The Lins made the decision to pull over on a busy Melbourne road when they realised that their baby girl didn’t have the patience to wait around for a traffic jam.

With the assistance of passer-by Andrew Bowen, the new parents began delivering their child into the world on the side of the street.

Police officer Paul Henry was nearby when a cyclist informed him that a woman was being attacked in her car.

Senior Sergeant Henry approached the car, where a woman’s screams were audible.

“I got over there thinking Andrew was the offender not the hero,“ the policeman explained of the confusing moment.

Mrs Lin’s feet on the dashboard indicated that this wasn’t a woman who was being attacked, rather a lady in labour!

“Andrew tried to leave when I got there but I told him you’re not going anywhere,” Paul said, before adding: “I said ‘I’m as good at this as you mate, get back in there.”

The strangers banded together to help Fiona safely deliver baby Matilda at 10 days early. The bub weighed in at 3.58kg.

Despite the far from glamorous arrival, mum and bub are doing well.
