Weird pregnancy cravings

Aussie mums share the bizarre food they craved while pregnant

Take 5 readers reveal their weird pregnancy cravings…

Jaime McDonald, 45, Medowie, NSW.

In bed beside my husband, Jamie, I opened a copy of Take 5.

“Smells amazing!” I gasped.

It was 2017, and I was eight weeks pregnant with our first bub.

Attempting to read, I couldn’t ignore the aroma.

Is this a weird pregnancy craving? I wondered.

I’d been reading Take 5 for years and it’d never smelt this good.

Then, I took a big sniff of the glossy page which filled me with euphoria.

Jamie was wise enough not to comment.

Next evening, I had to know if it tasted as good as it smelt.

A little lick of the contents page didn’t disappoint… but Jamie busted me.

“I won’t make a pregnant woman cry,” he grinned, holding up his hands.

On a cruise before the baby was due, I sat by the pool with my Take 5.

Checking the coast was clear, I tore off a small corner and placed it on my tongue.

This is crazy! I thought. It could be poisonous.

Still, I let the delicious wafer slowly dissolve. It became a regular habit!

After our son, Hamish, was born, my craving vanished.

But a year later, I caught him putting paper from a book in his mouth.

“Hamish! No!” I gasped.

“Well, you did that,” Jamie reminded me.

Perhaps my Take 5 samples gave him a taste for paper!

Natasha Willetts, 41, Seville Grove, WA.

My hairdresser gasped at the uneven ends.

“I’ll shave it all off if you don’t stop!” she threatened.

“But I’ll go hungry!” I joked.

It was 2005 and once morning sickness had stopped, I’d developed a habit of eating my hair.

I had long, brown tresses which, at four months pregnant, I sucked and chewed until it broke off in my mouth.

This is so gross, I’d tell myself. You need to stop.

But I couldn’t.

After a couple of weeks, I felt a lump starting to build up in my throat.

“You have hairballs back there,” my doctor told me. “Like a cat.”

Soon, I began getting stomach cramps and I knew why, but it didn’t stop me from chewing.

Even after Tanayah was born, I still occasionally sucked my locks, but no longer swallowed them.

When I was pregnant with Cooper four years later, my craving for hair was replaced with less weird pregnancy craving: lemon Icy Poles.

Emilia Rossi, 41, Melbourne, Vic.

Popping an ice cube into my mouth, I bit down hard.

I’m going to break my teeth doing this, I cringed.

It was winter 2019 and I had a persistent desire to crunch ice.

I knew it had to do with the child I was carrying, even though I hadn’t had cravings with our first baby, Hercule, two.

One night, my husband, Socrates, suggested we get dinner delivered.

Polishing off the ginger beer that came with our meal, I couldn’t resist popping an ice cube into my mouth.

It shattered easily.

I realised takeaway stores somehow have hollow ice cubes, perfect for my need to crunch without chipping a tooth!

Next night, I recruited Uber Eats again to order a large McDonald’s Coke.

Fill the whole cup with ice, I specified.

When it arrived I tipped out the dribble of drink, squeezed some lime over the ice and began chomping. It brought my mouth to life!

“Do what you gotta do,” Socrates laughed.

I saw out the third trimester ordering three large cups of ice a week.

But once our daughter, Olympia, arrived, my desire for Macca’s ice cubes completely melted.

Samantha Murdoch, 37, Gympie, Qld.

Walking into the café on my lunchbreak, I nervously approached the counter.

“Do you have any dirty, raw potato skins?” I asked the owner.

She seemed alarmed.

“I’m not sure why, but I really feel like them,” I explained.

“We don’t, I’m afraid,” she answered.

Dissatisfied, I returned to work.

It was 2006 and I’d discovered my craving for dirty potato skins after popping a peeling into my mouth while preparing dinner one night.

That’s so good! I’d marvelled. It must have to do with the baby growing inside me.

Samantha at 40 weeks pregnant (Image: supplied)

Next morning, I returned to the café for a cold drink before work.

“We’re doing potato bake!” the owner smiled at me. “I put it on the menu so we’d have skins for you.”

I was so grateful for her thoughtfulness.

