Baby koala hugs mum as she has surgery

Phantom the baby koala can’t bear to be away from him mum, even when she’s being operated on.

These are the adorable images of six-month-old joey nestling up to his mum Lizzy whilst she was receiving treatment for injuries she sustained from a car accident on the Warrego Highway at Coominya, just west of Brisbane.

Lizzy was carrying Phantom on her back when she was struck by a car and while her bub – who only weighs 420 grams – was left miraculously unscathed the mother suffered a collapsed lung.

The pair was taken to the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital where Lizzy’s lungs were drained of fluid and during the procedure baby Phantom stayed by his mum’s side, caressing her fur and offering her comfort.

“Lizzy is in recovery and we’re happy to say she is going well,” said hospital vet nurse Jamie-Lynn Nevers told the Courier Mail.

“It’s so rewarding to see patients like Lizzy doing well.”

The wildlife hospital on the Sunshine Coast in a 24/7 facility and has treated 58,000 native animals in its 11-year history.
