Pauline Hanson’s kids reveal: ‘Mum is so embarrassing!’

Pauline Hanson's kids reveal: 'Mum is so embarrassing!'

Pauline Hanson’s most ardent followers, her children, reveal that behind the passionate politician is a fun-loving mum who makes them cringe with her karaoke.

But it isn’t the fiery redhead’s outspoken politics and controversial persona that leave her four kids cringing. Instead, the 56-year-old former fish-and-chip shop owner reveals they turn decidedly red-faced when she takes centre stage for less-political purposes.

“There was one time when we were at an Irish pub on the Sunshine Coast and we were with some friends who wanted me to get up for karaoke,” Pauline tells Woman’s Day. “I had no choice in the end because they announced me and everyone else at the pub was like, ‘Yes, let’s get Pauline Hanson up’ – so I had to do it. But afterwards, [my daughter] Lee said, ‘I was just so embarrassed, I was sitting there thinking, Oh, my mum, what’s she doing up there?’. “I didn’t even know the song at the time,” Pauline adds. “It was the Tina Turner song, Nut Bush Cracker… what is it?… Nutbush City Limits? See, I still don’t know!”

There’s a collective groan from Pauline’s children – sons Tony Zagorski and Steven Hanson, to her first husband Walter Zagorski, and son Adam and daughter Lee, to second husband Mark Hanson – as they relive the memory. According to Lee, 27, music and her mum can often be an embarrassing combination, and never more so than during her twirl on TV’s Dancing With The Stars in 2004.

“I remember Mum getting up and attempting to dance on live TV and me sitting there going, ‘Aww, no! Aww, no, Mum!’” she says. “When she’d get off she’d ask, ‘How did I do?’. I’d say, ‘Oh, you did really well’, but I’d be thinking, Don’t get up there and dance again next week. So of course she made it all the way through to the final!

Rebecca Gibney reveals: ‘I finally feel beautiful’

Rebecca Gibney reveals: 'I finally feel beautiful'

The TV favourite opens up about a deeply personal battle which once saw her plunge into despair.

Whenever friends phoned to inquire what she was up to, the consummate performer found herself doing what she could do best – acting through the pain. And certainly no-one would have been aware Rebecca could head out the front door, her perfect “mask” firmly in place, only after taking a Valium pill.

Some 15 years later, the happily married mother-of-one has revealed to Mindfood magazine she is now in a very different head space. At 46, having tackled her private demons and memories of a profoundly traumatic childhood, the Packed To The Rafters favourite has found a new level of contentment – an emotional equilibrium she once never thought possible.

Although Rebecca does still suffer from the occasional panic attack, she knows what to do when they strike. As for the bouts of depression, they appear to be well and truly in her past. Through it all, the beautiful blonde has learned not to take anything in life for granted.

“When you’re in a black hole, when you’ve been in the pit, you don’t want to go back there. And I’m so glad that rage is gone… that intense rage,” Rebecca reveals during a stunning photo shoot for this month’s issue of Mindfood.

Kate Middleton’s bridal body blitz!

Kate Middleton's bridal body blitz!

The bride-to-be has dropped three dress sizes in preparation for the big day!

According to royal watchers, Kate has gone from an estimated size 12 at the time of her engagement announcement in November, to a petite size 8. Although these never-seen photos were taken in 2006, Kate’s friends say she’s looking every bit as sizzling hot as she did on this Ibiza holiday with Prince William.

“Kate has a fantastic figure,” says a friend. “It’s part genetics,” adds another, Bean Sopwith. It’s also thanks to a bridal boot camp that’s seen her revamp her diet and embark on regular exercise sessions.

The hard work is paying off – during a recent charity event, housewife Heather Lindsay couldn’t help but comment to Kate about her weight-loss.

“I told her not to lose any more weight,” Heather told a British paper. “And she said it was all part of the wedding plan.” According to insiders, Kate’s been trying a variety of workouts, as well as hitting her home equipment, which – like the late Princess Diana – she had installed to avoid photographs of her being taken in workout gear at a gym.

