The tides are changing for pro-surfer and shark-attack survivor Bethany Hamilton, who has announced she is pregnant!
The pro-surfer announced her pregnancy via video posted to YouTube and Facebook.
“We have a little surprise for you … baby on board!” she says in the sweet clip.
“She’s pregnant, yes!” her husband Dirks responds.
Bethany gained recognition when her story was turned into a movie [Soul Sourfer] in 2011 starring Dennis Quaid and country singer Carrie Underwood.
In 2003, Bethany survived a shark attack and lost her left arm. She did not let the incident impact her dreams of surfing, and she began competing professionally four years later in 2007.
In 2010, she was the twentieth ranked woman among surfers.
The inspirational 25-year-old is aware she is venturing into unchartered waters: becoming a parent.
So will raising a child with one arm be difficult?
“I’ll figure it out and be creative,” said Bethany.
“Motherhood with one arm, I kind of think about it,” she continued.
“I kind of forget that I have one arm, a squirming baby and changing diapers and just me could be really challenging but I think how I live life now I just adjust and adapt to different things and I’ll find my own ways to take care of the baby.”
Bethany revealed she is 22-weeks pregnant and is expecting a baby boy!
She might be half-way through her pregnancy but that isn’t stopping the resilient surfer from stopping what she loves doing!
“I’ve been surfing throughout my whole pregnancy,” she says.
“I plan to surf as long as I can. Once the belly’s pretty big maybe just mellow it out, and spend more time swimming and just enjoying the ocean and doing other activities.”
We imagine her baby boy, who is due in June this year will just surf straight out!
A huge congratulations to the couple!
