Arsonist Jenny Hayes killed my family as they slept

(L to R) Abbey, me, Dad and Mum
  • Emily Forrest’s sister Abbey was an amazing aunt to her nephew, Arlo, and couldn’t wait to have a baby of her own
  • Sisters Emily and Abbey had a close relationship and rode horses together all the time
  • When Abbey was 19 she visited Emily with some exciting news: she was pregnant
  • Abbey and her partner, Inderpal welcomed a daughter Ivy into the world and were besotted with her
  • But only three weeks later, they made the mistake of welcoming their friend Paul into their home
  • Paul, who was staying downstairs, brought Jenny Hayes, a sex worker, over for a night of passion
  • Jenny Hayes and Paul got into an argument and Paul ran away
  • In a rage, Jenny Hayes, set the house on fire with the Abbey and her beautiful family asleep upstairs
  • Emily Forrest, 27, Flemington, Vic, shares her devastating story of a family ripped apart…

Lying in my hospital bed, I watched my sister Abbey hold my newborn, Arlo.

“He’s so cute that I forgive you for going into labour on my 16th birthday,” she joked.

“I was just getting you an extra special birthday gift,” I laughed.

“I can’t wait to be a mum someday, too,” she confessed.

“You’re a natural,” I told her, smiling.

Abbey and Arlo were like two peas in a pod as he got older.

She often came over to look after him when I returned to my job as a track rider – where I exercised the racehorses – and my partner Joel, 26, was also at work.

Growing up, Abbey and I rode our ponies on the backroads of Drysdale, Vic, together.

“When are you gonna ride the racehorses with me again?” I asked her one day.

“The last time you convinced me to go for a ride, I was thrown off,” she laughed.

Busy studying her VCE at high school, she kept her horse Mia in our parents’ paddock and planned to get back into it.

When Arlo was three, Abbey, 19, visited with exciting news. She and her partner of nine months, Inderpal, 28, nicknamed Indi, were expecting.

“I’m finally going to be a mum!” she cried to me.

“You’ll both be amazing parents,” I gushed.

Abbey and Indi rented a townhouse in Point Cook, Vic, to prepare for the arrival of their new bub.

They were moving in when Abbey went into labour on November 13, 2020.

That night they welcomed their beautiful daughter, Ivy into the world.

Peering into my niece’s hospital crib two days later, I couldn’t take my eyes off her tiny face and mop of dark hair.

“She’s exactly half you and half Indi,” I said to Abbey, smiling.

“Isn’t she perfect?” Abbey said, tearing up.

A week later, we all met for dinner at our parents’, Alan and Elizabeth’s place.

I loved watching Abbey with the baby she’d always wanted. Indi worshipped his new bub, too.

Me with baby Ivy and her my son Arlo, three.

Two weeks later, I was stuck at the mechanics with Arlo, having my tyres changed, when Dad called.

“You need to come to ours right now, Em,” he demanded. It wasn’t like him to sound so stern.

I asked the mechanics to rush my car through, and soon I was making the half hour drive with Arlo.

My gut was telling me something was very wrong.

At the house, my stomach sank when I saw a police car. Inside, two coppers were in the hall and I could hear Mum wailing.

One officer ushered Arlo away while the other took me into the living room.

“It’s your sister,” he said. “There’s been a fire.”

Dropping to the floor, I started screaming, unable to take in anything else.

When they left, I convinced myself they were wrong.

They didn’t actually say she was dead, I thought.

But watching the news with my parents that night in a haze, images of Abbey’s charred townhouse flooded the television screen.

“The remains of a man, woman and baby have been found in a Melbourne house,” the newsreader said.

It must be the wrong house, I thought.

After a sleepless night, Joel and I drove to Abbey’s home the next morning. My heart broke when I spotted her red car parked in the garage of the burnt home.

“They’re really gone,” I wailed, finally accepting it. It was even more horrifying to think little Ivy was just 19 days old.

We’d assumed it had been a tragic electrical fire, but the next day, police returned to my parents’ house to speak to us again.

“We’ve arrested a woman on suspicion of arson,” he said.

We were shell-shocked. Police gradually shared more information about what had happened on December 2, 2020 – the night of the fire.

Indi had a friend, Paul*, staying downstairs, who brought Jenny Hayes, 46, a sex-worker, over.

Paul and Jenny got into an argument, and Paul ran away, leaving Jenny at Abbey’s house.

Jenny messaged Paul, threatening to call police and accuse him of rape, then he blocked her number.

Enraged, Jenny sent another message.

I’m setting your house on fire right now, she said.

Our family misses Abbey every day.

