Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes in Miami Beach

Tom Cruise is still one year away from the big 5-0, but that didn’t stop his wife Kate Holmes from throwing him a lavish surprise birthday party on Saturday.

The actor turned 49 on Sunday, but had not scheduled any celebrations because he had been working such long hours filming his new movie Rock of Ages.

Katie, 32, wasn’t about to let her husband’s big day pass without a party, so she secretly planned an intimate dinner party in Miami on Saturday night.

Forty of the couple’s closest friends attended the bash, which took place at Miami’s exclusive Soho Beach House, the New York Post reports.

Tom’s children Isabella, 18, Connor, 16, and Suri, five, all attended the party, though some celebrity friends, including Jennifer Lopez couldn’t make it.

Guests were treated to an authentic Italian dinner, with Tom’s favourite chocolate cake for dessert. After the meal, revellers took to the dance floor while a Cuban band played traditional music.

How to wear this season’s hottest coats

How to wear this season's hottest coats

Karlie Kloss models a cape from John Galliano for Christian Dior's autumn/winter 2011 collection

We may live in a country where our version of a ‘cold’ winter is usually warmer than springtime in Paris, but that doesn’t mean we don’t need (or want) a great coat to rug up in while we (mildly) freeze on nights out, or on the way to work in the morning.

The three key pieces worth investing in this winter are the ubiquitous trench coat, a classic long-line coat and the cape.

In pictures: Top trends from Australian Fashion Week

The cape

For something with a little bit of drama and a lot of convenience, this season’s ultimate throw-on-and-go update is the cape.

Practicality (they’re easy, cosy and comfy) meets theatricality (see the sexy caped crusader above at Dior), bringing a touch of theatrical swagger to the everyday.

Whether your style is ladylike, a bit bohemian, classic or even preppy, the cold-weather cape can cater to a multitude of different personalities.

Wear it with short sleeves underneath and elbow length gloves for a sleek finish, with a faux-fur stole around the collar instead of a scarf, or with jeans and a blazer as a statement piece to throw on for the weekend.

The trench

Next to the cape, you may think of a trench coat as basic and boring, but I prefer to think of it as perennially classic — an item of clothing so simple, but so effortlessly chic it has the power to make you feel like Audrey Hepburn when you’re actually feeling, well, anything but.

This season, trenches come in all lengths and with or without sleeves, perfect for the warmer (and wetter) parts of Australia.

Wear yours tied at the waist — either with a contrasting belt, or the belt it comes with, and make sure your outfit can peek through by belting it with the buttons undone.

Because of its simplicity, use the classic trench to experiment with shape. Wear it with a billowing maxi skirt or wide-leg pants. A chunky shoe or platform heel will also help to anchor the fuller silhouette.

The long line

For those of us who prefer a heavier, more solid winter-warmer, the eternally chic and ever-classic long-line coat (think 1920s glamorous knee-length versions) gets modern with lush colours and luxe fabrics.

Cashmere, fur and satin up the glamour quotient for an evening option, and metallic finishes have an easy uptown polish.

In pictures: Hot frocks at the Met Ball

For day, options with concealed fastenings and structured necklines have a graphic elegance, creating a clean, unfussy line. Or opt for easy, refined style in classic camel — just like jeans, a camel long-line coat will go with everything.

Joanne Lees relives her outback horror

Joanne Lees relives her outback horror

Ten years after her boyfriend Peter Falconio was slain in the desert, Joanne Lees remains a victim of gossip, spite and innuendo, report Sue Williams in Alice Springs and William Langley in London.

Joanne Lees stands on the doorstep of her neat terrace house on the outskirts of her home town in England, and her eyes fill with tears. “I’m sorry,” she says, as she contemplates the upcoming 10th anniversary of her boyfriend Peter Falconio’s murder on a lonely road in the dark heart of central Australia. “It’s always difficult for me.”

For Joanne, now 37, that moonless night a decade ago – and half a world away – changed her life forever. She and Peter, who was 28 at the time, were ambushed on July 14, 2001, by an interstate drug runner as they toured Australia in a Kombi. Not only did Joanne lose the man she hoped to marry, she lost her innocence.

Although she escaped killer Bradley Murdoch’s attempts to hunt her down by hiding in the freezing scrub off the Stuart Highway north of Alice Springs, Joanne then had to endure the agony of being suspected of involvement in her boyfriend’s disappearance. Murdoch was arrested following one of the biggest manhunts in Australia’s history, and convicted on DNA evidence from blood he had left on Joanne’s T-shirt in the struggle to bind her hands and feet. He was eventually found guilty and jailed for life… but Joanne’s torment is far from over.

Peter’s body is yet to be found, and in both Australia and the UK, there continue to be many people who pour doubt on her version of events. Northern Territory Police Commander Colleen Gwynne, who took charge of much of the investigation after the attack, says while the huge amount of publicity around the trial of Murdoch erased a lot of the doubt, a few determined non-believers remain. “There is still an element of suspicion in some people’s minds,” says Commander Gwynne. “I guess some aren’t interested in the real story. They want it to be some sort of conspiracy, like a crime novel. They want to make it more interesting by adding things on.”

Liz Hurley tells: Why I love Shane

Liz Hurley tells: Why I love Shane

Liz Hurley and Shane Warne

The English glamazon finally opens up about why she fell for the Aussie cricketer.

Their passionate love affair looks set to go down in history as one of the most famous cases of opposites attracting. Indeed, Elizabeth Hurley confesses she felt inexplicably and “instantly” drawn to Shane Warne from the moment she laid eyes on the spin king. Since then, she’s transformed him in ways we’d never have thought possible.

The stunning 46-year-old British model and actress, whose relationship with the bleached-blond Melbourne cricketer continues to captivate the world, is all too aware of the apparent differences between her and her long-distance lover. Yet Liz, the epitome of glamour and style, has candidly revealed she couldn’t help but be deeply interested when she met the reformed larrikin.

“We come from very different worlds, so I think that’s fascinating, if not odd, to many,” the newly divorced mother-of-one reflects in an interview with UK Grazia magazine. “But it’s not often you meet people you instantly feel comfortable with and when you find that – even though there are vast differences in background and experience – it’s worth following through.”

Liz admits she soon came to realise that she and Shane, 41, were very much on the same wavelength. “When you recognise you have a lot in common with someone, it’s nice to explore,” she tells Grazia. “It helps to be open to new things. Some close off and become more insular as they grow older; for me, it’s the other way. I care less what people think. I find it liberating.”

Deborah Hutton: My cancer battle

Deborah Hutton: My cancer battle

A tiny spot turned out to be a time bomb that could not only have ruined Deborah’s career, but threatened her life.

When Deborah Hutton went into surgery last month to have a skin cancer removed, she literally had no idea what would be left of her face when she woke. “I just hoped my lips and nose would be in the same spot,” the model and presenter says, trying to make light of what she admits was a “terrifying” reality. “When I look back now, I am so incredibly lucky. But I was also so stupid to have got to that stage when I should have known better.”

What started as a pinprick-size mark on her top lip that wouldn’t go away turned out to be a life-threatening experience, which Deborah is revealing exclusively to Woman’s Day in the hope it helps others in the same predicament. It was late last year that the 49-year-old beauty noticed the tiny stubborn red mark she thought was a pimple. However, when it would disappear as quickly as it popped up, she made the dire mistake of adopting an “out of sight, out of mind” attitude. “In hindsight, I should have done something about it then,” Deborah admits. “But I got busy with other things and told myself that most people have little red patches on their skin that just come and go. Visually, there wasn’t much there – and with a little bit of make-up, it looked fine.

“But when I was putting make-up on a few months later, I put my nail on the area and thought, ‘Oh no, I can’t feel anything.’ The area was numb and I started to panic.” Deborah knew she was highly susceptible to skin cancer. She had a small spot taken off her chest 14 years earlier, and one in the same place on her lip as the recent red mark only four years ago. As a result, she had been meticulous about having her skin checked professionally every year since.

She also knew that cancer ran in her family. Her brother David, a 50-year-old husband and father of two young boys, died soon after being diagnosed with liver cancer in 2009. Even though at her last check, her dermatologist had given her the all-clear, Deborah was desperate to get this new mark looked at. She rang her doctor, only to discover he had retired and there was a seven-week waiting list to see another doctor.

Find out more about Deborah’s cancer battle and read all about her life-saving diet in this week’s Woman’s Day on sale July 4, 2011.

Steve Jacob’s introduces his little ray of sunshine!

Steve Jacob's introduces his little ray of sunshine!

It’s been an emotional time for Steve and his wife Rose, who recently became parents. Clare Rigden spent the day with them and their baby Isabella Anthonette.

From the moment he first set eyes on his gorgeous baby girl Isabella, Steven Jacobs knew his life would never be the same again. Gazing down at his wife, “soul mate” Rose, whom he’d married a little over a year ago, the weatherman who is normally so ready with a wisecrack was, quite simply, lost for words. Nothing could describe how thrilled he was to be witnessing the start of this new life.

“Steven was definitely the emotional one during the delivery,” says Sydney Weekender presenter Rose, who gave birth to their daughter on May 25 via caesarean. “He was right there at my shoulder bawling his eyes out.” “It’s true, I was,” says Steven, smiling at their tiny daughter cradled in her mother’s arms. “I just couldn’t get over how beautiful she was – and how lucky we are. During the surgery, we took in an iPod and played the music we had at our wedding. And just as she was born, our wedding song came on. It was total coincidence, but it couldn’t have been more magical.”

To the sounds of David Gray’s Sail Away, which played when Rose walked down the aisle in Bali, little Isabella made her much-anticipated entrance. “After Issy was born, Rosie was in recovery so they popped me in a room with the baby,” Steve says. “They laid her on my chest for some ‘skin-on-skin’ time, and there I was with my little baby – just the two of us. Suddenly she was ours. It was the most unbelievable experience.” One the couple is still marvelling at.

And although the final few weeks of their pregnancy didn’t exactly go to plan, they couldn’t have been happier with the way Issy took her place in the world. “Isabella was a breech baby,” Rose explains. “A lot of babies are breech initially, but they naturally turn themselves around. But for whatever reason, Isabella decided to stay the naughty way up.”

Monaco stands still for royal wedding

Monaco stands still for royal wedding

One day after they married in a civil ceremony, Prince Albert and Charlene Wittstock brought Monaco to a standstill as they exchanged vows in a religious ceremony yesterday.

The 53-year-old royal and the former Olympic swimmer, 33, were married by the Archbishop of Monaco in a star-studded ceremony in the courtyard of the Royal Palace, watched by more than 850 guests.

In pictures: Monaco’s royal wedding

Albert donned the cream summer uniform of Monaco’s palace guards while the bride wore an off-the-shoulder Armani gown with a five-metre long train. The dress was embroidered with 40,000 Swarovski crystals, 20,000 mother of pearl tear drops and 30,000 ‘stones in gold shades’.

It was crafted from 130 metres of off-white silk and took Armani’s team more than 2,500 hours to make.

After the ceremony, the royal couple went to the nearby Sainte Devote Church to place Charlene’s bouquet in honour of the Patroness of Monaco. The stunning blonde was seen wiping away a tear as she left the church.

Albert and Charlene then took a ride in a open-topped car through crowded streets to their reception, which was held at the Prince’s Palace. Once there, Charlene changed into another custom-made Armani gown.

More than 450 guests, including Naomi Campbell, Karl Lagerfeld, Giorgio Armani and Roger Moore, helped the couple celebrate their marriage with a multi-course dinner prepared by French chef Alain Ducasse followed by a fireworks display.

In keeping with Monaco royal tradition, Albert and Charlene married in a civil ceremony on Friday — which saw Charlene receive the title Princess Charlene of Monaco — before wedding again yesterday.

The lead-up to the $75 million wedding has been plagued with scandal. A French newspaper claimed Charlene had tried to return to her native South Africa earlier this week, amid claims Albert had fathered a third love child with a mystery woman.

Albert and Charlene have furiously denied claims their relationship is in trouble, and have put on several public displays of affection in the past few days.
