Jesse and Melisa Meek of Happy Valley, Oregon, decided that a posting simple announcement on social media wasn’t enough for their first child, and instead put their own spin to the famous intro rap from hit TV show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, in an adorable video that has since gone viral around the globe.
A glimpse at the lyrics show that the couple had fun twisting the original rhymes from the catchy ’90s rap into their own unique tune:
“In Happy Valley, Oregon, living and wed, bought our first house and started to build our homestead…”
“I woke up in the morning about 7 or 8, and I thought to myself, ‘Oh man, I’m late!’ Looked at my test stick, it was finally there: a little plus sign. We’re now three, not a pair,” they belted out.
Since being posted on YouTube, the one minute video has been viewed over 2.6 million times.
“It was completely unexpected. That was the last thing we thought would happen, that it would blow up to what it has,” the expectant mother told their local news network WICU.
The Meeks said it took them five takes to get the video just right and it was simply shot on a camera phone.
With their friends and family scattered far and wide, they thought by turning to the internet they could get the message out to their loved ones in one single hit.
“We said let’s do a song, or a rap, think of something to do,” Melissa explained.
“And I just started playing around with some words and the Fresh Prince tune kept coming to mind and then Jesse said he was doing the same thing and the same tune was coming to his mind.”
So, now the fun-loving pair have become an online sensation, will there be a follow-up video from these internet celebs? The Meeks say they would consider doing another video once they find out the baby’s gender.
