When David Sowers and Laura Gillice’s dog ran away after the couple were involved in a car wreck near Yellowstone, Wyoming the couple refused to give up looking for her even though the odds were stacked against them.
Jade, a 17-month old Australian cattle dog, was spooked when officials tried to retrieve her after the accident on July 23 but the already skittish pup escaped into the wilderness.
David, Laura and their children searched for Jade – even while recovering from their own injuries – but their efforts proved fruitless but they were determined and created a Facebook page, Bring Jade Home, to publicise the lost pup and they were buoyed by reports of sightings of her.
Park rangers and volunteers even joined in the efforts, coordinating searches and setting traps to try and lure Jade back to safety.
David told [PEOPLE]9http://www.people.com/article/missing-dog-jade-found-yellowstone-national-park|target=”_blank”) that he was always hopeful his beloved pet would return.
“I’ve got to find her, she’s my dog,” he recalled thinking. “No one else is going to put in the effort that I will.”
On Friday the family’s dedication paid off and whilst Gillice, 58, was out walking another dog, Laila near a gas station where the accident happened she spotted a familiar face.
While Jade was just “skin and bones” and nursing a cut on her mouth the otherwise healthy and happy pup found her way to her owner 42 days after she went missing.
“She’s one tough little girl,” Gillice said.
The family took to Facebook to thank everyone who helped in the search for their dog and say they have been inundated with all kinds of emails and messages and texts in the past few days commending their resolve to find their dog.
According to the Facebook page there’s been some whispers of turning the whole saga into a silver screen adaptation.
“It’s a little overwhelming,” Gillice says. “We laugh: ‘Who’s going to play us in the movie?'”
