A hateful Trump supporter has been caught on film abusing an Arab-American Uber driver in busy New York traffic.
St. John’s University adjunct professor Chris Cody was a passenger in an Uber car being driven by a man named Mohammed who’d told him shortly before he’d been picked up that he’d been racially abused by a guy driving a white SUV in Queens.
Cody, who speaks Arabic, found out that the Uber driver had taken a video of the verbal attack on his phone and convinced the reluctant driver to send him the footage so he could share it on social media, reports the Washington Post.
Cody, who’s also a doctoral student studying modern world history at St. Johns University, believed the incident was unprovoked.
“I could tell he was upset,” Cody said. “He didn’t tell me exactly why he decided to take a video. I think he was just so shocked by what happened.”
The irate motorist in the video can be heard saying:
“You f–kin’ Arab mothaf–ker, terrorist f–king c–ksucka. I don’t care, bro, video. You’re a loser. You don’t even—from here, you mothaf–ka. F–king loser. F–k you and your family, you terrorist mother–ker. Video all you want. You’re a loser. You’re an Arab. You’re a f–king loser. Sand n-gger. Exactly, video. What is that gonna do? What is that gonna do? Trump is president, a–hole, so you can kiss your f–kin’ visa goodbye, scumbag. We’ll deport you soon, don’t worry, you f–kin’ terrorist. Oh my God, I’m so scared. What’d ya, steal it? You f–kin’ Arab f–k.”
Cody says that the driver has been living in New York City since migrating from Morocco about six years ago.
The video – which Cody gave to Youtube star Karim Metwaly to upload – has gone viral with more than 5.6 million views since it was uploaded on Friday.
New York State Sen. Michael Gianaris – the Democratic representative for the area where the abuse reportedly took place – has condemned the attack.
“In this community, we pride ourselves on our diversity and tolerance,” Gianaris wrote on Facebook on Friday. “Hateful rhetoric should not be tolerated in a neighborhood where all races and different beliefs are welcome … More than ever, now is the time to unite and organize. We will stand together against cowardly attacks and show that our values and vision for our country will triumph over hate.”
Since his controversial election Donald Trump has said that he is committed to being the “president of all Americans.” During a recent 60 Minutes interview the president-elect told those who are committing acts of hate in his honour to “stop it.”
Last week, New York’s Governor Andrew Cuomo created a hotline for people to report bias-based harassment and intimidation.
Cuomo has previously said that his state will be a refuge for those Americans who feel they’re under attack post-election.
“Whether you are gay or straight, Muslim or Christian, rich or poor, black or white or brown, we respect all people in the state of New York,” Cuomo wrote on Facebook November 13. “It’s the very core of what we believe and who we are. … We don’t allow a federal government that attacks immigrants to do so in our state.”