Lunchtime couldn’t come fast enough.

At the café, the kind lady handed me a cold takeaway container full of peelings.

Dashing to the park, I devoured the whole lot.

Because they’d been kept in the fridge they were crunchy and refreshing but the flavour combo of potato and soil still coating them was strangely satisfying.

From then on, when my work mates would invite me to join them for a kebab at lunchtime my response was the same.

“I can’t, I’ve got to have my dirty potato skins,” I told them.

“You’re a freak, Sam,” they teased, but they soon clocked my lunch choice was pregnancy-related.

This pining for dirty potato peelings stopped once my daughter, Kaitlyn, was born but I’m sure my colleagues kept laughing about it long after!

  • Cravings are a normal pregnancy phenomenon which usually start at around 12 weeks.
  • Although these cravings are not fully understood, they are likely linked to the heightened sense of smell and changes in the salivary glands and tastebuds during pregnancy.
  • Weird pregnancy cravings for non-food items is a condition called pica. It may indicate a mineral deficiency or severe anaemia. Pregnant women with pica should notify their doctor or midwife.
  • Common, not-so weird pregnancy cravings include ice cream, peanut butter, and pickles.

MKR’s Matilda Brown and Scott Gooding open up their new cookbook and beautiful home

‘Scott taught me to love food’.
(Image: Phillip Castleton)

Matilda Brown is a foodie entrepreneur and co-author of the newly released The Good Farm Cookbook, but her relationship with food hasn’t always been easy.

“I grew up a pretty curvy teenager and went on fad diet after fad diet to try and lose weight,” explains the daughter of actors Bryan Brown and Rachel Ward.

FOOD JOURNEY

“I had eating disorders all through my 20s, and it wasn’t until I met Scott [Gooding, her husband], who being a nutritionist and someone who is so into health, that I learned about nutrition and what my body needed,” Matilda, 37, shares with Woman’s Day from the couple’s family home in Sydney’s Whale Beach.

“And I learned to love food again because food was my enemy for so long.”

Chatting with Woman’s Day on the deck overlooking the ocean in their retro-styled fibro house, the couple say it was Matilda’s mum, actor Rachel Ward, 66, who inspired them to research the concept of regenerative farming while Scott was writing his cookbook The Sustainable Diet

Asked what they would want their last meal to be, Scott chose roast chicken while Matilda wants a tomahawk steak! (Image: Phillip Castleton)

The former My Kitchen Rules (MKR) contestant and chef, 48, has also launched The Good Farm Shop – a range of ready-meals made from regeneratively farmed animals and sustainably sourced ingredients.

Rachel has turned the family’s farm in Nambucca Heads into a fully fledged regenerative cattle farm. Matilda spent an idyllic childhood there, roaming the land, “spotting snakes, collecting eggs from the coop, and playing kick the can with the cousins and Dad.”

Struggling to find any local butchers who sold regenerative meat, the couple took matters into their own hands and started a cow-share directly from their farm, and from that The Good Farm Shop was born.

Initially a butchery, the shop has morphed into supplying a line of ethically sourced ready meals. Ensuring that each ingredient is farmed in a sustainable and humane way mirrors the way the couple want to live on the earth.

“These things really hone the importance of provenance of food to us,” says Scott.

FAMILY AFFAIR

The couple with their cute blended family. (Image: Instagram)

The couple wrote their book together over nine months in between raising their children Tashi,15; Zan, 5; and Anouk, 3, with Scott handling the recipes while Matilda wrote the accompanying stories.

“We started with our bestsellers at The Good Farm Shop and let our minds wander into what we’re cooking week in, week out at home,” Scott says.

“Then with the recipes we say, ‘How do I make that mine? How do we make it gluten free? How do we ensure that the oils are anti-inflammatory?’” he says, revealing he looks at making it as healthy as possible.

While she no longer spends as much time in the kitchen, Matilda says she still enjoys creating meals for her loved ones, especially her kids. “They’re always up for helping out, but it’s mostly a hindrance,” she laughs.

“My eldest son Tashi is pretty handy in the kitchen and he’s quite meticulous,” says Scott. “He doesn’t cook like I would think a teenager would cook.”

