Rugby League’s most famous groupie: I’ve been tamed

She’s been painted as the most notorious woman on the rugby league scene, but Jo Knowsley discovers a very different — and very engaged — Charmyne Palavi .

Brisbane mother-of-three and tanning salon operator Charmyne Palavi, 38, is set to put her NRL notoriety behind her after becoming engaged to 22-year-old Michael Browne — a winsome rugby union player 16 years her junior.

To Michael, Charmyne is the epitome of beauty — he adores her. And he insists he’ll still think that way when she’s 50 and he’s 34.

“This is the first time I’ve really been in love, and I know it’s the real thing,” he says. “I don’t see what the fuss is about. I’ve had no negative feedback. My mates think it’s great. I’ve pulled one of the most well known women in Australia.”

The couple met in March this year at Brisbane’s Normanby Hotel, where Michael saw her across the room and asked a mate, “Who’s that girl?”

“She was wearing a little black dress and I thought she was hot as hell,” he tells The Lowdown.

“When I got home to my aunty’s I showed some photos on my phone and said, ‘That’s the girl I think I’m going to marry.’ Then I started texting her and we met up at her place later in the week.”

Former West Subiaco player Michael, who is just eight years older than Charmyne’s eldest daughter Jessica, admits he has had “only a couple of girlfriends”. But he said he’s not bothered about Charmyne’s past — and the fact she has become somewhat notorious after appearing on an episode of the ABC’s Four Corners, in which she frankly discussed her experiences on the football dating scene.

“I told him pretty much everything,” says Charmyne, who admits to enhancing her breasts by two cup sizes to a voluptuous D. “But the real truth, not like it appears in the papers.
