Kate and Pippa talk bodies, babies and boys

Kate and Pippa talk bodies, babies and boys

The Middleton girls are more than just stunning sisters – they’re best friends.

Strolling across the pebbles of a remote Welsh beach, the two young women attract little attention as they chat in the sunshine. The only clue that these are the world’s most famous sisters – the Duchess of Cambridge and Pippa Middleton – are the bodyguards, a man and a woman, following discreetly behind them.

To many, the girly seaside gossip in Kate’s adopted home of Anglesey seemed like a reunion for the sisters, who live 400km apart and have rarely been seen together since the royal wedding. But despite rumours of a feud between them, Woman’s Day can reveal Kate, 29, and Pippa, 27, are closer than ever and have had frequent secret meetings to discuss bodies, blokes and babies!

“They see each other at least once a week,” royal biographer Katie Nicholl says. “Kate often joins Pippa at the family home in Bucklebury, and Pippa’s helping her move into Kensington Palace. They’re never apart for long. You don’t hear about it because they keep things quiet.” On this occasion, it’s believed the sisters caught up on family matters, discussed Kate’s recent visit to riot-torn Birmingham in England and made plans for Pippa’s birthday on September 6. But the main topic of conversation was, as usual, the dramatic ways in which their lives have changed since April’s royal wedding.

Once a social butterfly, Kate is now a housewife in remote Wales, while her husband Prince William spends long hours working at the nearby RAF base. With so many solitary hours and few close friends, Kate has come to rely heavily on her younger sister as a confidante. “This runs deeper than sibling affection,” says Katie, author of The Making Of A Royal Romance. “Pippa is the one person Kate can implicitly trust. She can be as candid as she needs to be. If she needs to get anything off her chest, she can tell Pippa and know the confession will stay between them.”

See the exclusive pictures of Catherine and Pippa spending time together and read more about their bond in this week’s Woman’s Day, on sale August 29, 2011.

His legendary love life is the one subject Richard Wilkins doesn’t cover in his new book Black Ties, Red Carpets, Green Rooms, but that hasn’t stopped one girlfriend from unexpectedly coming clean about their affair – Rebecca Gibney.

The Packed To The Rafters actress made the surprising revelation about the pair’s relationship in an interview with Kyle and Jackie O on Sydney’s 2Day FM last week, admitting Richard, then 33, won her heart back when she was youngster at the beginning of her rise to fame in the 1980s.

“I was 22 and he swept me off my feet,” Rebecca confessed, adding that their dalliance, while passionate, was doomed. “We were having a lovely time until I found out about a flight attendant and then it didn’t go so well!” she admitted. “I bought him a rose when I took him to Melbourne, and unbeknownst to me he gave that rose to the flight attendant on the flight!”

Even more amazingly, the hostie Richard left Rebecca for after meeting her on that flight went on to become his wife. Richard married Michelle Burke and together they had a son, Christian Anthony.“He did go on to marry her, so she was pretty special,” Rebecca explained, laughing. “He fell in love with her, and she and I became friends. Jane Fonda: How I look this good at 73!

Jane Fonda: How i look this good at 73!

Her private life hasn’t always been a success but now, aged 73 and living life on her own terms, Jane tells LINA DAS, ‘I’m the happiest I’ve ever been’.

There have been many incarnations of Jane Fonda over the years, but the one common denominator has been the enthusiasm with which she has embraced them all. Whether she was vamping it up as screen goddess Barbarella, campaigning against the Vietnam war as Hanoi Jane, or donning legwarmers for her work-out videos and exhorting women to “feel the burn”, Jane has never shown less than 100 per cent commitment to all of her endeavours. It’s a commitment that can be fascinating, inspiring and, frankly, exhausting to watch, but if anyone thought that Jane, now 73, might be slipping quietly into her dotage, they’d be mistaken.

Her latest project tackles the thorniest subject of all – ageing – and if anything, she’s even more impassioned now than ever. “I made a list of everything I would have wanted to know when I was in my forties about getting older,” she says, “and decided to write a book about it. The list ranged from what sex is going to be like, to how to meet new people, to exercise, to what happens to your brain as you get older.” Jane’s book, Prime Time, is a comprehensive guide to living well in the “third act” – the term she uses to describe the final three decades of her life. It is a warm, informative and incredibly life-affirming book.

Nor does she hide the fact she has made some very public mistakes on the path to where she is now. “If people can learn anything from me it’s that I’ve not always been happy and I’ve not always been strong,” she says. “When I was 20, I thought I was going to die of loneliness, I was so unhappy. But as I’ve got older, I’ve found myself growing happier, and I wanted to understand why.” Certainly Jane looks pretty chirpy, as well as vibrant, healthy and exceptionally taut. We meet in the home of her boyfriend, music mogul Richard Perry – “my honey” as she refers to him – with Jane bounding into the living room in tight tracksuit bottoms and a T-shirt.

Photos of her in Cannes a few months ago showed her looking magnificent in a Pucci gown. “But it takes a village!” she laughs. “There’s a hair person, a make-up person, a stylist – it doesn’t just happen. I exercise regularly – five or six days a week if I can – even though I’ve had a hip and knee replacement. If I hadn’t gone back to working out, I would not be the person I am today, not only physically but mentally, too, because being active physically as you get older is so important. “I also watch what I eat, I meditate, I have enough money to get a trainer and have massages, and I’ve had plastic surgery. I have a genetic problem with bags under my eyes, and years ago I had the fat removed from my eyelids and the jowls corrected. But I didn’t have the wrinkles taken away,” she insists. “I still wanted to look like me, only a more rested me.”

