Melbourne: Car thief drives off with baby AND person on bonnet

See dramatic CCTV footage of a woman clinging to the bonnet of her friend’s car as a thief stole it – and a six-month-old baby - from outside a Melbourne school.

CCTV has caught dramatic footage of a woman throwing herself onto the bonnet of a Mercedes car in a bid to stop a thief taking the car which had her friend’s six-month-old baby in it.

The carjacking happened outside a Coburg school in Melbourne’s north during school pick-up. According to reports the baby’s mum and a friend were standing outside the car waiting for kids to come out of school at 3pm when two males approached.

Here’s how the police reported the incident:

*“One of the men, described as about 30-years-old, got into the vehicle and drove off.

The other male fled the scene south down Ross Street in a silver Toyota Camry sedan with a rear spoiler.

The friend of the mother, a woman, jumped on the bonnet of the Mercedes in an attempt to alert the male offender to the baby inside the car.

However he ignored her and continued to drive with her on the bonnet for about 400 metres, before she fell off.

Incredibly, the woman was unharmed.”*

The man dumped the car in Haig Avenue, Brunswick, about 45 minutes later and told a passerby about the girl in the back seat.

Police report that “the baby was “not even phased by the whole thing” but the mum was “hysterical”.

The car keys were inside the car when the male jumped in and he instantly locked the doors. He drove over the mother’s foot as he sped from the kerb.

Police are yet to locate the offenders.

The man who stole the car is perceived to be of European appearance with dark wavy hair and was wearing a light coloured t-shirt and dark pants.

The other male is believed to be in his late 20’s with dark hair tied up in a bun and was wearing a green t-shirt and dark pants.
