EXCLUSIVE: Beau Ryan says fans can expect lots of “drama” from the 2024 season of The Amazing Race Australia

Time to pack your bags - the show is almost here.
Ten.

The Amazing Race Australia has long been a fan favourite show, with viewers loving not only the awe-inspiring destinations, but also the intensity and emotion that comes along with it.

In 2024, host Beau Ryan says fans should expect lots of “drama.”

Crossing continents and travelling to corners of the world they’ve only dreamed of, this year’s Amazing Race contestants will be embarking on the ultimate adventure.

The best part? 2024 has a star-studded list of 11 celebrities who will be joined by one of their loved ones in the hopes of winning $100,000 for their chosen charity.

“The cast are super determined this year. Not that they haven’t been before but they’re really driven and competitive this year and it’s a good group of people,” Beau Ryan told TV WEEK of this year’s contestants.

The 2024 cast includes Olympic swimmer Ian Thorpe, comedian Luke McGregor, singer and actress Natalie Bassingthwaighte, Matildas stars Chloe Logarzo and Emily Gielnik, UFC fighter Tai “Bam Bam” Tuivasa, TV presenter Peter Helliar, model Jett Kenny, DJ Havana Brown, reality stars Cyrell Paule and Eden Dally, AFL player Billy Brownless, and country singers Brooke McClymont and Adam Eckersley.

Out of all these cast members, it was Matildas players Chloe Logarzo and Emily Gielnik as well as UFC fighter Bam Bam that Beau was most excited to meet.

“I like the Matildas. I mean who doesn’t? They just are on a pedestal, they’re Australia’s sporting team so the Matildas obviously hold a special spot.

“Then there’s Bam Bam – he is an animal. He’s a beast and he’s super competitive, and [is] representing a wonderful charity with his brother.”

“I mean everyone [is great]. We do have a lot of different seriously talented people in the industry but those were the ones where I was like ‘okay, I might need to get something signed after for my daughter.’”

According to Beau, the destinations this year are next level, and the contestants are up for any challenges thrown at them in every city.

They head to Africa, South America, and Asia this season, so “it’s really got everything. All the different conditions, people from all walks of life and really good challenges and a really good cast,” the 39-year-old host shared.

As for his personal favourite destination, Africa is top of the list.

“I’m very lucky I do this for a job. I’ve travelled to every continent, I’ve been everywhere – but Africa is just, it’s special.

“The people are so beautiful and warm and generous and loving. They’ve got a great culture and obviously they’ve got the animals there as well. So Africa is next level,” he explained.

The Amazing Race Australia 2024: Celebrity Edition premieres Monday, 9 September at 7.30pm on 10 and 10Play.

EXCLUSIVE: Alexander McCall Smith: “My books save lives!”

He was recently knighted!
Alexander McCall new book.

Scottish legal scholar and author of the beloved No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series, Alexander McCall Smith is such a prolific writer and creator that he was recently knighted for his services to literature!

Here, the 76-year-old sits down with Woman’s Day to talk books, inspiration and why he can’t wait to come to Australia later this year!

ALEXANDER MCCALL SMITH TELLS ALL

After being knighted, he said, “It’s a wonderful thing, I’m most grateful”. (Image: Instagram)

Why are the novels so popular?
The heroine of that series is a woman who is kind, understanding and intuitive. There is no crime in those books – Mma Ramotswe is, rather, a person who helps others with the issues in their lives. I think that people like her – as do I! The world is such a difficult and often rather sorrowful place – Mma Ramotswe represents the opposite of the confrontational attitudes we see all about us. I think people want that. They want some gentleness and a certain optimism.

Humanity and hope seem to be recurring themes for you. Why?
I find myself interested in the issue of how we negotiate the challenges of life in a world that’s full of conflict.
We must remember the central role that forgiveness plays – we have to forgive, or we’re destined to repeat the same battles time after time. We also need to remind each other of the importance of tolerance and of listening to others.

Author Alexander McCall Smith is back with a new book The Great Hippopotamus Hotel. (Image: Instagram)

What’s the most moving thing a reader has said to you?
On a number of occasions people have said they’ve read my books with a dying spouse. Sometimes they say a family member was reading the book when he or she died. I’ve also had one or two people say to me that Mma Ramotswe saved them from dying by suicide. I’m obviously pretty moved by that.

You were recently knighted. How was that experience?
It was very kind of them. The sword that the King used was quite heavy! You certainly know that you’ve been tapped on the shoulder. I felt most honoured, although it really makes no difference to how you feel inside.