While the kids are happy to help cook dinner, getting them to eat it can be a struggle. “It becomes a bit of a wrestling match between what they want to eat, which is something sweet, versus what we want them to eat, like protein and vegies,” admits Matilda.

Their favourite Aussie foods are “something on the barbie” and lamingtons. (Image: Phillip Castleton)

While the recipes are largely inspired by the ones Scott’s parents used to cook in their pub in England, Matilda’s famous parents, actor Bryan, 77, and Rachel, have also written their favourite meals into the book.

“Dad loves the steak and chips with black olive butter, and while Mum loves all of Scott’s cooking, her favourite is the fish pie,” Matilda says.

To embrace provenance, Scott and Matilda say cut out the supermarkets. “Purchase directly from a farm and cut out the middleman.”

Jules Robinson and Cam Merchant offer a glimpse inside family life

A new TV show and baby!
Loading the player...

When Cam Merchant and Jules Robinson met and married on MAFS five years ago, they could never have imagined just how much their lives would change and exceed even their wildest dreams.

The long-awaited arrival of gorgeous Carter five weeks ago capped off what has been an incredible journey for Jules, 42, and Cam, 40, who can’t help but break into huge smiles as they watch three-year-old Ollie kiss and cuddle his baby brother.

“The highlight for me has been watching Ollie become a brother. On the day I became a mother of two, he became a brother and that’s been beautiful to watch,” Jules tells Woman’s Day.

“Ollie loves his baby Carter,” says Jules of the sibling bond. (Image: INLINE IMAGES)

MIRACLE BABY

Cam’s equally besotted and calls Carter their miracle baby, not because they did IVF or that there were any last-minute emergencies, but simply because he feels so thrilled to have another child to love.

“I think when you go into the intricate detail of what it takes to bring a little human into the world that every child is a miracle,” he says, adding that he and Jules tried for two years before conceiving naturally.

Pregnancy and parenting an active little boy wouldn’t leave a lot of spare time for most couples, but Cam and Jules have crammed so much more into the last six months, starting
a home renovation, launching her first book – and secretly filming a new show!

“There are a lot of things going on in our lives, but we’re a team and we make it work somehow,” explains Jules, who is the host of a unique new makeover show called Renovate Me Please.

Beauty and style queen Jules joins forces with Cam, who is now a mental health advocate, and last year’s winners of The Block, Steph and Gian Ottavio, to renovate someone’s look, wardrobe, confidence and home.

“It’s very from the inside out,” Jules says. “The great thing about this concept is that as the viewer you can take value and be like, I can do those little changes to myself and make a difference in my life, and I think the public will enjoy that.”

When the show – that you can only watch on Instagram or TikTok – debuted just over a week ago, more than 250,000 watched the first reel, which featured Tristan Black, who was on MAFS earlier this year.

Jules says it was a “no-brainer” to pick Tristan to kick off the series because she felt the “whole nation fell in love” with the humble bachelor, who didn’t end up with his TV bride Cassandra Allen, but endeared himself to fans.

‘The highlight has been watching Ollie become a brother’. (Image: Instagram)

“This is new for us and we’re just giving it our best and being ourselves and sharing positivity in the world,” she says, before bursting out laughing when asked if Renovate Me Please could end up competing with MAFS or The Block.

“We’d like to think this show is more about spreading joy.”

Little Carter has certainly brought the celebrity couple much joy since arriving, although Jules, who shared much of her pregnancy journey on social media with her 750,000 followers, says it hasn’t all
been smooth sailing.

“We’re right in the thick of it,” she says, admitting that she cried every day for the first 18 days after Carter was born.

“That’s just becoming a new mum, it’s just a hormonal, emotional rollercoaster!” Cam, who she calls her “amazing rock”, also admits “not every day is rainbows and unicorns”, revealing they were considering IVF when Jules fell pregnant naturally with Carter.

“We’re so blessed, so grateful. We have a wonderful life, but trust me, it’s not all amazing, it’s a lot of hard work. We look back [on MAFS] and we met at a perfect point in our life,” he says.

