After being asked to appear on reality show Too Ugly For Love? 23-year-old British woman Lexxie Harford decided to share photos of herself on uploading site Imgur to help lesson stigma faced by those with noticeable birthmarks.
Lexxie’s photos have been viewed over 100, 000 times in the last fortnight, and have sparked an interesting online discussion about birthmarks in particular and discrimination in general.
Talking to ABC News, Lexxie said that she wasn’t offended by the TV show’s offer, but that she also had no interest in participating.
“I had to say to [the booking agent], ‘Look, I don’t really have a place on the show you’re scouting for.’ If [other people with birthmarks] accepted themselves, they really wouldn’t go on a show like that. I would try and get that person to see themselves differently.”
Lexxie also explained that she didn’t realise she was “different” until she was nine years old. “Up until that day I never noticed it – it was probably because of the ignorance of a child.” She has used makeup to cover up the birthmark in the past, but she stopped hiding it after college, and instead decided to embrace her natural appearance.
“I’m absolutely not self-conscious about it at all,” Lexxie said. “I actually like it a lot.”
