In a heartbreaking turn of events a Brazilian footballer has been killed in a Colombian jet crash just one week after he found out he was going to be a father.
A chartered plane carrying one of Brazil’s top football teams Chapecoense has crashed into mountains in Columbia killing 76 people on Monday.
The aircraft reportedly went down near the town of La Ceja, in a remote area of Colombia, after taking off from Bolivian airport amid reports of on board ‘electrical problems’.
Among the dead was Chapecoense forward Tiago da Rocha Vieira, also known as Tiaguinho, who found out about his wife’s pregnancy just one week before the crash.
Days ago the 22-year-old was filmed by his teammates opening a message and gift sent from his wife, Graziele.
Tiaguinho was seen reading the note which told him he was going to become a father and you can see the expectant dad jump and cry out in celebration at the joyous news.
“His wife’s pregnancy is a small miracle. It is a small part of Tiaguinho that stays behind with us. We are thankful,” Gilmara Marins, his cousin, told CNN. His wife Graziele is just over a month pregnant. “He always wanted to be a young father … so I am happy that he got to have that last joy,” Gilmara added.
“His mother still cannot believe what happened. She is still waiting for him to be alive,” Gilmara continued said. “But his death has been confirmed, so we are just awaiting the arrival of the body. That is all we can do now. Wait for him to come home.”
Fellow player, goalkeeper Marcos Danilo Padilha managed to survive the Flight LMI2933 wreckage but later died in hospital due to his injuries following a heartbreaking final call to his wife, reports The Sun.
Bad weather conditions cruelly hindered the rescue operation but there are reportedly six survivors from the crash including three players, a journalist and two of the crew members.
The most deadly plane crash to happen this year occurred just as the team were due to play Copa Sudamericana tournament final on Wednesday in a bid to cap off their fairy tale season.