After setting the mattress alight, Jenny left the house, taking pictures of the inferno from her car. Upstairs, Abbey, Indi and Ivy were asleep.

They were unable to escape the blaze and died of carbon monoxide poisoning. I hope they didn’t feel any pain.

Trying to parent my son through the tragedy and explain why his beloved aunt wouldn’t be here anymore was difficult.

“Aunty Abbey’s gone to heaven now,” I told Arlo as he sobbed.

Two years later, in 2022, Jenny Hayes, 48, pleaded guilty to three counts of arson causing death and was sentenced to 13 years in prison, with a minimum of eight years.

Knowing that Jenny could be free within six years, with time served, is terrifying after what she did. Her actions killed an entire beautiful family.

Life is quieter now without Abbey. Every Christmas our family sits at Abbey and Ivy’s grave and has lunch with them.

Mum and Dad spend time with Abbey’s horse Mia each day – she’s a little bit of Abbey for them.

Joel and I are no longer together but working with horses has been like therapy for me, too. It reminds me of my sister.

Abbey’s name is on a keyring on my saddle and her initials are embroidered on my helmet cover, so she’s always by my side.

Now, I’m teaching Arlo to ride and telling him stories of how Aunty Abbey and I trotted around town on our horses.

We only had 19 years with Abbey, and 19 days with Ivy, but we plan on keeping their memory alive forever.

It’s a love story! Take a look back on Jett Kenny’s relationship timeline

The fan-favourite star is competing on The Amazing Race with his girlfriend Lily Brown.
Loading the player...

Jett Kenny is sure to make waves on the new season of The Amazing Race Australia.

He’s an Ironman champion, son of two legendary athletes, Lisa Curry and Grant Kenny, and it doesn’t hurt that he’s previously appeared in two competitive reality TV shows – Dancing With The Stars and SAS: Australia.

As he hits our screens once more, Jett’s rugged good looks and charm are sure to place him centre stage once again.

Having made headlines in the past for some of his romantic flings, fans have been left wondering one very important thing: who is Jett Kenny’s girlfriend?

Jett is currently in a relationship with influencer and businesswoman Lily Brown, and the couple are embarking on the race of a lifetime together on the celebrity edition of The Amazing Race Australia in 2024.

Lily is a social media expert, and first started her own YouTube channel in 2015. She has since amassed over 330,000 Instagram followers and launched her own pyjama business, Chille, in 2021. The 26-year-old also hosts her own podcast, Red Hot The Pod.

The couple have been together since 2022 and it’s believed they first crossed paths when Jett modelled for Lily’s brand!

Their relationship will be put to the test on The Amazing Race, but they’re planning to use their great communication skills to get to the end and win.

Jett was previously in a relationship with his Dancing With The Stars partner, Lily Cornish, who he met in early 2019.

Prior to that, Jett “hadn’t dated a lot since high school,” according to a close friend. Which made his relationship with Lily all the more special.

With obvious chemistry from the get-go, the pair were regularly questioned on the nature of their relationship – even by the show’s host Amanda Keller.

“We are very close,” Jett told TV WEEK at the time. “She has insight into my life that a lot of people wouldn’t know about. We’re there for one another.”

“We’ve got to know each other really well. Everyone thinks we’re dating, but we’ll just have to wait and see how things pan out.”

Jett and Lily had obvious chemistry on and off the screen. (Image: Instagram)

While he may have played it off at the time, the pair did eventually begin seeing each other in the real world – though they had to do long-distance while Lily worked as a dancer.

The lowkey couple became Instagram official in May, 2019, when Jett shared a photo of them enjoying a day out in Sydney Harbour before Lily departed for four months of work.

“Not sure if I’m going to last four months without annoying you daily,” he said in the caption of the loved-up snap.

Though long-distance is known to be tough, the pair made it work for a time – even enjoying a reunion in Europe in August – but eventually called the whirlwind romance quits.

Jett and Lily went public with their relationship with a loved-up Insta photo. (Image: Instagram)

Jett was later linked to the heiress Francesca Packer in October, 2020, when their flirty Instagram banter caught the eye of keen fans.

Francesca, niece of billionaire business mogul James Packer, was seen leaving a series of fire emojis under a shirtless photo of Jett on Instagram.

Reports surfaced claiming the duo were a hot new couple, though neither Jett nor Francesca ever confirmed.

Whether or not that’s proof of a romance, they’ll always have those fire emojis. Swoon!

Get the Cate Blanchett glow with the most flawless dewy foundations for mature skin

These hydrating formulas are hidden gems.

No matter how old you are, finding the perfect foundation that gives you just the right amount of coverage, glow and hydration is a game-changing moment for your beauty routine.

