Jennifer O’Dowd thought winning the lottery was impossible, until she bought a ticket to support a worthy charity – and went from living in temporary housing with most of her belongings in her car to owning a beautiful million-dollar mansion.
“I never believed for a minute I would actually win,” admits Jennifer, 47, who now lives in her “dream home” on Queensland’s idyllic Tambourine Mountain, after her luck changed when she bought a ticket in 2017 to win a prize home in the yourtown raffle, which funds vulnerable children through organisations such as the Kids Helpline.
“I could only afford to buy one ticket and just thought I would do what I could to help in my own small way.”
Originally from Melbourne, Jennifer had moved to Queensland several years earlier to escape a crippling illness she likens to arthritis and built her dream home, only to sell it at a loss when an “ugly concrete monstrosity” was erected next door.

She became lost and lonely, staying in short-term accommodation when she received a phone call she never expected.
“I got the call on a Friday and actually moved in on Sunday,” she says of learning the fully furnished home was suddenly hers – mortgage free. “I would say to anyone who thinks they don’t have a chance to win big, that they certainly can and I am living proof.”