King Charles in crisis: ‘I can’t save this family!’

He's headed to an early grave.
Loading the player...

Thin, frail and with his head in his hands, King Charles looks like a man with the weight of the world on his shoulders as he greets the grieving families of the stabbing victims from the Southport tragedy.

And while royal sources are at pains to assure the public that King Charles is in good health and getting back to work, there are concerns that the King is not as well as the palace PR team would have us believe.

On top of battling cancer and his royal duties, Charles is also carrying the burden of a family torn apart by rifts and squabbling.

King Charles should be resting at Balmoral, but he's dealing with warring relatives.

KING CHARLES FAMILY AT ODDS

“Charles does look at the current state of his family with deep concern. Everyone, it seems, has issues, whether it be health, financial, legal – and not many of them are getting on as well as he’d like,” a royal insider shares.

“This situation with Andrew and the Royal Lodge has somewhat divided the family – or at least shown who is still stuck on loyalties to his mother, the previous monarch – with Anne, Sophie and Edward all disappointed in how he’s handled it.

“Then there’s the diabolical situation between his two beloved sons. Charles cannot believe what Harry’s done and it’s changed William forever.

The drama over the Royal Lodge and Prince Andrew is causing tension between the King, Sarah Ferguson and princesses Beatrice and Eugenie.

Now William’s made it clear he doesn’t want Harry at his coronation – something that breaks Charles’ heart. He never gave up hope the two could be reconciled, but it’s not looking like it will happen in his lifetime.

“There are fallouts with Sarah, Beatrice and Eugenie, who are deeply concerned Andrew is not being protected. He’s even managed to upset Camilla as she’s the one always bearing the brunt of his irritability.”

At Balmoral for the summer, Charles, 75, is finding it hard to take a break from the pressures of the top job, even though he knows how important it is that he relax.

Prince William has reportedly decided he won’t invite Prince Harry to his coronation. (Image: Getty)

REST MORE, STRESS LESS

“He feels like despite planning meticulously all his life for his ascension to the throne, everything’s ended in disaster. He fears his very brief reign will go down as some kind of plague on the nation with the ‘King of feuds’ on the throne,” says the insider, adding that despite Camilla’s assurances to the contrary he can’t help but worry that he’s failed his family, his country and, worst of all, his late mother.

“The big fear is that all these problems are adding to the King’s stress levels, and top of his ‘doctor’s orders’ list is to avoid stressful situations.

He’s been seeking spiritual counsel, not just for the many health problems afflicting his family, but also to help him stay calm through very stormy waters,” the insider reveals.

“Balmoral was supposed to have been a restorative time for the whole family, but with all the ongoing issues it turned out to be anything but.

“Charles needs to break away from all the family strife, which is why he’s looking forward to his trip to Australia with Camilla. It will give them both a most welcome chance to relax and share some very special experiences.”

Inside George Clooney and Brad Pitt’s decades-long Hollywood bromance

"They go way back".
Loading the player...

George Clooney, 63, and Brad Pitt, 60, go way back. And for nearly a quarter century, they’ve had one of the strongest bromances that Hollywood has ever seen.

The two actors’ history began when they both auditioned for Thelma & Louise, which aired in 1991. Brad beat out George for the role.

In an interview with GQ, George, who still hasn’t gotten over it, said, “The funny part is that I was one of the last people in the running for Thelma & Louise. And then when he got it – I knew it was going to be a big film, but I didn’t know it was going to be like that.

“And his career was like this [George mimes something going way up] and I’m still doing some bad TV show or something. I wouldn’t watch Thelma & Louise for a couple of years,” he joked.

Then Brad made sure to add, “Don’t forget, we’re also competitive motherf*ckers. We are. I mean, all of us. Damon. All of us.”

The two have a rapport that’s just so fun to be around. But it’s sweet too. After Brad’s comment, George said, “I want to beat you at any job. But if I don’t get it, I would like you to get it.”

The duo are currently at the annual Venice Film Festival, debuting Wolfs.(Image: Getty)

THE BEGINNING OF A LONG FRIENDSHIP

Brad acknowledged the moment that really stood out to him was when George spoke up after Princess Diana’s tragic passing.

