotted Diana’s creased dress. Looking back it now seems a bad omen, just like the way she muffed her vows, promising to wed “Philip Charles” instead of “Charles Philip”.

There were no unfortunate slip-ups at the wedding of Fergie and Andrew five years later, which took place at Westminster Abbey. The bride arrived like a country girl with a wreath of flowers in her hair and walked out an hour later as a royal duchess with a tiara on her head.

That ceremony was memorable to me for the wonderful perfume of the white flowers which filled every corner of the Abbey.

Shane Warne: I will always love Simone

Shane Warne: I will always love Simone

Things on the home front are better than ever for the cricket great.

Shane Warne’s relationship with his sometime-wife Simone Callahan has raised eyebrows for years, but after plenty of public mistakes the cricket champion now insists he is a reformed family man.

The couple have reached an understanding about their complex but enduring two-decade partnership – with Shane, 41, insisting he will always love the woman he married in 1995.

“My family life is good,” Shane tells Woman’s Day. On the cusp of a new TV career as host of his own show, Warnie, the retired sports idol has made his partner his other priority.

“We’ll always love each other, we’ll always be best mates and who knows what the future holds for the both of us?” Shane has said in an interview with Melbourne’s Herald Sun newspaper.

“Simone is a wonderful person and together we try to be the best parents we can. She’s always been a great mother. She’s had to go through a lot, and I wasn’t the greatest husband, but I’ve always been a great dad.” Shane can’t remember the last time he hit the town with his mates, and life with the spin king couldn’t be sweeter for Simone, 40, and their children, Brooke 13, Jackson, 11, and Summer, 8.
