When YouTube star Coby Persin staged a fake wedding shoot in Times Square with a 65-year-old-man parading around a 12-year-old bride some onlookers stood idly by while others were outraged and voiced their disgust.
The “newlyweds” were part of a social experiment that was aimed at highlighting the issues around child marriage – which according to the video is still legal in some US states for kids as young as 12.
The video ends with an appalling figure about child marriage – how 33,000 girls are married as children every day and stripped of their childhood.
Persin’s experiment echoes that of charity KAFA. Last year, they staged a similar video in Lebanon to highlight the issue, which also saw spectator’s express their horror.