Reflecting on how badly they’ve been hounded by the paparazzi, Brad said, “Oh my God. And you stop at a stoplight, and they all get out and it’s flash-flash-flash-flash-flash-flash.

“And you can’t see anything, and you can’t move because you’re trapped between cars at a stoplight. It’s a horrible feeling.

“It’s really invasive to know people are out there and they’re hiding in the bushes.

“So George got up and commented on that after Princess Diana. And that’s when I saw: This guy’s got something that the rest of us don’t. Like, I saw the leader in that moment.”

SO MANY MOVIES

The friends have starred in numerous movies together. They first graced the big screen together, however,  in 2001’s remake of Ocean’s Eleven, which also starred Julia Roberts, Matt Damon, Casey Affleck, Bernie Mac and more.

The two friends, both named PEOPLE’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ in the early 2000s, later reunited for two more installments of the heist comedy, starring in Ocean’s Twelve in 2004 and Ocean’s Thirteen three years later in 2007.

Sixteen years after sharing the big screen together in 2008’s Burn After Reading, Brad and George have reunited for Wolfs, an action comedy set to hit theaters in September 2024.

REUNITED FOR ‘WOLFS’

The highly anticipated movie, written and directed by Jon Watts, sees Brad and George playing rival ‘fixers’ hired for the same job – two highly competent men who may (finally) be aging out of the job.

The duo are currently at the annual Venice Film Festival, debuting Wolfs. Taking advantage of the beautiful Italian seaside city, Brad and his new girlfriend Ines de Ramon joined George and his wife Amal for a double-date dinner outing.

Claims in the New York Times said the friends were paid “more than $35 million each” for their roles in Wolfs. However, George was quick to comment.

He said, “[It was] an interesting article and whatever her source was for our salary, it is millions and millions and millions of dollars less than what was reported.

“And I am only saying that because I think it’s bad for our industry if that’s what people think is the standard bearer for salaries. I think that’s terrible, it’ll make it impossible to make films.”

WHEN THE ROAD GETS ‘BUMPY’

In the most recent issue of GQ, George and Brad opened up about their enduring friendship. At one point, the interviewer asked point black – are you guys actually friends?

After a few playful jabs and a joke about restraining orders, George said, “Yeah, man, we’re friends. We’ve been friends for a long time.

“And it’s fun because we also check in on each other every once in a while, which is an important part of this. Things get complicated in life and you always have to make sure everybody’s okay.”

Brad added, “George is probably the best at understanding, seeing the chessboard and the potential moves. I’ll call George on numerous occasions when things get bumpy.”

More bunny ears… (Image: Getty)

A source, who spoke to PEOPLE in February, said Hollywood friends were excited to collaborate on another movie together.

“Brad and George are forever friends,” the source said. “They like and respect each other no matter how many years in between gigs together. They go way back, and were happy to work together on this film.”

Wolfs was a meaty project and both took a real interest in it,” the source added. “They are excited about the film, and enjoying the hell out of it as time leads up to the release.”

Wolfs opens in theatres on 20th September and will be available to stream on Apple TV+ on 27 September. No subscription? No worries. Sign up today for a free week and only $12.99/month after that.

The shocking amount of money My Kitchen Rules contestants actually get paid

Don't quit your day jobs aspiring chefs.
Loading the player...

The life of a reality TV star may seem glamorous, but if you’re thinking of signing up to My Kitchen Rules, we wouldn’t recommend you do it for the money.

While the winners are rewarded with $250,000, if you don’t make it all the way to the very end, it’s another story.

With the 2024 season of My Kitchen Rules just days away, we’ve lifted the lid on how much contestants actually get paid – and and we suspect it’s a little bit less than what judges Manu Feildel and Colin Fassnidge make.

According to a report from the Daily Telegraph, contestants on reality shows including My Kitchen Rules are given a meagre $100 per day to cover expenses. That’s less than minimum wage!

However, an unnamed source revealed that contestants were each paid $1000 a week, but it was “a stretch” seeing as they had to pay for their groceries out of that amount during practice.