Naturally as we age texture, dryness, fine lines and pigmentation come out of the woodworks to take up residency on our skin.

However, instead of looking for heavy duty formulas that can look mask like and at times can accentuate the very things we are trying to hide, opting for a more nourishing foundation that enhances your skin is the way to nail your base as you age.

Not to mention that a good glow never goes out of style. Who doesn’t want to look truly radiant?

Tips for finding the perfect foundation for mature skin

  • Look for light to medium coverage to avoid the mask like foundation look. Thicker formulas tend to settle into fine lines and look dry on mature skin.

  • Illuminating foundations with reflective qualities help to breathe new life into skin that has lost that certain quality which naturally happens as we age.

  • Hydrating foundations that melt into skin will help to reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles.

  • Go light. Apply your foundation in light layers and build up coverage where necessary to avoid heavy looking, textured skin.

  • Avoid powder and instead set with a fixing spray for better longevity. Powder will only accentuate lines and make skin look dry and thirsty.

  • If you can, look for foundations with skin-loving ingredients like hyaluronic acid and antioxidants to nourish your skin throughout the day.

Want to find your new favourite dewy foundation? Read on to find our top picks.

Guy Sebastian’s The Voice demands: ” I want Jess Back!”

The ultimatum no one saw coming.
Loading the player...

The drama behind the scenes of The Voice Australia has hit a crescendo, with whispers from the recent TV WEEK Logie Awards, suggesting that fan-favourite coach Guy Sebastian is less than thrilled about recent changes to the coaching panel – in particular, new coach Kate Miller-Heidke.

According to a well-placed insider, the tension boiled over at the prestigious awards night last month, where Guy, 42, made his feelings about the show’s current state crystal clear.

“Guy Sebastian getting asked to sit with Kate Miller-Heidke was like putting Vegemite on a banana,” the source revealed, adding that the pair looked awkward and didn’t walk the red carpet together.

The insider went on to explain that Guy has made it clear he wants fellow coach Jessica Mauboy, 35, back in the red chair next to him – or he may not return to the show next year.

The pair have a great relationship. (Image: Instagram).

SECRET DEMANDS

According to the showbiz spy, Guy was overheard sharing his thoughts with Jessica at the Logies, where the pair were spotted deep in conversation.

It seems the chemistry between the coaches is paramount to Guy, and his fondness for fellow singer Jessica is no secret. The two have a longstanding friendship, and their onscreen camaraderie has been a hit with fans.

The same can’t be said for his dynamic with Kate, which, according to insiders, has been strained at best. Kate, 42, has come under fire this season for being “overly competitive” with her fellow coaches.

“It does feel like she was planted to ruffle some feathers.” (Image: Supplied)

An insider told Yahoo Lifestyle that Kate was nervous about her edit and “it does feel like she was planted to ruffle some feathers”.

Whether or not it’s just for entertainment is anyone’s guess, but a show spy suggests Kate’s combative style with fellow coaches Guy, LeAnn Rimes and Adam Lambert hasn’t proved popular with the panel.

Adding even more weight to Guy’s demands, it’s worth noting that when he joined the show back in 2019, he signed a lucrative contract reportedly worth $750,000 per season. However, that figure is believed to have since swelled to a cool $1 million – a clear indication of just how valuable he is to the show and its producers.

With The Voice Australia’s future hanging in the balance, all eyes are on the producers to see if they’ll bow to Guy’s request to get Jess back!

Xavier Molyneux teases upcoming “raunchy” storyline in Neighbours

“There was a lot of effort put in behind it."

Neighbours star Xavier Molyneux has teased a raunchy storyline is on the horizon for his character, Byron Stone.

The Australian actor and musician walked into Erinsborough in 2023, when Neighbours was revived, as the son of beloved town member Jane Harris, played by Annie Jones.

The 26-year-old confessed in an interview with The Daily Telegraph that fans should expect a “raunchy” storyline down the track for Byron.

“There’s a bit of a raunchy storyline. I’m excited to see that one going to air,” he told The Daily Telegraph. “There was a lot of effort put in behind it. They brought in people who specialise in that type of performance.”

However, Xavier remained tight lipped as to who his character would be getting intimate with.

Upon the Aussie soap’s return last year, Byron was declared to become a regular character after making only a brief appearance in the final weeks of the 2022 season.

While fans were thrilled by the announcement, they were surprised to discover that Byron was recast, with the original actor, Joe Klocek not returning. At the time, executive producer Jason Herbison explained to Digital Spy that some people were “unavailable” due to other projects.

