Anneliese Seubert on Linda Evangelista and looking stylish after 30

Anneliese Seubert on Linda Evangelista and looking stylish after 30

Australian supermodel Anneliese Seubert in the new QVB Autumn/Winter campaign

Anneliese Seubert was a 15-year-old schoolgirl living in Cooma when she gave in to her friend’s nagging and entered a magazine modelling contest in 1989.

Just two years later she was strutting the catwalks of Paris, New York and Milan for some of the world’s top designers including Christian Dior, Karl Lagerfeld, Givenchy and Calvin Klein.

In pictures: Ten ways to look younger instantly

The German-born beauty quickly became one of Australia’s first international supermodels, appearing in Vogue editorials in the UK, Italy, Germany and Australia and working with the renowned fashion photographers including Mario Testino and Patrick Demarchelier.

Anneliese can now be seen in Sydney’s Queen Victoria Building’s Autumn/Winter campaign and here, she discusses dressing for your age, working in castles and meeting Linda Evangelista.

On being ‘discovered’:

“I was a finalist in a DOLLY cover girl contest in 1989. A girl at my school had won it the year before and my friends encouraged me to enter it. I didn’t win, though! It was one of the very first of those competitions and the public voted for a girl from New Zealand. The agency had rights to represent all the finalists and so they asked me if I wanted to join them, so I did.”

On balancing her studies and modelling:

“I was still at school so I was a bit limited in what I could do because I wanted to stay at school. So I would take a few days off here and there, or I would work in the school holidays. Whenever a job came up I either could do it or I couldn’t. If I had exams I had to say no!”

On meeting ’90s supermodel Linda Evangelista:

“When I first met Linda Evangelista, she told me she thought I was really pretty and I was like ‘Oh my God, Linda just told me I was pretty!’ That did freak me out a little bit.”

On working with embattled designer John Galliano:

“My favourite jobs were always working with John Galliano, but we’re not really allowed to talk about him at the moment [John was dismissed from Christian Dior in March after an alleged anti-Semitic tirade at a Paris bar]. The best jobs are usually great trips where you travel to some amazing place. Quite often with a job you get access to beautiful houses, or sometimes even a castle, that you wouldn’t normally get to see. That’s always fun.”

On why modelling isn’t always as glamorous as people might think:

“Once you’re all made up and ready to go it’s glamorous, but there’s a lot of work to get to that stage. Usually we start at four or five in the morning, and at that hour, it’s definitely not glamorous.”

On being constantly scrutinised:

“People get quite obsessed with what you look like and you think, ‘But you don’t even know me!’ Or if you’re shooting on the street and there’s a whole lot of people around, watching you, that is very bizarre.

On looking stylish past your 30th birthday:

“I think you should always wear things that suit you and that make you feel good. I certainly don’t follow the latest trend just because it’s a trend. If it doesn’t suit me I certainly won’t go with it. I think that accessories are a good way to update your look without having to be a slave to the looks that the teenagers are going for.”

On her own sense of style:

“Being a model, I have access to great designers and obviously I’ve owned some beautiful clothes but I don’t really wear them in everyday life. My style has always been quite classic and understated and that doesn’t change unless I’m in front of the camera.”

Anneliese is the face of the Queen Victoria Building’s Autumn/Winter campaign The Art of Life.

Food for healthy eyes

Food for healthy eyes

Thinkstock

You may have heard that carrots help you see in the dark, but is this just an old wives’ tale? What other foods will help maintain good eyesight throughout your life?

Vitamin A

Carrots are a good source of betacarotene, which the body converts to vitamin A. Vitamin A has long been associated with vision and night-blindness is one of the first signs of vitamin A deficiency. Many causes of blindness in children in Third World countries are due to vitamin A deficiency.

In pictures: The best budget recipes

Good sources of betacarotene and vitamin A include: carrots, spinach, pumpkin, egg yolks and apricots.

Important note: Very high levels of vitamin A can be dangerous. Amounts consumed in the diet are safe. It is best to avoid taking vitamin A supplements unless under medical supervision.

Antioxidants

Antioxidants are the broad name given to the hundreds of nutrients found in foods that have beneficial effects for our body.