“It’s hard. We were spending up to $600 a week on food because you’re encouraged to cook as much as possible,” the insider said.

Regardless, contestants aren’t left with much cash to splash.

Season five runner up Kelly Ramsey, who told news.com.au in 2014 that she was falsely painted as a villain with partner Chloe, said that she even had to move back home with her parents.

She added that while they were offered a counsellor by the network, “that doesn’t help you find a job or pay your mortgage”.

“We have no money, I have people trolling my work to fire me, I was in hospital on Sunday with exhaustion. It cuts your whole soul, it cuts your being,” Kelly said at the time.

“I’ve got Chloe’s wedding, and I’m having to pay for that, moving back home with my parents, I think it all just got a bit too much.”

Piper O’Neill competed on the show in 2019 and was later awarded $22,000 a year in compensation from Channel Seven for psychological injury. In April 2021 she shed light on what she was paid while on the show.

“I was paid $500 per week for being on the show. I was given an additional $500 a week for food for myself to eat and to aid in the purchase of food that would need to be bought and to practise cooking for the show,” she told the personal injury commission of New South Wales.

Past winners have received between $100,000 and an eye-watering quarter of a million dollars. But that’s nothing compared to what the judges must get paid!

We can’t hack into their bank accounts, but we doubt the judges are strapped for cash.

French native Manu Feildel, whose restaurant L’Etoile closed four months after opening in 2014, bought a Maroubra property for $1.9 million in 2015 and former judge Pete Evans and his family purchased one in 2013 for $1.44 million.

But perhaps the hosting gig is tougher than it looks, as Manu admitted to The Courier Mail that he unleashed on a contestant.

“I remember when someone giggled at me and I just lost it. I said, “You want to swap jobs, because I can win that money cooking but you couldn’t do my job,” and that was it,” he said.

Where are the past winners of My Kitchen Rules now? See how far they’ve come since claming victory

We know about Colin and Manu, but what about the rest?
Loading the player...

With a new year comes a new season of My Kitchen Rules, and we’re preparing ourselves for more pot stirring, both literally and figuratively.

Over the years, we’ve seen a range of characters prove to Manu Feildel and Colin Fassnidge that they are Australia’s best amateur cooking duo from the fierce and fiesty to the sweet and smiley.

“We always want to get a good mix,” Manu previously explained to Now To Love of the casting process.

“Food is number one but we also want to have different personalities. It’s like a puzzle – we need to put the pieces together. “

It’s been a while since My Kitchen Rules last hit our screens, so ahead of the new season let’s find out what the past champs have been cooking up.

Season one: Veronica and Shadi (2010)

When this loved-up duo first entered the series they said their dream was to have kids in “abundance”. Twelve years later, the duo certainly made that dream a reality and have four children, Antonia, 10, Elena, eight, Giselle, seven, and five-year-old Julius.

The Abrahams also went on to open Ave’ Cucina & Coffee Bar in Coorparoo, Queensland but due to their busy schedules have traded in their ownership.

Season two: Sammy and Bella (2011)

Since their big win, the Polish Jakubiak sisters have launched a Sydney-based catering company called Bella’s Feast.

They also opened up Sammy’s Burger Bar and made regular TV appearances cooking up culinary delights on Seven’s The Morning Show.

Bella wed MAFS alum James Webster while Sammy appeared as a guest judge on the Polish version of MasterChef.

These days they have their own show on Ten Play called Sammy & Bella’s Kitchen Rescue – they did well for themselves!

Season three: Leigh and Jennifer (2012)

The “princesses” weren’t on speaking terms after the show finished filming. (Image: Supplied)

Arguably the first controversial couple to enter the show, Leigh Saxton and Jennifer Evans were instantly dubbed “princesses” by viewers.

The former best friends were not on speaking terms after the show wrapped.

“I’d send her ‘Hello, how are you?’ texts or an email, and nothing would come back to me, and it’s really sad,” Leigh revealed to Woman’s Day.

In 2016 she split from her husband and firmly believes the show (and the fans) are to blame, telling the outlet she “really struggled” after the media frenzy.

“It definitely had something to do with the failure of our marriage because I hated myself after the show and began to doubt everything I did, which really frustrated Wayne, because he’s my biggest fan.”

Season four: Dan and Steph (2013)

Queenslanders Dan and Steph are proud parents to Emmy. (Image: Instagram @danandsteph13)

The self-confessed underdogs opened up their restaurant, Eat @ Dan & Steph’s in Hervey Bay, Queensland.

In 2015, the Mulherons gave birth to a daughter, Emmy, via IVF and shortly after launched their own children’s clothing range, Eat with Emmy.

The pair returned to MKR in 2020 for The Rivals season, but didn’t win.

Season five: Bree and Jessica (2014)

Mums Bree May and Jessica Liebich won the heart of the nation not only with their yummy creations but by their friendly approach to the competition.

Despite claims that their friendship dwindled under the pressure, the ladies are still as thick as thieves – Jess is the children’s chef at Casa Bambini Early Learning, while Bree works in catering and has her own ketchup line, Ketchup According To Bree.

Season six: Will and Steve (2015)

The cooking careers of former bankers Will Stewart and Steve Flood, dubbed “The Gourmet Pommies”, went gangbusters post-MKR.

The pair enjoyed stints on Studio 10, released a cookbook, Home Cook, Aspiring Chef, and head up Butcher & The Farmer restaurant as executive chefs.

They later became ambassadors for RUOK after Will revealed he has suffered with anxiety and depression all his life.

“I think the show was a great stepping stone for the future but in life, lots of doors open, you still have to walk through it and then turn one opportunity into another and another,” Steve told Mamamia in 2019.

Season seven: Tasia and Gracia (2016)

Since their win, the Seger sisters have launched their own catering company, Tasia & Gracia, offering up private dining experiences for a range of events and celebrations.

They’ve also capitalised on merchandising, selling everything from Tasia & Gracia aprons to branded satay sauce.

“Being on My Kitchen Rules was always something we wanted to be apart of but never took the risk until 2016,” the wrote on their shared blog.

“The experience was one of the best thing that ever happened to us. We met so many incredible people who are talented, kind, funny and most of all share the same passion as us that is our love of food.”

The post continued: “In return it has given us endless opportunities for us to excel in this food industry and pursuit our careers in food.

“We are constantly developing new fusions within traditional Asian cooking, combining innovative dishes and modernising plating. Our most used ingredients: chilli, garlic, onion, shallots and rice — are reflective of our Asian heritage.”

Season eight: Amy and Tyson (2017)

Dubbed the best home cooks of 2017, the Murr siblings’ culinary career path has been a slow burner.

“I’ve been working really hard this past year to follow my dreams and become a qualified chef and today there’s proof in the pudding,” Tyson told Instagram followers in November 2018.

Now he is Chef de Cuisine at The Bauer Kitchen and is looking very loved up with his new wife Kennie Merkley who he wed at Lake Como, Italy in mid 2022.

They previously embarked on a foodie tour of Tasmania in October 2018 and both Amy and Tyson are still in contact with fellow contestants Della Muscat and Tim Attiwill.

Partners Alex Clark and Emily O’Kane got been busy cooking up a future together after their 2018 win, announcing their engagement in months later.

Emily broke down in tears after Alex got down on one knee at sunset on Venice Beach in LA.

“After ‘macgyvering’ my way to get this organised and hidden from the most beautiful but nosiest woman I know, the day couldn’t of been more perfect, sunsets on Venice beach are pretty special so had to make the most on the backdrop!

“She had no idea, there were tears, there were laughs and there was a YES!!!” Alex captioned his Instagram post.

Newcastle boys Matt Gawthrop and Luke Stewart returned to their regular jobs following their 2019 win but had plans to make cooking a permanent career.

“We’re currently trying to work together on a few ideas we’ve had. There are a few little things in the pipeline,” Luke told New Idea.

“We are keen to stick with our passions and see if we can integrate food into the things that we love to do already.”

Season 11: Jake & Elle (MKR: The Rivals, 2020)

The second time’s the charm for 2020 winners Jake and Elle, who faced off against Dan and Steph to win the MKR: The Rivals season.