WHAT’S NEXT

After The Great Hippopotamus Hotel, you have another book coming out – give us the elevator pitch!
The Winds From Further West is a novel set in Edinburgh and on the island of Mull. It’s about a medical researcher who is accused of saying something that he didn’t say. He becomes a victim of cancel culture and gives up his job in disgust. On the island of Mull he finds a more tolerant society.

How do you relax?
I enjoy reading. I’m a keen sailor, and I love messing about with boats. I love having coffee or lunch with friends and chatting about any and everything. I like to watch a good TV series. I watched a wonderful Australian series, High Country. I thought it was beautifully filmed and acted.

I am very much looking forward to being back in Australia at the end of the year. I love being there. I love the smells and sounds of the bush – the trees, the sky, the birdsong – everything. Increasingly there are Australian characters in my books. In my new series, The Perfect Passion Company, one of the two principal characters is a young man from Melbourne. I have written quite a few short stories now with an Australian setting.

Out now, Hachette, $28. Buy Big W.

Anna Samson takes the lead in a Death In Paradise spin-off set in Australia

'Roles like this are so rare'
Loading the player...

The “cosy crime” genre is nothing new, but it’s showing no signs of slowing down. In fact, hit UK series Death In Paradise has added an Aussie spin-off to the “Paraverse” – and it’s a project that confessed murder mystery “loser” Anna Samson is thrilled to be a part of.

“I grew up on Agatha Christie – reading Agatha Christie and watching Agatha Christie,” Anna, 34, who moved to Australia from England in her early teens, tells TV WEEK. “And also watching procedurals and murder mysteries on the BBC.”

Being cast as the lead detective in Return To Paradise is a dream for Anna, who gained plenty of fans playing personal trainer Mia Anderson in Home And Away from 2021 to 2022 – a job she describes as “chalk and cheese” compared to her new gig.

“It’s a very different character,” she explains. “I’m so excited about this show. [I’m] the first female [lead] in the franchise. It just feels like the Paraverse is really expanding.”

Anna leads the Aussie series as Detective Inspector Mackenzie Clarke, a prickly expat cop who returns to her fictional coastal home town of Dolphin Cove after working in London’s Metropolitan Police for the past six years.

“I love Mackenzie and think she’s actually teaching me quite a lot,” she says of her on-screen alter ego. “She’s a character who doesn’t particularly worry if people like her. She’ll leave
a conversation if she finds it boring. She’d leave a party if she found it boring and wouldn’t say goodbye to anyone.

“I think having that ‘upfrontness’ is very liberating for a woman.”

Anna admits she does find it hard to switch off after being in character all day.

“I take her home with me a bit,” she says. “I have to do so much preparation, so the job doesn’t end at the end of the shoot day. It’s an all-consuming job, but it’s brilliant to have a job like this. It’s rare that these types of roles come along.”

The ensemble cast is bolstered by Catherine McClements as Mackenzie’s boss (and former mother-in-law-to-be); Tai Hara as her rather dreamy ex-fiancé Glenn; and Celia Ireland as nosy police volunteer Reggie Rocco.

Anna says her co-stars are a huge part of why she’s loving the new role so much.

“One of the delights of the show is the people I’m working with,” she says. “The cast are, in every way, brilliant: brilliant actors, brilliant humans, brilliant ensemble players, brilliant support. Because I’m in so much of the show, it’s very special to be held by such kind, generous, powerhouses of actors.”

While the show is set in a tiny tropical paradise, it’s actually filmed in the NSW city of Wollongong and in parts of Sydney. The cast and crew had to contend with rather wet conditions when it filmed earlier this year, but for a UK native, that was nothing new.

“I love being on location, because it’s a beautiful part of the world,” Anna says. “Actually, I don’t mind the rain. Like my character, I’m a big fan of London – it’s my favourite city in the world. And you have to like the rain to love London.”

So is a return to the land of her birth on the cards in the future?

“I’d love to be in the UK,” Anna says. “There are a lot of family and friends there. The theatre scene in London is something that appeals to me greatly. But I have a very beautiful, happy life in Australia as well. We’ve got aeroplanes – I could do both!”

Return To Paradise airs Sunday, 7.30pm on ABC.

Darren Purchese reveals why this season of The Great Australian Bake Off is tinged with sadness

'It's been bittersweet'
Loading the player...

In a world where the news seems endlessly grim, the time couldn’t be better for a new season of The Great Australian Bake Off.  And this year is set to be a real “doozy”, judge Darren Purchese says.

