True Confessions Agony Aunt: My abortion turmoil and my sister

Woman suffering

Woman suffering

My sister told me she can’t have children just weeks after I had an abortion and now I’m in turmoil.

Trying to support my heartbroken sister and cope with my own feelings of guilt and loss has left me ill, but when I first made the decision I thought it was the right one.

I’ve never wanted children and the boyfriend I had was a total lightweight, but a lot of fun. I got pregnant completely by accident and my doctor still doesn’t know how it happened because I never missed a pill, was never sick or had a stomach upset.

I couldn’t believe it at first and when I told my boyfriend he nearly hit the road there and then so I knew he had no interest in a baby.

In the end I had an abortion and told him I hadn’t been pregnant after all because I didn’t want him telling anyone else.

Then my sister turned up in floods. She and her husband had been trying to have a baby for six years and have now been told it’s practically impossible that she will conceive.

They’ve tried various procedures but apparently now there’s no hope of conceiving naturally. They’ve spent thousands of dollars trying to conceive and have nearly bankrupted themselves, so they have to give up, with nothing to show for it.

I feel so guilty – I can barely look at her because I do actually feel quite bad about the abortion although I didn’t think I would.

If she had even told me a few weeks ago I could maybe have had the baby and she could have adopted it and I keep wondering if I should suggest having a baby for her, though I could never tell her about the abortion.

You made your decision based on your own circumstances and while it seems tragically unfair that you ended up pregnant when you didn’t want to and didn’t plan to, that doesn’t affect your sister’s situation at all, other than how you cope with it.

This is not the time to be considering having a baby for her, if ever, not least because you are still so sad over what happened to you.

You have to be very brave in dealing with her and try to put the abortion out of your mind, which is not easy. Your sister could still adopt or foster a child but at present she has to come to terms with the fact that she might never get pregnant.

While she is grieving over this you are grieving over your abortion which is made harder by being unable to share it with her or anyone else. It could help if you go back to your doctor or the clinic and ask for counselling; if nothing else you will at least be able to talk to someone about how you feel and also tell them how much worse it is because of your sister’s experience.

They won’t judge you because if nothing else, they do know that an abortion is not something many people could opt for lightly and they recognise that no matter what your reasons, you are still suffering and could be for some time.

If you can accept that you need help to get over your situation then you might find it a little easier to offer support to your sister but do not rush into any decisions at all on her behalf – simply be there for her and don’t neglect your own needs.

Prince Harry hook-up with Real Housewives star?

Getty

It’s not exactly a likely match, but did Prince harry have a fling with Catherine Ommanney, one of the The Real Housewives of D.C?

Well, the 39-year-old year old reality TV star has shared the story of their private rendezvous before, but now her former nanny has come forward to confirm her story, Radar Online reports.

The nanny claims that Prince Harry would send a car or limo for Catherine, so that the two could meet up.

She also claims that Catherine showed her a series of intimate text messages sent between herself and the Prince saying that he wanted to “travel the world” with her.

The series of hook-ups is said to have occurred when Catherine and her family were living in London in 2007 and she was doing interior design work for him. However as time passed the couple grew closer and began seeing each other.

Catherine, who is 13 years older than Prince Harry, has shared this story before saying, “He was holding me off the floor, kissing me. I was absolutely speechless. I was against the wall, and he literally lifted me off the floor and gave me a lovely kiss which I was stunned by. It was a lovely kiss… Afterwards I didn’t say anything. I was genuinely, completely blown away.”

Catherine is reportedly writing a book detailing her “racy” escapades while living in London called Inbox Full.

Fuller lips without surgery

Thinkstock

Question

I want to get fuller lips but I don’t want to have surgery. Is there anything I can do?

Jackie, via e-mail

Answer

There are two ways to create the appearance of plump, full lips. Firstly, over the top of your normal lipstick, try dabbing a bit of gloss on the centre of the upper and lower lips to create the illusion of fullness.

Or alternatively you can try a lip-plumping product that contain stimulants such as cinnamon or capsicum oil, or the latest Maxi-lip technology, which is made from collagen and sits under the epidermis, trapping moisture and improving the fullness of the lip.

Buying grains

Choosing wholegrain foods is an important part of eating a balanced diet, so we’ve got some tips for you below for tasty, economical ways to help you include them in your diet.

  • Choose plain brown rice, rather than pre-cooked as it is significantly cheaper. Brown rice is filling, but often children don’t like it, so long-grain rice is another great option — it is low-GI, so gives you longer lasting energy. When preparing brown rice, cover it with water and soak it in the fridge while at work. It then takes less time to cook and is softer to eat. Or, blend long-grain and brown rice together, to get a wholegrain mix.

  • When purchasing flour or rice buy in bulk if you have somewhere to store it. Just check that the price is cheaper, it generally is. Keep in sealed containers in your pantry or freezer so that they last.