Many studies have shown that certain antioxidants decrease the potential for oxidative stress in the retina, reducing the likelihood of developing cataracts or other degenerative changes. Of particular interest are the antioxidants lutein and zeaxanthin, which are also part of the carotenoid family.

Lutein and zeaxanthin are found in the macula at the rear of the eye. Low dietary intake of these antioxidants has been linked to age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a disorder that affects the macula and is the biggest cause of blindness of the older population in New Zealand, for example.

Good sources of lutein and zeaxanthin include: egg yolks, corn, orange capsicum, spinach, kiwifruit, courgette, broccoli and peas.

Important note: Antioxidants are found in all fruit and vegetables but the types and quantity vary. It is therefore important to eat a variety of fruit and vegetables every day.

Omega-3

There are two main types of omega-3 fats, which are believed to have an effect on vision. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) plays an essential role in the formation of the brain and retina and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) has been shown to reduce inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. AMD has an inflammatory component and by reducing this inflammatory response and regulating the immune response in the retina the risk of developing AMD can be reduced.

Good sources of omega-3 include: fatty fish such as salmon, sardines or tuna are high sources of DHA and EPA; and flaxseed oil (linseed), walnuts and eggs contain aplha-linolenic acid (ALA), which can be converted in the body to DHA and EPA. If you don’t like fish, you can always try an omega-3 supplement.

Important note: Studies have shown that omega-3 has a protective effect for AMD; however this can be reduced by high levels of omega-6. Omega-6 is a polyunsaturated fat, such as soybean, rapeseed and sunflower oil, which are found in most processed foods and many plant oils. Try to reduce the intake of these to get the most benefit from your omega-3.

Other common causes of eye disease

Sunlight exposure: Regular exposure to bright sunlight can cause cataracts in later life. Wearing sunglasses will help reduce the glare and provide protection.

Smoking: Smoking is linked to increased oxidative stress, platelet clumping and reduced antioxidants and HDL (good cholesterol) levels. As such, blood flow to the choroid (the membrane that covers the eyeball which supplies blood to the retina) may be reduced.

High blood pressure: The blood vessels in your eyes are very fine and may be damaged by the additional pressure your blood is pumped at when your blood pressure is high. Have your blood pressure checked and if it is high follow your doctor’s advice.

New photo of Prince William and Kate Middleton released

New photo of Prince William and Kate Middleton released

Catherine Middleton & Prince William Portraits by Mario Testino/Art Partner/Snapper Media

A new black and white photograph of Prince William and Kate Middleton has been released 24 hours before their wedding.

The casual image was taken by renowned photographer Mario Testino and appears in the couple’s official wedding program.

In pictures: Kate Middleton’s family photos

The program includes a full order of service and a message from the couple expressing their delight at the public reaction to their engagement.

“We are both so delighted that you are able to join us in celebrating what we hope will be one of the happiest days of our lives,” the message reads.

“The affection shown to us by so many people during our engagement has been incredibly moving, and has touched us both deeply.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone most sincerely for their kindness.”

The order of service also revealed Kate will not vow to “obey” William, as is traditional, instead promising to “love, comfort, honour and keep” him. William’s mother Diana also refused to include the word “obey” in her wedding vows in 1981.

William and Kate’s choice of music has also been unveiled. The couple have favoured classical pieces, including tunes by Elgar, Britten and Vaughan Williams.

Kate will walk up the aisle to ‘I was glad’, a song written for the coronation of Prince William’s great-great-great grandfather Edward VII at Westminster Abbey in 1902. William and his new bride will leave the abbey to the sounds of ‘Crown Imperial’, a well-known wedding march which was also played at Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s wedding.

English ditty ‘Greensleeves’ will also be played during the ceremony.

Kate’s request: ‘William must recognise me at the altar’

Getty

The royal wedding is almost upon us and as it draws closer more attention is being paid to one of Kate Middleton’s most stunning qualities — her hair.

Known for her glowing locks, which she almost always wears down, Kate has only given one request for her hair on the big day, the UK’s Daily Mail has reported.

“The one rule is by the time she gets to the end of the altar her husband must recognise her,” Kate’s hairstylist Richard Ward said.

Richard, who has been Kate’s hairdresser for the past eight years, is also responsible Kate’s mum Carole Middleton and sister Pippa Middleton’s hair.