Four reasons you should eat your greens

Four reasons you should eat your greens

Everyone knows you’re supposed to eat lots of fruit and vegetables every day, but it can be very difficult to do. Here are some reasons why you should make the effort.

1. Staying healthy: There is convincing evidence that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables can be protective against:

  • Cancer

  • Coronary heart disease

  • Stroke

There is also increasing scientific evidence that fruit and vegetables may play a role in preventing cataracts, diverticular disease, high blood pressure and types of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease including asthma and bronchitis.

Related: Secret super-fruits

2. Losing weight:A further benefit of enjoying more fruits and vegetables is that they could help displace foods high in saturated fats, sugar and salt in your diet.

Most fruits and vegetables are filling, but generally low in energy density, meaning kilojoules. This is very useful for people wanting to manage their weight.

3. Avoiding chronic diseases: Along with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, obesity and physical inactivity, inadequate levels of fruit and vegetables has been identified by the World Health Organisation as one of the major causes of chronic diseases.

Worldwide, a low intake of fruit and vegetables is estimated to be responsible for about 19 per cent of gastrointestinal cancer, about 31 per cent of ischemic heart disease and 11 per cent of stroke.

4. Fighting free radicalsNot only do fruits and vegetables contain plenty of vitamins, minerals and fibre, there is something else about fruits and vegetables that makes them special — they are abundant in antioxidants.

Antioxidants are chemicals (phytochemicals — pronounced ‘fight-o-chemicals’) often found naturally in plant foods that can help protect our body cells from being damaged by ‘free radicals’.

Free radicals are produced both naturally in our body and due to exposure to pollutants and result in cell damage.

Antioxidants can therefore guard against cancer and heart disease, as well as diseases of the eye — all of which can be influenced by damaged body cells.

The role of antioxidants in the prevention and treatment of a number of other conditions is also being investigated.

It is the phytochemicals that give fruits and vegetables their distinctive colours and smells.

Related: Getting your family to eat more vegetables

We generally classify fruit and vegetables into five colour groups, according to the phytochemicals they contain — green, yellow/orange, red, blue/purple and white/brown.

There are many different phytochemicals that work together to protect your health. You will probably find that some have quite unusual names but don’t let this deter you from finding out about their unique health benefits.

To ensure you receive a great variety of phytochemicals in your diet, choose fruits and vegetables from each of the colour groups every day.

No reality TV stars to grace the Hollywood Walk of Fame

No reality TV stars to grace the Hollywood Walk of Fame

They are one of the wealthiest familys in Hollywood, but you won’t see the Kardashian name on the Hollywood Walk of Fame any time soon.

The same goes for Paris Hilton, Jersey Shore‘s Snooki or any Real Wives stars.

This was made clear when a spokesperson for the Walk of Fame wrote on their official Facebook page saying, “Someone asked if we give reality show characters stars? Hell to the No!”

Vice president for media relations and producer for the Hollywood Walk of Fame Ana Martinez, told CNN that adding reality stars to the mix was not an option right now.

“It’s just not on the radar for us right now,” she said.

Martinez said that nominees need to meet the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce committee’s criteria which includes awards and honours in entertainment, philanthropic work, longevity in the field and the willingness to agree to the ceremony and pay $30,000 for the star’s installation and upkeep on the street.

Despite some reality personalities already having stars, including American Idol host and E! News anchor Ryan Seacrest for his work in radio and Ozzy Osbourne and Gene Simmons of KISS for their music careers.

But it seems the rules aren’t set in stone with Martinez saying, “We just want to bring the tourists to Hollywood.”

The truth about carbs

Not all carbs are created equal

Despite being branded as the evil villain in our food, carbohydrates are vital for a healthy functioning body. However, not all carbohydrates are created equal. Accredited nutritionist and exercise physiologist Caitlin Reid debunks four myths about carbohydrates.

Myth one: All carbohydrates are bad

All carbohydrates are not created equal, with some being better than others. We can reap health benefits from carbohydrates by choosing ones with a low glycemic index (GI) such as wholegrain bread, legumes, apples and bananas. These carbohydrates get digested and absorbed by the body slowly, helping to control blood sugar levels and maintain hunger levels between meals.

We can minimise the health risk of bad carbohydrates (high GI carbohydrates that are rapidly absorbed and cause a spike in blood sugar levels) by reducing the amount of refined and processed carbohydrates such as white bread and jasmine rice we eat.

Myth two: Carbohydrates make you fat

Despite being portrayed as the evil nutrient in many fad diets, carbohydrates do not make you fat. The reason low-carbohydrate diets may help with weight loss is because you are eating less kilojoules.

If you avoid all the tasty foods that contain carbohydrates, you’re not left with a huge range to choose from. Carbohydrates shouldn’t be excluded from your diet when trying to lose weight (or at any time). Instead, focus on your portion sizes. A serve of pasta for instance is one cup of cooked pasta, not a large bowl full.

Myth three: Carbohydrates and protein shouldn’t be eaten together

This myth implies that carbohydrates and proteins cannot be eaten together. Fortunately for us this isn’t the case. Imagine how much chaos we would be in if we couldn’t eat these two nutrients together.

Many staples in our diet such as bread, milk, yoghurt and legumes provide a tasty combination of carbohydrates and protein. Your body can handle any combination of nutrients.

Myth four: Carbohydrates are just empty kilojoules

While refined carbohydrates are often low in fibre and high in fat or sugar, smart carbohydrates such as wholegrains are extremely nutritious. They contain fibre that keeps us feeling fuller for longer as well as maintaining bowel health.

Smart carbohydrates are also rich in B vitamins, vitamin E, iron, zinc, magnesium, selenium and antioxidants, and are low in fat. These carbohydrates provide our body with a wealth of nutrition.