  • Try to purchase wholegrain or wholemeal breads, as they are more filling, and so you usually will need to eat fewer slices to end up feeling satisfied! Also, try a no-knead bread recipe to make your own — involve the children — so that they will be more likely to eat it! You could try using one slice of white and one slice of wholemeal in a sandwich, to get the family to eat more wholegrains.

  • Oats are nutritious, economical and can be dressed up with fruit to make a great breakfast — also they are a healthy base to crumbles and other baking.

  • Choose wholegrain breakfast cereals, they are filling and so will last longer. Weet-Bix is a really nutritious and cheap breakfast, which costs about $0.09 per biscuit — what a cheap breakfast. It is also a great alternative to breadcrumbs, and can be used in baking. Mix different cereals together, for example, puffed rice with some muesli — to add variety, fibre and wholegrains. This is a useful option for making expensive cereals last that little but longer.

  • Pasta is an economical food, which many children enjoy — even though it is made from white flour. Choose a topping that has heaps of vegetables, this will turn pasta into a very nutritious meal — full of nutrients and fibre. There are some wholegrain pastas available, but they are quite difficult to find and often are a bit more expensive. Maybe mix wholegrain pasta with white flour pasta, and you can have a much healthier pasta option. This information is provided by the Sanitarium Nutrition Service.

Amidst the media circus Liz has found a friendly shoulder to cry on, that of ex-boyfriend Hugh Grant.

Still good friends, it was no shock that Grant was on hand to comfort Hurley. The two spent a few hours at Hurley’s west London home on Wednesday.

Hurley and Grant dated for eight years before Hugh had a run-in with the law in Los Angeles. The relationship ended two years later.

It has been a tough week for the glamorous supermodel who has faced a barrage of criticism from the unforgiving British press. She is no doubt thankful for the support from the Love Actually star.

Hurley announced via Twitter this week that she had split from husband, Indian tycoon Arun Nayar. “For the record, my husband Arun & I separated a few months ago. Our close family & friends were aware of this.”

Warne also released a statement to clarify his relationship status with Simone Callahan. The couple have been on-again-off-again since their divorce in 2005 and then reconciliation. “Sadly and unfortunately, Simone and I split up a while ago, our close friends and family were informed at that time. It is a private matter so we did not make it public. We remain friends and will continue to be good parents.”

There are rumours circulating that Liz will join Shane in Sydney for New Year’s Eve celebrations.

Amazing stunt family: We’re all in on the act!

Amazing stunt family: We're all in on the act!

Most families get together over the dinner table or spend as much time as they can hanging out at the beach.

But for the Stannages, their bonding time is a little more active. This adrenalin-fuelled family’s idea of fun is setting each other alight and jumping over cars on motorbikes.

“Obviously there is a risk involved, but who better to trust than your husband or your son?” laughs mum Janine, 40, who is regularly set on fire by her nearest and dearest.

Dad Mark, 43, has been involved in stunt work since he was 14, after being influenced by stunt greats Evel Knievel and Eddie Kidd. But getting married and having a family didn’t stop this man of action from putting himself in the line of fire. In fact, he was running through a blazing rugby field for a stunt show when he first caught Janine’s eye.

“I saw him and I thought he must be a nutter,” she says. “But it didn’t stop me falling for him and we’ve been married for 13 years.”

Janine did the commentary on Mark’s stunts at first, then decided to join the action and get involved in high-risk acts too. When they had their son Aaron, now 15, it was inevitable he’d also become an adrenalin junkie.

Oprah’s amazing Aussie diet!

Oprah's amazing Aussie diet!

She’s battled her weight for years but now she’s finally ready to tell Australia about the only diet she swears by.

For more than 20 years, Oprah Winfrey has endured a very public battle with her weight, going from skinny to curvy and back again in the space of a few short months.

“In 1988 I starved myself to fit into a pair of jeans,” she says in the latest issue of O magazine, “then walked on to the set of my show hauling a wagon loaded down with 67 pounds (about 30kg] of fat. I wanted to make clear just how much weight I’d lost. As time passed, though, the fat came back. By 1992 I was in the heart of the struggle to gain control of my body.”

That struggle lasted more than a decade, but over the past two years the talk-show host has made peace with her body.

“I’m no longer battling my weight,” Oprah, 56, says. “I had to make peace to move forward and look at the fear that keeps showing up as fat. My goal isn’t to be thin. My goal is for my body to be the weight it can hold – to be strong and healthy and fit, to be itself. My goal is to learn to embrace this body and to be grateful every day for what it has given me.”

Now that Oprah has hit Australian shores, she’s about to reveal exactly how she learned to maintain a healthy weight and finally love her body. During one of her shows at the Sydney Opera House, she will talk about the book she believes has finally helped her deal with her weight-loss demons. A Course In Weight Loss by Marianne Williamson (Hay House, $19.95) is, she believes, “the miracle we’ve been waiting for”.
