How Harper Seven got her name

It certainly has that celebrity ring to it, but exactly why did the Beckhams choose the name Harper Seven for their newborn daughter?

Victoria Beckham, who gave birth to the couple’s first daughter on Sunday at Cedars Sinai hospital in Los Angeles at 7.55am, has always liked the name Harper an unnamed friend of the couple told US magazine.

“Harper is an old English name that [Victoria] has always liked,” the source said. But what about her middle name Seven? Although David Beckham‘s old jersey number was seven, the couple’s friend says it is also known as a lucky number. “Seven is a very spiritual lucky number. She was born in the seventh month, in the seventh hour.”

Flick through the pictures of stars who have chosen unusual baby names here.

David and Victoria Beckham aren’t the only ones with unusual baby name choices.

Madonna named her daughter Lourdes.

Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise named their daughter Suri.

Nicole Richie and Benji Madden named their daughter Harlow.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin named their daughter Apple.

Alicia Silverstone recently named her new-born baby boy Bear Blu.

Jamie Oliver’s new born baby boy was named Buddy Bear.

Twelve stealthy superfoods

Getty

With all the health claims about exotic superfoods such as acai and pomegranate, it’s easy to overlook ordinary fruits and vegetables that also pack a hefty nutritional punch. Charge up your diet with these foods.

Mangoes

A new US study shows that mango prevents cancer growth in leukaemia and lung, breast and colon cancer cells, at least in test tubes. The researchers say bioactive gallotannins are the compounds responsible for the effect.

Green tea

Japanese research suggests that the polyphenols in green tea disable the sulphur compounds in oral bacteria that are responsible for bad breath and cavities, so sip a cup to freshen your breath and protect your pearly whites.

Red grapes

The antioxidant resveratrol, found in red grapes and wine, has been shown to “switch on” a gene responsible for longevity and blood sugar regulation, University of Texas researchers wrote in Endocrinology.

Cherries

Runners should pick cherries, says a study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. Researchers found that cherries reduced inflammation and oxidative stress, aiding in the recovery of muscle function.

Lemons

According to scientists at Purdue University in the US, adding a dash of lemon juice to black or green tea increases your body’s absorption of the tea’s immunity-boosting antioxidants by 80 percent.

Oats

A study published in the International Journal of Epidemiology shows that premenopausal women can reduce their risk of breast cancer by a remarkable 41 percent when they switch to a diet rich in wholegrains, such as oats.

Cabbage

Studies show that Korean kimchi — a traditional condiment that is made from fermented cabbage, garlic, vinegar, and chilli — helps to prevent stomach cancer. Pick some up at your local Asian market.

Walnuts

A study published in PLoS Medicine has found that people who regularly ate walnuts had a 19 percent reduction in heart disease risk, thanks to these nuts’ high content of heart-healthy omega-3 and omega-6 essential fatty acids.

Garlic

If you eat plenty of garlic, you’ll have a 28 percent lower rate of colon cancer, the US Cancer Institute says. Garlic counters a particular tumour-promoting prostaglandin, plus its sulphur compounds boost immunity and block carcinogens.

Beans

Not only are beans a great source of dietary fibre. Now research from the Heart Foundation shows Hispanic women, who eat twice as many beans as Caucasian women, also have significantly lower rates of breast cancer. Beans contain high amounts of oestrogen-blocking phytoestrogens, which protect against cancer.

Ginger

You probably know that freshly grated ginger in tea or food can settle an upset stomach. What you may not know is that eating it regularly slashes your chances of getting irritable bowel syndrome by nearly 50 percent, because it helps protect the lining of your stomach, French researchers have found.

Chocolate

A Harvard study has found that people who regularly eat chocolate live nearly three years longer than those who don’t indulge. Apart from giving yourself a well-earned treat, chocolate contains phenols that prevent fat from clogging arteries.

Surprising C

The immune-enhancing benefits of vitamin C are already known. Now, according to a study in Nutrition, we can add mood improvement to the list of things vitamin C can help with. In one experiment, acute-care hospital patients experienced significant and rapid improvement in mood almost immediately after taking vitamin C supplements. Not only does vitamin C regulate the hormone serotonin, which affects the mind and emotions, but, according to study author Dr John Hoffer, about one in five acute-care patients have vitamin C levels so low as to be compatible with scurvy.

Honey, honey

Researchers at Amsterdam’s Academic Medical Centre have finally figured out what natural therapists have known for centuries — that honey kills bacteria and speeds healing of wounds. Researchers writing in the Journal of Experimental Biology found that the primary antibiotic element in medical-grade manuka honey is defensin-1, which is a powerful immune system protein. The honey was found to be effective against antibiotic-resistant staph and bacterial infections; honey’s pH (acidity) is another reason why it provides a barrier against invading bacteria.

Coffee lovers, rejoice!

An Italian study published in the Annals of Oncology has shown that drinking coffee is associated with a 36 percent reduction in oral cancer risk. There are two possible reasons for this, the researchers found. One is that coffee contains chemicals with significant antioxidant properties; the other is that it also contains kahweol, chlorogenic acid, and cafestol, compounds that help to reduce the genotoxicity of some carcinogens.

Beckhams ‘name baby after soccer jersey’

Victoria Beckham names baby after soccer jersey

David Beckham posted this candid picture of his pregnant wife on his Facebook page last week.

Victoria Beckham has given birth to a baby girl named Harper Seven Beckham.

The 37-year-old former Spice Girl delivered the baby by planned caesarean section at Los Angeles’ Cedars Sinai Medical Center yesterday morning.

In pictures: Royal baby countdown

Her husband David announced the news on his Facebook page last night.

“I am so proud and excited to announce the birth of our daughter Harper Seven Beckham,” he wrote. “She weighed a healthy [3.45kg] and arrived at 7.55 this morning, here in LA. Victoria is doing really well and her brothers are delighted to have a baby sister.”

The name ‘Seven’ is believed to be in reference to David’s Manchester United and England football number, while ‘Harper’ is thought to be a name the couple have liked for several years.

“The couple loved the name Harper,” the source said. “It has no hidden meaning — they just fell for the name and think it has a lovely sound.

“They went for Seven as a middle name as they think it is a lucky and spiritual number. And the baby arrived around 7am in July — the seventh month.”

Harper is the Beckham’s fourth child and only girl. They also have Brooklyn, 12, Romeo, eight, and six-year-old Cruz.

David and Victoria are believed to be thrilled to have a girl at last, with David bursting into tears when he saw Harper, who is said to bear a striking resemblance to Victoria as a baby.

“David has been crying with joy,” a source told the UK’s Sun newspaper. “They are all so happy.”

David and Victoria’s sons have been particularly excited about the new arrival, but Romeo’s name suggestions were not well received.

“When we got told it was a boy, Romeo was like, ‘How about Justin Bieber Beckham?’,” David said in a recent interview.

“So now that we know it’s a girl, he’s like, ‘What about Justine Bieber Beckham?'”

Stars wait in line for William and Kate

Left: Prince William and Catherine walk the red carpet; right: Nicole Kidman seems starstruck by William.

Nicole Kidman and Barbra Streisand are used to people lining up to meet them, but the tables were turned on Saturday night when they were forced to queue for the chance to chat with Prince William and Catherine.

The actress and the singer were among dozens of stars who waited patiently in line to meet the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at the 2011 BAFTA Brits to Watch gala at the Belasco Theatre in Los Angeles, California.

William and Catherine were the guests of honour at the bash, and seemed at home on the red carpet, outshining some of Hollywood’s best-dressed stars.

Catherine wore a lavender Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen couture gown with a high neckline, full flowing skirt and silvery belt while William looked dapper in a black tuxedo and bow tie.

Catherine accessorised her outfit with a pair of diamond chandelier earring loaned to her by Queen Elizabeth, a pair of silver Jimmy Choo platform stilettos and a Jimmy Choo clutch bag.

William made a speech at the event, before joining Catherine to greet stars including Nicole, Barbra, Tom Hanks, Jennifer Lopez, Jennifer Garner and Blake Lively.

Unlike most people meeting superstars for the first time, William and Catherine did not appear star-struck — if anything, it was the other way around.

Nicole was particularly taken with the royal newlyweds, telling reporters she “loved” them and was thrilled to get the chance to meet them.

“They make me smile, I love them,” she told the UK’s Daily Mail. “I think they are lovely. I have just got off the phone from my mum who said, ‘It’s so good that you are going [to the event].”

Will Princess Beatrice be next down the aisle?

Will Princess Beatrice be next down the aisle?

Princess Beatrice and her longterm boyfriend Dave Clark

Britain could be hosting another royal wedding next year, with Princess Beatrice reportedly being on the verge of announcing an engagement to her boyfriend.

The 22-year-old royal has been dating Virgin Galactic businessman Dave Clark, 29, for five years.

Beatrice and Dave are currently on holiday in St Tropez to celebrate Beatrice’s recent graduation from university, and are said to be seriously considering tying the knot.

In pictures: Love is in the heir for William and Kate

Friends say the couple have planned a romantic trip to Spain later this year, and are likely to return from that holiday engaged.

“Dave wanted to wait until Bea had completed her degree to talk seriously about their future,” a source told the UK’s Daily Mail.

“They have planned a romantic holiday together to Spain and the word among their inner circle is that an engagement is on the cards.”

Beatrice’s parents Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson are said to be thrilled with the impending engagement. They have got to know Dave well over the years and have been expecting him to propose for a while.

“Both Sarah and Andrew would be delighted to call Dave their son-in-law,” the source said. “They already think of him as one of the family and aren’t surprised in the least that he wants to ask for her hand.

“He has stuck by Beatrice through the family’s every embarrassing scandal and he brings stability to her life, as well as fun and laughter, not to mention love.”

Beatrice is only 22, but friends say she is not afraid of marrying young. Her parents’ relationship ended in divorce, but she reportedly still believes in marriage and wants to settle down and start a family instead of pursuing a career.

“The Duke and Duchess may have got things wrong in their marriage but bringing up their children together is not one of them, so Bea is not adverse to marriage,” the source said.

“She is young, but very sensible, and although she goes out, she is not a big party-lover. Settling down is the most likely option as she has no concrete career plans.”

Vancouver kissing couple: We are moving to Australia

Vancouver kissing couple are moving to Australia

He was dubbed the ‘Riot Romeo’. Now, romantic hero Scott Jones is bringing his Canadian sweetheart home to Australia.

Not since the ’50s film From Here To Eternity or Rodin’s iconic marble statue The Kiss has a humble pash so captured the world’s imagination. When Perth’s Scott Jones and his girlfriend, Alexandra Thomas, locked lips in the middle of a riot in Canada, they became a YouTube sensation and were dubbed a modern day Romeo and Juliet.

In a world-exclusive, Scott, 29, and Vancouver native Alex, 24, take Woman’s Day back to where that celebrated kiss took place, tell the real story behind the images, and reveal their plans to continue their love story in Australia. “We’d gone to a friend’s apartment to watch the ice hockey championship and had our faces painted in the Vancouver Canucks colours, blue and green,” says Scott, a bartender and aspiring comedian. “When the game was over and our team had lost, I took Alex into town to get a few drinks and drown our sorrows.

“We hadn’t been out long when all of a sudden things started getting out of control [fans began rioting, beating up bystanders and torching cars]. The streets were being shut down by police on horses. Out of nowhere, there were deafening explosions and tear gas. “We were running to get away from it, but the police stood at the end of the street and charged at us – it was insane! I was holding Alex’s hand but she tripped and fell. The police were right behind her so I went back to help her. I just wanted to protect her from it all.”

Alex picks up the story. “They were bashing us down with their shields and I was shouting, ‘Please stop!’ It was a nightmare and I don’t know what I would have done if Scott wasn’t there. I was really freaking out. “I was crying, and when they finally stopped hitting us and pushing us down, Scott had his arms around me and was just trying to calm me down. “That was when he kissed me. It made me feel really safe and I knew that he loved me. I’d never felt in that much danger before, but I wasn’t surprised that he came to my rescue – he is always really caring and considerate.”

*MasterChef* Mat: The day my mum disappeared

MasterChef Mat: The day my mum disappeared

Mat Beyer explains how a painful family secret was the real reason for keeping his mobile phone in the MasterChef  house, resulting in his early exit.

As contestant Mat Beyer left the MasterChef  house in disgrace, he had no regrets about the smartphone scandal that engulfed him and made him “infamous” – because Mat knew the real and deeply private reason he needed a direct line to the outside world. On Friday, July 9, 2004, when he was 16, his mother Julie, 47, went missing from her home in Albury, NSW, and was never seen again.

“She was a normal, everyday mum,” recalls Mat, who was living in Melbourne with his father when his mother vanished. Although Mat’s parents separated when he was nine, the family remained close and in constant contact. “I spoke to her every day. We were so close. I was a mummy’s boy, totally. I loved my mum – I still love her.”

Mat remembers his mother as a loving woman who was content in her life, and who made fabulous burritos and baked goods after shifts working as a dental nurse or, in later years, in the office of a law firm. In 2004, Julie was working in NSW as a legal secretary but had resigned as she was excitedly planning a move to Mackay in Queensland, where she had rented a new home and had begun processing a new lease. She had put some belongings in storage in preparation for the move and the beginning of a brand new start. But before she set out for Queensland, she vanished while running an errand in her car to Lavington, NSW.

“The last conversation we had was about the new house she had found and how excited she was to move,” Mat says. “Out of nowhere, she just disappeared.” Mat and his father were forced to call the police when Julie failed to answer her phone for two days in a row, unusual behaviour for the normally chatty redhead. “She just stopped answering our calls, and eventually her phone switched itself off,” Mat says. “Her bank account was never touched again. Her car [a white Daewoo station wagon] was never found. She never renewed her licence.”

Mel B tells: I’ll have an Aussie baby!

Mel B tells: I'll have an Aussie baby!

Melanie Brown and her daughter Angel.

The pop star plans to spice up The X Factor, and can’t wait to bring her family to the country she loves.

As Melanie Brown leans over her adorable daughter Angel to dab some “fairy princess” shadow over her eyes, the little girl throws her arms around her mum’s swollen belly and asks, teasingly, “What’s that?” “You know the answer to that one,” grins the former Scary Spice, now known as Mel B. “It’s a baby.” “When’s it coming out?” asks the cheeky four-year-old. “That’s what I want to know!” her mother laughs. “I feel like I’m about to burst!”

Mel – who usually lives in Los Angeles, but is in Australia preparing for her role as a judge on TV talent quest The X Factor – is eight months pregnant and has clearly reached that uncomfortable stage. As she is primped and preened for Woman’s Day’s exclusive photo shoot, Mel, 36, clutches her baby bump and groans, “Who was it who said pregnancy was exciting? It is at the start, with the glowing skin and the joy of bringing new life into the world, but now I just want this baby out of me! “This is my third pregnancy,” she quickly adds, “so I’m allowed to moan!”

Despite her jokey protestations, Mel is clearly revelling in motherhood. Chuckling in her distinctive, throaty, northern England accent, she says this pregnancy is very different from the previous ones, “Because I’m actually with the dad!” The father of her unborn child is her second husband, movie producer Stephen Belafonte, whom she married in Las Vegas in 2007 and describes as “my best friend and the love of my life”.

Mel’s elder daughter, Phoenix, 12, was born shortly before she divorced her first husband, former back-up dancer Jimmy Gulzar, and Angel was conceived during a brief relationship with Hollywood funnyman Eddie Murphy, who famously demanded a DNA test before accepting paternity. “This time,” Mel smiles, “it’s been lovely to have a pregnancy with a loving, caring partner and not all alone as a single parent moaning to myself. You know, it’s nice to have someone who’s really supportive.”

Read more about Mel’s pregnancys and find out why she loves Australia in this week’s Woman’s Day, on sale July 11, 2011.
