“I didn’t know how I would survive without her. But almost five months later, I understand why I am still here. My babies are four beautiful blessings,” Carlos admitted to People.
“They are becoming little humans. I just wish Erica could see them grow up,” Carlos smiled.
Carlos is taking each day as they come, telling the magazine, “This wasn’t the plan. Erica was supposed to be here. I still come home after work and look at pictures of us together. I go to her Facebook and I look through our text messages.”
“But I know I’ll be okay. I have to be. I have four beautiful children to raise.”
Since losing his wife, Carlos has been overwhelmed by the incredible support he has received from the community.
The new-dad set up a GoFundMe page, where nearly 13,000 people have chipped in donating $469,726 (approx. $606, 031.68 AU).
His bittersweet story captured the attention of American comedian, Steve Harvey.
He was so moved that Steve surprised Carlos by donating numerous gifts as well as generously setting up a college fund for each child, kicking it off with $10,000 each.
“When Steve Harvey told me that, I couldn’t believe it,” Carlos gushed.
“Everything I do is for my children and their future. Education is so important. I worry about money and this just made me feel so relieved.”
The now-father-of-four’s story moved people across the globe.
Tragically a few hours after giving birth to three girls and one boy, Erica went into hypovolemic shock, an emergency condition when the patient has a severe amount of blood loss.
“I still think back to that moment every day and it was wonderful. Erica did so well, the babies were healthy. It was perfect,” the 29-year-old father recalls.
The new-mum died on January 16 at 1:50am. “I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t speak,” Carlos remembers.
Tracy, Paisley, Erica and Carlos, Jr. are now at home with their dad and thriving.
Speaking to Steve, Carlos revealed how his wife lives on in his kids.
“I feel thankful and blessed because each one of them has something in common with my wife, Erica.”