“We’ve got a bunch of really diverse, enthusiastic and talented bakers,” the Melbourne-based chef, 49, tells TV WEEK of the much-loved show’s eighth season. “There are the usual themed weeks, but also some stuff we’ve never done before – some spooky stuff, some spicy stuff. It’s going to be a whole lot of fun.”

In the industry for nearly three decades, Darren is a renowned pastry chef, best-selling cookbook author, a business owner and has appeared in several reality cooking shows such as MasterChef Australia and Dessert Masters.

But it’s Bake Off he calls “one of the best jobs I’ve ever had”.

“I’ve loved it forever,” he says. “And I particularly love the Aussie version, because, number one – it’s not in a tent [the UK version is filmed in a marquee], we’re in a shed – I think that’s pretty Aussie.

“And the grounds we shoot on, anyone can walk up. We often have dog walkers popping in – normally [in other shows], the cameras would move away, but we just let it happen. So you’ve got dogs coming in and birds flying around while the bakers are trying to do their showstopper [challenge]. It’s all quite organic. It has real heart and soul.”

Darren admits a big part of the show’s heart will be missing this year, with Cal Wilson getting to complete only half of filming of the season. The New Zealand stand-up comedian, author and radio and TV host died of cancer in October last year aged 53.

“We [the core cast that includes fellow judge Rachel Khoo and host Natalie Tran] weren’t aware of the extent of Cal’s illness, and were holding out hope she’d return, and get better, because we could see she was in pain,” Darren says.

“We think about her every day; we love and miss her dearly. We hit it off from day one, and Cal really was the glue. She looked after us all, so it was tough not having that force in there.

“She was loveliest person. We shared a car to and from the set and became very close. She’d give me tips about learning lines and tell me all about the world of entertainment, while I’d up her knowledge of food.”

Darren says it’ll be difficult to watch the season when it airs.

“It’s bittersweet anytime I see Cal [on TV],” he says. “I’m not looking forward to seeing her last episode – I don’t know if I’ll be able to do it. But, towards the end of the season, we’re going to make sure we pay tribute to her unique sparkle and contribution to the show.”

The Great Australian Bake Off airs Wednesday, September 18, 8.30pm (AEST) on LifeStyle.

Home And Away spoilers: The Summer Bay doctor starts to act strangely at work

What's eating Bree?

Bree goes off the deep end in Home And Away this week, which given she’s a doctor, could have catastrophic consequences.

Still haunted by the death of Felicity (Jacqui Purvis) – who’d collapsed with a brain aneurysm – Bree (Juliet Godwin) is struggling to focus on her responsibilities at the hospital. Instead, she’s fixated on Felicity’s last moments under her care.

“Bree was the doctor in charge of Felicity’s case, and couldn’t save her,” Juliet tells TV WEEK. “She becomes terrified of making a mistake and losing another patient.

“Also, she’s seeing the devastating effect of Flick’s death on her community and feels partly responsible. She starts to doubt her abilities as a doctor, the fear manifesting in a need to control everything and being overly cautious.”

That control is tested when an accident victim is rushed into Emergency. When Bree gets a splash of blood on her medical scrubs, she rushes away to wash it off – leaving nurse Dana (Ally Harris) rattled that she’s been left to deal with the injured man by herself.

“It’s a moment that Bree loses control,” Juliet explains. “Seeing the blood triggers a loop of fearful ‘What if?’ thoughts. She’s frozen and becomes overwhelmed.”

Later, when Dana quizzes Bree about what was going on, she’s still obsessed with the blood stain.

What does this mean for Bree – and the Summer Bay community, who rely so much on her?

Has the time come for Frasier to return to the radio?

Air to the throne
Loading the player...

The more things change for Frasier Crane, the more they stay the same. And that’s great news for fans of the hit comedy series that returned to our screens last year after a 19-year break – because, if the teasers and hints are real, we’re in for a few very familiar faces and a major return to Dr Crane’s roots this year.

For a start, it seems his time in the radio studio might not be over. It’s a plotline that was teased in the season one finale when Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) was surprised by a visit from his old producer and ascerbic sparring partner Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin).

It seems Roz will be sticking around, along with guest stars Dan Butler as Bob “Bulldog” Briscoe, and Edward Hibbert as Gil Chesterton – both old colleagues from when Frasier hosted a call-in psychiatry show in Seattle.

And there’s a reason for that, the season two trailer quickly showed, with Frasier back behind the microphone intoning his immortal line, “This is Dr Frasier Crane… I’m listening.”

