Troye Sivan Mellet, known simply as Troye Sivan, is a 23-year-old South African-born Australian YouTube personality and one of the world’s biggest popstars.
Troye grew up in a tight-knit Jewish community in Perth and attended an Orthodox school until he was almost 15. Growing up, he caught the showbiz bug singing in his synagogue and, while touring other synagogues, built himself a name as a singer in the business.
^^ You may remember him as the 11-year-old who performed with Guy Sebastian back in 2006 – an act which he credits to launching his career.
Troye started his YouTube channel in 2012 and very quickly earned millions of followers. Then, when he was 17 years old, he made the courageous decision to come out in a video online to all of those followers.
Troye talks about his decision and how it changed his life on Tuesday at 9 pm on Andrew Denton’s “interview” series.
The now 23-year-old, who has just released a hit with Arina Grande, explains it was something he had to do.
“I could not stay in the closet any longer,” he explains during the segment.
“I felt like it was all I thought about, it was suffocating, and I had a feeling that I could do a lot of good by sharing my story. And so at a certain point I was like, yeah, this is really, really terrifying, but what other choice do I have.”