“I cried when I got the part. Just because, obviously, it was huge when I was growing up. I loved the show,” Xavier told the publication.

The shake-up has worked in Xavier’s favour as the young up and comer landed his first movie role in Take My Hand which premiered in August 2024. Prior to acting, he appeared on the popular reality series, Big Brother Australia in 2020.

“There’s a lot of impostor syndrome going on. Being an actor was always a pipe dream,” he told the publication.

It is almost shocking to hear that five years ago, Xavier was working as a paramedic and was even spotted off-stage on Australia’s Got Talent in 2019 in the emergency a performance went wrong.

All the details on the 2024 season of The Voice Australia

Are you ready?
Loading the player...

A brand-new collection of hopeful singers have taken the stage on The Voice 2024 in the hopes of becoming Australia’s next sensation.

But these singers aren’t the only newcomers hitting the reality TV competition, with three new coaches also sitting in the infamous red chairs alongside returning judge Guy Sebastian.

All four judges have extraordinary talent and earned their name in the music industry, now they will discover and nurture aspiring talent.

Below, we’ve listed everything you need to know about The Voice Australia 2024, including the release date, contestants and details on the judges.

Who are the coaches for The Voice Australia 2024?

Australian pop sensation Guy Sebastian is the only original Voice coach returning to the red chair this 2024 season – reprising his coaching position for the fifth season.

In May, Channel Seven confirmed he will be joined by American Idol 2009 runner-up Adam Lambert, LeAnn Rimes and Kate Miller-Heidke.

It will definitely be a tight competition this year as the judges are ready for a fight to win the top spot.

Speaking to TV Week at the 2024 Logies, Kate Miller-Heidke spoke about what fans can expect this year.

“This season of The Voice, I think, is going to be by far the best ever. And I’m not just saying that because it’s my first season,” she said. “I think we’ve got such a real diversity of talent – all styles of different singing. It’s a celebration of music and human connection.”

“Guy Sebastian really took me under his wing,” she added. “And I could go crawling to him if I ever had a slight crisis of confidence or needed advice or help because he’s been around the block so many times. And he was very, very generous with his knowledge.”

The winner’s prize

The Voice Australia winner will take home $100,000 in prize money. However, the show has quietly dropped the recording contract offer with Universal Music Australia or EMI Music Australia that it had in years past.

Instead, the winner is set to get an artist development package with a recording studio in Sydney.

Many are calling this new rule a blessing and an end to the “curse”, which saw previous winners fail to ever have their music careers take off. It seems the contract is something that has “blocked winners from making a profit or owning their music for years,” an insider told Yahoo!Lifestyle.

When does The Voice Australia return?

Luckily for fans, the wait is over! The Network confirmed the singing contest would return to screens on Monday August 19 2024.

The Voice airs on Channel Seven and 7Plus.

Who are the contestants?

Check out our 2024 contestants article to see the full list of contestants and their teams.

A second couple is rumoured to quit The Block in 2024

Peaceful Phillip Island is thrown into chaos.

Since the very beginning of the 2024 season, rumours have swirled that one couple quit The Block just weeks into filming.

Now, Block insiders have claimed that a second shock exit could be set to cause a major shake up.

The 2024 season of The Block may have only been airing for a few weeks, but since the very start it was rumoured that blue team Jesse Maguire and Paige Beechey would be departing the show early.

Ahead of their exit, Executive Producer Julian Cress claimed the pair left for a “strong reason” and in a “very dramatic” way.

The reason for Jesse and Paige’s early exit was confirmed to be as a result of the toll that the pressure of the competition had on Paige’s mental health. The engaged couple recently spoke to PEDESTRIAN.TV to debunk theories that they left the show to save their relationship.

The “relationship theory is not even close to the truth,” Paige said.

“We understand that [the producers’] narrative, shaped by their edits, might suggest otherwise – however the true reason won’t start to unfold until around week three, and even then, it won’t be played out on camera for the audience in true form.”

It’s safe to say the Western Australian natives had a tumultuous journey on The Block, and they were heard multiple times saying they were ready to pack up and leave.

They have been replaced by the pink team, Maddy and Charlotte, who are sisters from Sydney.

According to Daily Mail Australia, another couple may also quit the show before the season ends: green team Kylie and Brad.

“Kylie had an absolute meltdown at the end of week 12 and stormed off the set,” a production insider told Daily Mail.

“She flat-out refused to continue filming, and the pair didn’t even show up to finish their communal space in week 13.

“I’ve got no clue how the producers are going to handle this on screen or how they’ll edit around it,” they continued.

Their exit wouldn’t be the first in Block history, but it would be the first time a team leaves so far into the competition.