He says the trio has been in to the salon for a number of dress rehearsals in preparation for the big day.

Apart from saying Kate will opt for a “natural” look, Richard did not disclose any other information about the wedding dress or the big day.

He and his stylist James Pryce will join Kate’s team of dressers who will assist her in getting ready at the Goring Hotel in Belgravia, close to Buckingham Palace, on the morning of the wedding.

Having known Kate for eight years, Richard says the reality of becoming a royal hasn’t changed her.

“She’s absolutely gorgeous and she’s a lot of fun,” he said. “She jokes around like everyone else, she feels very comfortable coming into the salon.

“She hasn’t changed, she’s just become more assured. She’s caring, honest and good, and I haven’t seen anything that will change that.”

Catherine Zeta-Jones ‘outed’ by other rehab patients

Catherine Zeta-Jones 'outed' by other rehab patients

Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas

Catherine Zeta-Jones was forced to admit to her mental illness after she was “outed” by other patients in her treatment facility.

The 41-year-old actress checked into psychiatric rehab facility Silver Hill Hospital in Connecticut earlier this month to treat her bipolar II disorder.

In pictures: Oprah’s five life lessons

Her 66-year-old husband, Michael Douglas, said Catherine had initially planned to keep quiet about her battle with depression, but felt obliged to speak up after other hospital residents started gossiping about her.

“I must say, Catherine’s being quite open about it because she was outed, you know,” Michael told the Oprah Winfrey Show.

“She went to go get some help and some other patient probably in there said, ‘Hey, you won’t believe who’s in here now.’ And, so, once that happens, I think she felt [it] best to kind of get out the story.”

Michael and Catherine’s marriage is widely regarded as one of Hollywood’s success stories, but the actor says they have had an extremely tough year. He was diagnosed with cancer, his eldest son Cameron, 32, was jailed for dealing crystal meth and his ex-wife Diandra Douglas is suing him for a portion of the profits he made from Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

Michael said his personal problems made it very difficult for Catherine to tell him she was unhappy.

“My oldest son is in federal prison, my ex-wife is suing me, and I got cancer. It’s kind of hard for the wife to say, ‘I’m depressed’,” he said.

“‘You’re depressed, huh? How about some cancer, you want to get depressed?'” the actor joked.

Michael said Catherine’s Welsh background also exacerbated her condition. While he just “got on with it”, Catherine bottled her emotions up before they became too much.

“When you’ve got cancer you’ve got to take care of business. They tell you you have seven weeks of chemo, radiation, you kind of dive in and do it,” he said.

“I’m the kind of person when they’re sick, I just curl up, I don’t like a lot of fuss and no attention. I just like to get on with it. So I got on with it.

“I think that part of Catherine’s whole background, she’s Welsh and the Welsh it’s all stiff upper lip, not let your feelings show.”

Michael and Catherine have two children, Dylan, 10, and eight-year-old Carys. He was declared cancer-free in January and he said Catherine is also better after seeking treatment.

“She’s great now, she’s shooting a movie and she’s relived she has a much better understanding because this was not something where she was clearly aware of what was going on,” he said.

Meet the heifer who thinks she is a horse!

Meet the heifer who thinks she is a horse!

This teenage wasn’t allowed to have a horse. No problem – she’s turned her cow into one!

Most 15-year-old girls have asked their parents for a pony at some stage – and many of them have been disappointed when told they couldn’t have one.

When Regina Mayer’s parents gave her that message, she refused to give up on her dream of horse-riding and show-jumping. Instead, the girl from southern Germany wandered out to her family’s dairy paddock, saddled up one of the cows, Luna, and decided to teach her to jump instead.

“She thinks she’s a horse,” says Regina proudly.

Regina and two-year-old Luna started off taking walks together, and then Luna adjusted to the riding saddle and stirrups. After six months she was happy to let Regina sit in her saddle for the first time.

The pair go on long rides through the countryside together, hurdling over makeshift jumps.

Luna understands commands such as “go”, “stand” and “gallop”, and has even been taking lessons from cow trainer Anne Wiltafsky, who explains, “Younger cows can jump really well.”

George Clooney turns 50!

George Clooney turns 50!

George Clooney, Hollywood’s hottest bachelor, just gets better with age. We celebrate the sexy silver fox’s half-century with a look back at his brilliant career and the loves of his life.