It was a bittersweet moment for the siblings, who couldn’t be together to watch the final due to COVID-19.

However, they said the prize money was a godsend for their business Jake & Elle’s Kitchen following the madness of the pandemic.

I tested menopause skincare brands and here are my favourites

Hear me out - targeted skincare for meno skin is not a waste of money!
Loading the player...

I am a Lifestyle Director, which means I’m surrounded by beauty products, health ideas, wellness apps and fashion tips every single day. One thing that Beauty Editors I work with get asked about a lot is this: What are the best skincare brands for menopausal skin?

You see, one thing you notice when you hit menopause is that your skin changes and suddenly you’re faced with having to get skincare specifically made for ageing skin. And it’s really hard to know exactly what you can use to help your skin as it goes through those changes. I know. I’m 50-something myself.

But there is some good news – these days there are so many skincare brands making products just for us menopausal ladies, and they really work. In fact, some of them are my favourite brands of all time. Here are my votes when it comes to menopause skincare brands and the products I swear by.

Trinny London

I’ve long been a fan of Trinny’s skincare – I swear by a homemade cocktail of Bounce Back ($92) and Energise Me ($79) moisturisers, which promise to target wrinkles and dehydration among other things.

I love her Plump Up serum ($130) to, well, plump up my skin, and I’m a sucker for the stackable pots, too.

Trinny London moisturisers Energise Me, $79, and Bounce Back, $92 are both great for menopausal skin

As a woman of a certain age, I think Trinny understands mature skin and I’d say most of her products are heroes for us midlifers. I’d even go so far as to say that in my opinion Trinny London is the perfect menopause skincare brand.

Her latest skin saviour for this generation is The Elevator ($128), a serum which targets the neck and decolletage to visibly lift and define.

To be honest, I’d buy anything Trinny told me to at this point. Her makeup range is great for my skin too, especially the BFF All Day foundation, $75.

Vanessa Megan

My current favourite Aussie skincare brand for menopausal skin is Vanessa Megan. She makes natural skincare that really works. Her Metamorphosis Menopause skincare range is amazing.

The face cream, Emerge ($149), is a hero – rich in phytoestrogens, vitamin C and amino acids, hyaluronic acid and collagen, These are all important for skin to stay hydrated, plump and moisturised. See more of her stuff here.

There’s even more for the menopausal among us. The Other Lips Balm™ is a 100 per cent natural balm to help alleviate dryness and irritation “down there” – one of the less talked about issues when it comes to menopause.

With a hero ingredient of pumpkin seed oil and some of nature’s most moisturising and calming ingredients, this stuff rocks.

Alpha H

This science-led skincare from right here in Australia is the real deal. Their Peri and Menopause Skin Kit is built to support complexions through the changes that we’re going through.

We’re talking dryness and dehydration, fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone, uneven texture, loss of elasticity… you get the drift. Need we say more? If I had to pick one product to start with, I’d say the Golden Haze Face Oil, which you can get a small trial size of here.

WelleCo

Yes, Elle Macpherson is a supermodel but she’s very vocal about how menopause has affected her life. She’s made some of her WelleCo products especially for menopause, including The Goddess Elixir ($60) which isn’t ACTUAL skincare, no, but IS a great addition to the menopause arsenal.

These vegan capsules contain sea buckthorn, red clover and other natural ingredients said to help with symptoms like hot flushes and mood swings. Get in me. *Always read the label and follow directions for use.

Skin Doctors

Anyone going through menopause’s delightful range of symptoms (hello, hot flushes!) will know that cooling down your face at times sounds like the dream.

Skin Doctors Menopause Skin Renew Cooling Face Serum ($74.99) can be used in the morning, and is specially formulated with ingredients like alpine rose stem cells, hyaluronic acid and peptides to help plump up fine lines and wrinkles. Plus, there’s peppermint oil to cool down the skin.

Feeling the hot flush? The Skin Doctors Menopause Skin Renew Cooling Face Serum, $74.99 may help

This age-defying serum is designed for women 45 plus to begin using during peri and early menopause when initial skin changes are first noticed, in order to help to help calm things down and keep skin feeling its best. I get it in Priceline.
