A doll included in a Playmobil pirate ship has outraged not just one mother, but the internet.
Ida Lockett told The Washington Post her five-year-old boy was gifted the pirate ship containing what appears to be an African-American slave with a neck shackle for added value.
“What toy will they come up with next!” said Ida in a Facebook post along with photos of her baby boy with the toys.
“It’s definitely racist,” Lockett told CBS Sacremento.
“It told my son to put a slave cuff around the black character’s neck, and then to play with the toy.
“You cannot have this specific accessory and call it anything else. The fact that you can Google it, look it up, say what it is — it’s a slave collar.”
Playmobil has defended the toy, providing a statement to The Washington Post explaining it is meant to reflect a pirate ship from the century.
“If you look at the box, you can see that the pirate figure is clearly a crew member on the pirate ship and not a captive,” said Playmobil in the statement.
“The figure was meant to represent a pirate who was a former slave in a historical context. It was not our intention to offend anyone in anyway.”