Is it a one-off visit for old-time’s sake or has Frasier decided to give up his academic life and head back to the airwaves? That’s the question that will play out through the year as Frasier continues to chase common ground with his estranged son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott).

He’ll also be perfecting his “grumpy Muppet” double act with his old friend Alan (Nicholas Lyndhurst) and trying to figure out if he’s ready for another relationship.

Candidates for that could be season-two newcomers Doc Stathos, (Amy Sedaris) – who makes no secret of the fact she’s a big fan of Frasier – or Holly (Patricia Heaton), a hospitality worker who catches the good doctor’s eye.

But wait, there’s more! True Frasier fans will recall Roz had a daughter named Alice, who was a friend of Freddy’s, but also had a not-so-secret crush on him.

This season, Alice (played by Kelsey Grammer’s real-life daughter Greer) is due for a reappearance, with a mission to “catch up with Freddy… and complicate whatever romantic plans he may have”.

Old faces? Check. An old setting? Check. An old character here to shake things up? Check. Joining in as Kelsey sings “Tossed Salads And Scrambled Eggs” at the end of every episode? Check. What more could fans want?

Season two of Frasier airs on Paramount+ on September 20. Subscribe now from $9.99/mth, with a 7-day trial.

Deadly sabotage

Terese falls victim to a vengeful act gone wrong in Neighbours this week when she innocently borrows a car, not knowing its brakes had been cruelly tampered with, and crashes it into a tree.

As Terese (Rebekah Elmaloglou) lies unconscious with a head injury and surrounded by toxic fumes, it’s not certain she’ll survive.

The horrific crash comes after Felix (James Beaufort) – recovering in hospital after being stabbed in a prison brawl – awakes from a groggy sleep to overhear his roommate, shady IT conman Wade Fernsby (Stephen Phillips), making a call about a wedding and getting payback.

When Felix tells his police officer brother Andrew (Lloyd Will) what he’s heard, he grills Wade. But, getting nowhere, he decides to maintain a subtle police presence at Haz (Shiv Palekar) and Mackenzie’s (Georgie Stone) wedding. Haz has a fierce enemy in Wade, who blames him for tipping off the police to his illegal dealings and landing him behind bars.

“Andrew knows Wade will do anything to get revenge,” Lloyd, 34, tells TV WEEK. “Which puts a lot of people in danger.”

When Felix recognises an ex-crim he knows near what’s meant to be a car for Haz and Mackenzie, he alerts Andrew. But by the time he gets there, the vehicle is gone. There is, however, a trail of fluid where it had been…

First responders wheel Terese away on a stretcher from the crash site

Former Big Brother housemate Hannah is back on TV with her boyfriend Lawrence in My Kitchen Rules 2024

'MKR is much harder!'

Having appeared on Big Brother in 2020, and having recently filmed My Kitchen Rules with her boyfriend Lawrence, Hannah has no doubt which one she’d rather do again.

“I thought if I can do Big Brother, being locked in a house with randoms, I could do MKR,” she tells TV WEEK. “But let me tell you, MKR was 1000 times harder. I would do Big Brother every single year if I could. MKR, I don’t think I’d go back and do that!”

Hannah and Lawrence, a filmmaker and actor who has appeared in The Twelve and The Claremont Murders, have been dating for almost two years.

“Let me tell you, I kissed lots of frogs,” Hannah laughs, “but they all led me to my Prince Charming.”

The WA couple are keen to get married, and they’ve agreed to start trying for a baby in just under a year.

“We’ve got to wait till I’m 32 and then pop goes the weasel!” Hannah adds. “I love babies.”

Lawrence’s mother passed away when he was just two years old. For much of his childhood, his family struggled with shared meals and celebrations.

“You’re constantly thinking about the person who’s missing,” he explains.

After meeting Hannah, food became a more important part of Lawrence’s life.

“I just realised how food and family and love, it all comes together.”

Hannah and Lawrence, sitting next to Simone, listen to another guest talking at an instant restaurant.

In the first round of MKR’s instant restaurants this week, Hannah stirs up drama by reporting on something said behind one team’s back – and also sharing some very interesting information about another contestant.

“I’m the table gossiper,” she admits. “I just don’t know when to shut my mouth.”

But Lawrence insists that Hannah is “actually the most truthful, honest person you’ll meet”.

“I think it took people some time to adjust to the ball of energy and honesty that is Hannah.”

The Block Island’s Kylie says: ‘I’m out too!’ as drama intensifies

"It's my way or the highway."
Loading the player...

Word has it this is the week that Jesse and Paige pack their bags and say bye-bye to Block Island. But they may not be the only ones…

We hear Kylie also threatens to quit when she thinks the WA couple are being replaced by Block All Stars Georgia Caceres and her husband Ronnie.

In awkward scenes that an insider says will play out on camera, Kylie makes her feelings about Georgia clear and snubs her.

According to an insider, Scotty Cam is then forced to make desperate calls to the outspoken mother-of-four to prevent her from quitting too.

Convinced the couple have been recruited to take over Jesse and Paige’s house with an unfair advantage, Kylie threatens to head home and says, “I’m out!”.

And while we hear a panicked Scotty is able to convince her to stay, a source claims it was only temporary.

An insider has made the eyebrow-raising allegation that Kylie follows through on her threats and actually exits The Block early.

“Kylie had a huge blow-up at the end of week twelve and quit the show,” a source alleges on the So Dramatic! podcast.

“Not sure how it will play out on TV and how they will edit it. We’ve got to wait and see as well,” Brad previously told Woman’s Day.

And Kylie herself hinted that there’s more drama to come amongst the couples.

There’s even more drama to come. (Image: Nine)

“We create that within our own households this year,” she told Woman’s Day when asked who this year’s villain would be.

“We have no idea [what they will show] and I guess what you think would never go on, always goes on,” says Kylie, who’s worried about what will be shown of her  relationship.

“But that’s us in our household anyway, it’s my way or the highway.”

EXCLUSIVE: The Bachelor Australia star Anna Heinrich opens up about being a mum

"I love being a girl mum!"
Loading the player...

For Anna Heinrich, motherhood isn’t just a role – it’s a joy-filled adventure. En route to her sister Andrea Heinrich’s wedding in the Southern Highlands, the former Bachelor stars Anna, 37, and husband Tim Robards, 41, who welcomed their second daughter earlier this year, reflect on the beautiful chaos that is family life with Woman’s Day.

“I feel incredibly fortunate,” Anna muses, her voice full of affection as she speaks about her daughters, Elle, almost four, and Ruby, just five months, who are the centre of her universe.

EMBRACING MOTHERHOOD

Loading the player...

The video of their sweet first meeting got nine million views on Instagram. “She’s very much a girly girl,” Anna said with a smile, referring to gorgeous Ellie, who has already made her TV debut, starring in a string of DoorDash ads – and is a natural.

“She always wants to dress up, borrow all my makeup and everything. I think I’m going to have to give in and get her nails painted very soon. She’s always putting on her little heels. She’s always waiting to wear a dress. I’m like, ‘Can we just put these pants on?'”

The bond between sisters is something Anna holds dear, having grown up as one of three girls. With her sister’s wedding on the next day, family ties feel even more poignant.

“For me, it’s always been about having that really beautiful relationship with a sister. I hope Elle and Ruby grow up to be the best of friends. I know they will.”

Motherhood, while immensely rewarding, has its challenges.

Anna says Tim is a very hands-on and loving dad. (Image: Instagram)

“My life had already changed and I was already a parent, but the juggle is definitely harder now,” Anna says of having two girls.

With her and Tim both balancing careers – Anna co-founded wellness and beauty supplement brand Intu Wellness – their schedules are meticulously planned to ensure that someone is always there for the girls.

“Time is quite precious now.”

JUGGLING ACT

When asked how they find time for themselves, Anna shares a relatable truth – “You have to just go out and do it on your own,” she laughed.

“Before having children, Tim and I could, if we wanted to, go and get a massage together. But now it’s like, OK, you go out for a run, a walk, or whatever it may be, to sort of de-stress.”

When asked what kind of mum she is, she playfully asks, “What would you say Tim? What sort of mum am I?”

Tim, ever the supportive husband, doesn’t miss a beat. “Caring and giving,” he responds, his tone full of pride.

Anna grins, adding, “Tim’s very hands-on and very active.”

In August, Anna’s role as a Huggies ambassador led to a toddler-friendly pop-up spa in Sydney for parents and their little ones to enjoy.

“Elle, before going to bed, always asks for a kiss, a hug and a massage,” she says.

“Even Ruby sometimes, we give her a little foot massage, and it really sort of calms her.”

Huggies, the trusted name in baby care, has also launched the first-ever Australian Huggies Babywear collection, which is available now exclusively through Big W. Combining baby comfort and care to create a range of adorable and practical clothing and accessories for newborns and toddlers.

Now in a range of soft, certified organically grown cotton fabrics designed with a modern, simple aesthetic. This collection promises to provide comfort and style for the little ones at competitive prices.