Mug featuring Prince HARRY and Kate Middleton launched

Mug featuring Prince HARRY and Kate Middleton launched

A souvenir company has made what could be an embarrassing gaffe, releasing a royal wedding mug featuring pictures of Kate Middleton and Prince Harry.

Guandong Enterprises launched the cup to commemorate the wedding of Prince William and Kate, but used an image of William’s younger brother Prince Harry.

In pictures: Most amazing royal wedding dresses

The mug, which is purportedly crafted from the “finest bone china”, is advertised as “limited edition heirloom”.

“Commemorate the wedding of HRH Prince William and his stunning lady bride-to-be Miss Kate Middleton,” the company’s website reads.

While media outlets around the world are taking delight in the possible faux pas, the UK’s Daily Telegraph has looked into the mugs and suggests they might be part of an “elaborate spoof”. The paper reports that while Guandong Enterprises presents itself as a Chinese company, its website is “apparently registered in Britain”.

Whether the mug is a genuine mistake or an expensive practical joke, one can be yours for $15 plus shipping.

Meanwhile, Prince William has attended a national memorial service for the 182 victims of the Christchurch earthquake.

The royal passed on condolences from his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II and father Prince Charles at the ceremony, urging New Zealanders to “be strong”.

“Put simply, you are an inspiration to all people,” he said.

William arrived in New Zealand yesterday, and spent the afternoon meeting the families of the 29 victims of last year’s Pike River coal mine disaster.

He then flew to Christchurch to visit areas damaged by the earthquake and will fly to Australia to tour flood-ravaged towns in Queensland and Victoria tomorrow.

William is due to marry Kate Middleton in London’s Westminster Abbey on April 29. Earlier this week, the couple announced they wanted charity donations instead of wedding gifts. The Christchurch Earthquake Appeal is one of a list of charities the couple have chosen to include in their Royal Wedding Charitable Gift Fund.

How to win the savings battle

Is something always getting in the way of you and your saving efforts? Two words, term deposit.
Friends shopping for shoes, thinkstock

THE number-one enemy of saving is temptation, and something that can take temptation out of the equation is a term deposit. These high interest investments allow you to lock away a lump sum of money, which gathers interest for a fixed time period. This means that before you get your investment back, you’ll know exactly how much your term deposit can earn for you.

Term deposits shake up the mentality that you must save periodically to reach your goals, squirreling away spare cash in a savings account every week. Instead, term deposits are useful for people who enjoy having a low-maintenance savings product that they can rely on to deliver results.

For example, putting away $5000 in a 90-day term deposit will guarantee you about $73 in interest at maturity with RateCity’s best rate of 5.80 percent by ME Bank, no matter how much interest rates change after you deposit your money. While this gives you a lucky break when rates are declining, it also means you may miss out on rate rises.

You can even have multiple term deposits growing your money at the same time. Savvy savers can use this method to save for the short term, or even keep cash earning interest for years to meet your long-term savings goals.

And if you’re the impulsive type, term deposits give you an incentive to kick bad habits by charging interest rate penalties or fees when you withdraw your money early. This is why it’s important to make sure that your term deposit cash is something you can live without until you get it back.

Often competing with online savings accounts, term deposits can sometimes offer rates that you simply can’t pass up, so use your impulsive tendencies for good by comparing the highest rates and securing your investment.

After all, everyone indulges in buying themselves a present here and there, so why not make your next gift a savings miracle by letting your money take care of your future?

Why the bullying video shocked the world

Why the bullying video shocked the world

An overweight 12-year-old boy from Sydney’s western suburbs became an international sensation this week, when a video of him lashing out at a school bully went ‘viral’ online.

The boy, known only as ‘Casey’, is the unwitting star of the clip that was filmed on a mobile phone in the grounds of Chifley College’s Dunheved campus, north of St Marys.

Related: The stars who beat bullying

Casey is seen backed up against a wall, while a smaller bully punches him and taunts him until Casey snaps, picking up his tormentor and throwing him on the ground.

Another boy filmed the attack and uploaded it onto the internet. It has since been viewed by millions of people and has appeared on chat shows and news broadcasts all over the world.

Related: A parent’s guide to bullying

Casey, who has reportedly been suffering at the hands of bullies for years, has been branded a hero, while the bully has become a laughing stock. Both boys have been suspended from school for four days.

While many people find this incident funny, it also highlights some alarming points:

  • That bullying is still happening in 2011;

  • That kids are videoing it;

  • That the video was uploaded onto the internet;

  • That millions of people are watching that video online;

  • That it went on to be shown in news broadcasts in the UK and US;

  • That the child who fought back, injuring his tormentor, has been hailed as a hero with Facebook tribute pages in his honour;

  • That the school did nothing to stop this child being bullied for years and;

  • That the school is powerless to stop students bringing mobile phones to school to film such incidents.

Your say: Which of these do you find most disturbing?

How vacuuming can help you lose weight

How vacuuming can help you lose weight

Did you know that doing the housework, walking around the supermarket and even getting up to change the channel on the television all burn kilojoules? These everyday activities are examples of “incidental exercise”, which is any physical activity that is part of your daily routine.

Incorporating more incidental exercise into your daily routine is one of the easiest ways to improve your overall general health and fitness. So if you find it hard to fit in the recommended 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week, try increasing your incidental exercise. And remember, it all adds up to a healthier you!

In pictures: Ten gym habits that are holding you back

How to increase your incidental exercise

  • Instead of looking for the closest car park to the shops, be content to park further away. Not only will you find it easier to get a park, you will also get in a few minutes extra walking to and from the car.

  • Leave the car behind if you’re only going a short distance. Most people can walk 1km to 2km quite easily.

  • Go to the park and play with your kids after school. Either push them on the swings (good for upper-body strengthening), play tag or throw around a ball.

  • Get enthusiastic about the housework. Turn on some music and have a dance around the house while you are vacuuming or sweeping.

  • Dig around in the garden, weed and mow the lawn on the weekend.

  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator in shopping malls, or walk up and down the escalators rather than waiting for them to deliver you to the next shopping level.

  • Get up to change the channel on the television or the volume on your stereo, rather than using the remote.

World’s first unretouched beauty ad launched

World's first unretouched beauty ad launched

A French make-up company has published the world’s first unretouched beauty ad.

The campaign for Make Up For Ever’s new foundation appeared in US magazines this week, and marks a refreshing change from the usual flawlessly airbrushed images.

In pictures: Beauties who have banned airbrushing

The ad features a natural-looking model holding up a camera to take a photo of herself. While the model’s complexion is unblemished and shine-free, there is a distinctly natural feel to the image, which has been certified as 100 percent unaltered by a French notary.

The cosmetics firm decided to release an unretouched image to prove its new HD Invisible Cover range was effective, but industry experts believe it is part of a wider move to more natural images.

The Weekly made headlines in 2009 when we published an unedited image of Sarah Murdoch on the cover of our November issue.

In the magazine, Sarah spoke out against photoshopping and said she wished women could just grow old gracefully.

“I think when I’m retouched in photographs it’s worse, because when people see me in real life they go, ‘Oh God, isn’t she old?’,” Sarah said last year.

“It makes me mad that we can’t embrace the beauty of ageing, because we’re all going to do it.”

Sarah agreed to allow the unretouched image to be published after the Weekly‘s editor Helen McCabe suggested it would ease the former model’s fears about looking unnatural.

While it marked a coup for the magazine industry in Australia, Helen said she couldn’t promise future covers wouldn’t be airbrushed.

“I can’t possibly commit to that, I’m a realist,” she said at the time. “There are real business imperatives why magazines have gone this way. It’s a very competitive industry and I’m — at this stage — just taking a little baby step and seeing how this goes for now.”

In pictures: Airbrushed stars before and after

After Sarah’s shoot, several other celebrities followed suit, permitting untouched images to be published. Claudia Schiffer, Jennifer Hawkins, Britney Spears, Jessica Simpson, Marion Cotillard and Sadie Frost have all proudly displayed their beauty au natural in magazines all over the world.