While it may seem like only yesterday that he turned up as the fresh-faced Dr Doug Ross on the long-running US medical drama ER, next month George Clooney will celebrate half a century on this earth.

Most people would consider their 50th birthday a major milestone, but this dashing star with the come-to-bed eyes and distinguished grey hair says it’s no big deal.

In fact, he doesn’t mind getting older. Not that it isn’t a surprise to him, mind you. “It’s an interesting thing to watch yourself grow older on screen,” George once told a British newspaper. “I was watching [his 2009 movie] Up In The Air and I thought, ‘Who’s the old grey-haired guy?’ I never wear make-up for movies, and it’s starting to show.

“It’s funny, because most male actors work with actresses who are considerably younger. But earlier on in my career I was working with a lot of actresses who were my age or older, so people always thought I was older anyway. Now I’m going through this thing with people thinking I’m about 60!”

Despite this, George insists he has no problems with seeing his craggy face on screen – and says he hopes he’ll continue to get the opportunity in the years to come.

“I’m kind of comfortable with getting older, because it’s better than the other option, which is being dead!” he says.

Miranda Kerr’s little Flynn in full bloom!

Miranda Kerr's little Flynn in full bloom!

Jetsetting couple Miranda and Orlando are clearly revelling in their role as proud parents.

Navigating one of the world’s busiest airports with a baby in tow would be a tad stressful for most new parents. But for jetsetting duo Miranda Kerr and Orlando Bloom, it’s child’s play.

Looking every bit the proud parents that they are, the genetically blessed pair shared intimate smiles and whispers, doting over their gorgeous three-month-old son Flynn Christopher Bloom at Los Angeles Airport while preparing to board a flight to New York last week.

Miranda has described Flynn – who was born on January 6 weighing a solid 4.5kg – as her “little ray of sunshine”, and his arrival has obviously brought her and Orlando even closer together.

Certainly, it seems that 34-year-old Orlando is in every sense of the word a hands-on dad. In fact, with the Pirates Of The Caribbean star carrying his precious son whenever he and his wife step out the door, there appears to be no need for a pram!

But the besotted papa, who, like Miranda, seems to have taken to parenthood with great enthusiasm, clearly wouldn’t have it any other way. “It’s awesome,” Orlando, who tied the knot with Gunnedah’s most famous export in July last year, recently said of parenthood. “I love being a father. It’s changed everything in so many ways. Miranda is an amazing mother,” he told Hollyscoop.

Leigh and Lara: Our biggest loser love story

Leigh and Lara: OUr biggest loser love story

Having dropped an amazing 90kg between them, Lara and Leigh are falling in love all over again, and dreaming of their wedding day.

Leigh Westren and Lara Whalan admit they had all but given up on their hopes of having a dream wedding – let alone the idea of Leigh carrying his beautiful bride across the threshold. Before they signed up for The Biggest Loser: Families, the young couple couldn’t even put their arms around each other to share a loving embrace. But that’s all changed now.

Not only are they enjoying their amazing new bodies after shedding a whopping 90kg between them, they are also falling in love with each other all over again. They have to, they point out, as they now barely recognise each other!

“Towards the end of my time in The Biggest Loser house, I was giving Leigh a cuddle, and said, ‘Oh my gosh, I feel like I am cheating on you with another guy!’” laughs Lara, 25, who weighed in at 107kg when she joined the show. “When you are hugging this figure that is all of a sudden skinny and muscly… I said, ‘Leigh, keep talking to me because this is weird!’”

The gorgeous couple can’t keep their eyes or hands off each other at the Woman’s Day photo shoot, and it’s easy to see why – they have never looked better.

“I brought my first pair of jeans!” Lara exclaims. “I was an eleven, but hopefully I am a size 10 now.”

As for her “spunky” boyfriend, who unlike Lara is still in the running for The Biggest Loser crown, she can’t stop gushing about his amazing transformation. “Leigh looks like he has just come froma Calvin Klein shoot,” Lara says, ogling him from across the studio. And Lara, who was eliminated in week 10 of the competition having lost a total of 40kg, isn’t the only one impressed – Leigh struggles to find the words to describe his girlfriend’s makeover and simply says, “Lara looks amazing.”
