Just two weeks after more than 8,000 people were killed in a devastating earthquake in Nepal, a second major quake with a magnitude of 7.3 on the Richter scale has hit the east of the nation, near Mount Everest.
Hundreds were sent fleeing to the streets in the nationโs capital of Kathmandu as the quake struck at 12:35 Nepali time. Tremors were felt in neighbouring nations Tibet, Bangladesh, as far away as the Indian capital of New Delhi, although the epicentre of the quake lay in a rural area close to the Chinese border and approximately 76-kilometers from the Nepalese capital of Tibet.
Police spokesman Kamal Singh Bam told CNN that at least 50 people have died in Nepal, while Nepalese government spokesman Minendra Rijal earlier said that another 1,261 people have been injured.
Indiaโs Home Ministry spokesman told CNN that at least 17 people had been killed in India, with 16 people had been killed in the state of Bihar, and one more in Uttar Pradesh. Officials in China said one person was confirmed dead in Tibet.
The second quake has resulted in further landslides, collapsed buildings, injuries and damage just as the community were beginning to pick through the rubble and put their lives back together after the first mammoth quake on 25th April.
A myriad of organisations have opened appeals to help communities devastated by the quake. You can contribute via:
