NZ Mine tragedy widow: “I’ll stay strong for our baby”

NZ Mine tragedy widow: "I'll stay strong for our baby"

The pregnant partner of an Aussie who died in the New Zealand mine explosion says their baby will never forget Dad.

Each night, Rachelle Weaver dreams of the happiness she shared with her soul mate Josh Ufer. The touch of his skin, the smell of his hair and the warmth of his strong hands softly stroking her growing belly.

“For a few precious moments I imagine Josh is by my side and that everything is OK,” says Rachelle, 23, wiping away tears. “But by morning, sadness fills my heart, knowing I will never see him again and that he will never get the chance to hold our gorgeous baby.”

Josh, from Charters Towers in north Queensland, was one of the 29 miners buried in New Zealand’s Pike River mine disaster last November – and Rachelle, who has lived in the close-knit nearby community of Greymouth on the country’s South Island since she was 13, is still struggling to cope with the loss.

“I loved him so much,” says five months pregnant Rachelle, speaking exclusively to Woman’s Day. “I’d planned to surprise him with a marriage proposal on January 10 – it would have been his 26th birthday.

“I was going to pop the question over dinner at a jazz cafe in Greymouth. Josh had endured two broken engagements and vowed he wouldn’t ask again. So he said it would be left to me to ask. I couldn’t think of a more kind-hearted, loyal and loving person to spend the rest of my life with.” A week before the blast, Rachelle had a series of nightmares that Josh was going to die in a car accident.

Tom and Katie: Can Suri save them?

Tom and Katie: Can Suri save them?

The cute tot could stop Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes from separating.

The tension between Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes is clear to see as they share afternoon tea with their daughter at the Palm Court in New York’s Plaza Hotel.

Sitting as far apart from her husband as possible, with a pillow placed trategically between them, Katie looks miserable, sipping on a diet cola with lemon, while Tom grins as he showers four-year-old Suri with kisses and cuddles.

“Katie looked as though she wasn’t part of the fun,” says a witness. “She stared into space and must have been wondering what the future holds for them.”

It’s obvious Suri is Tom’s number-one girl and he’d do anything to make her happy – and that includes staying in a marriage under strain. Tom, 48, and Katie, 32, reportedly began drifting apart last year after living for months in different countries for their movie projects.

While Tom was filming Mission: Impossible, Suri missed him very much and was constantly asking her mother, “Why isn’t Daddy home?”

Hugh Jackman: Why I'm moving home to Australia

The Aussie star wants to bring his family back home.

He took America by storm as The Boy From Oz, and now Hugh Jackman is keen to move back to his homeland with his family.

While Hugh, wife Deborra-lee Furness and their children, Oscar, 10, and Ava, 5, have made the most of life in the Big Apple – enjoying Broadway shows and playing in the snow in equal measures – he’s said to be eager to trade off the icy city for the warmth of the Aussie countryside.

Instead of returning to his old Sydney haunts, the 42-year-old Wolverine star is scouring the leafy Mornington Peninsula suburb of Mount Eliza, south-east of Melbourne, for his new home. Hugh and Deborra-lee are determined, according to insiders, to give their children the best possible upbringing.

“They want a good environment for the children and to be close to family and friends,” one insider tells Woman’s Day. “They are a lovely couple with family in Melbourne. Education for their children is another reason they are looking at places there.”

And it seems the couple’s resolve was only strengthened after spending the festive season with family here. “Do you know what my kids want for Christmas?” Deborra-lee, 56, recently told reporters of their trip home. “To convince Mum and Dad to live in Melbourne.”

Olivia Newton John: I’m going to be a grandmother!

Olivia Newton John: I'm going to be a Grandmother!

Chloe Lattanzi is getting married – and her famous mum Olivia Newton-John is thrilled about finally getting to be a grandmother.

There were times in Chloe Lattanzi’s life when many people weren’t sure there would be a happy ending for the daughter of Australian showbiz icon Olivia Newton-John. A veritable wild child who’s lived on the edge – from her battle with anorexia to an encounter with a ferocious brown bear – Chloe, 24, has come through many dark moments in her life.

“Olivia and I were told by a psychic that our firstborn would challenge us,” says her dad, Olivia’s first husband Matt Lattanzi. “That psychic was right on! She has challenged us in many different ways.”

So there was barely a dry eye at the ritzy Fairmont Miramar Hotel & Bungalows in Santa Monica when Chloe’s engagement to martial arts expert James Driskill, 27, was made official, one year since she laid eyes on him. Tiki torches and fuchsia orchids created an exotic tropical atmosphere for an intimate gathering of family and friends, which Woman’s Day was privileged to attend.

Amid champagne toasts, Olivia, 62, Matt, 51, Olivia’s husband John Easterling, 58, and James and Chloe shared stories that were filled with love and laughter – and Olivia was excited about finally becoming a grandmother.

“He’s wonderful and I’m thrilled and excited for Chloe,” she says. “It’s a wonderful time and I look forward to lots of babies. I wish Chloe the love and happiness that I’ve experienced marrying my gorgeous husband. She has grown because of James’s love for her.”
